Dan Duryea really was fantastic in this kind of roles: the oily cheater, that can turn into an instant in a friendly guy, buying everyone a cup of coffee, but who is constantly sceming and sacrifizing without remorse people around him. The perfect parasite. His voice too is a perfect instrument for these impersonations, and he clearly was enjoying the vilain-roles he was portraying. I haven't checked wether he ever got an Oscar or something like that, but he definetely deserved one. For once he isn't opposed to an equally greedy woman, but once again, he's outsmarting himself :)

I love Dan Duryea, probably one of the most underrated stars ever he plays the villian so perfectly. One of my favorites! Funny thing was he was completely opposite of the image he portrayed in movies. He was a loving family man, went to PTA meetings, served the community, and enjoyed spending his days in his garden.

Nearing my eighth decade, I'm enjoying the film noir, dramas, and slightly above "B" westerns that i ewww-ed over as a small boy in the early 1950s. I particularly enjoy the ones with the character actors I liked back then. Dan Duryea was one of them. He never played a sympathetic role that I can remember. The professional "bad guys" made the heroes look brave and kissable. Thks guys!

Nothing, nothing!, is more soothing and enjoyable than watching a Noir in bed, at night, tucked and comfy under the blankets - and particularly during a rainy night!
... Quite possibly, Noir is the most intimate of genres - particularly with their often-expressed angst of Human frailties and flaws in all of us.
TRIVIA: Did you know that the classic noir ended in the late 50s, NOT because of changing tastes, but because on TV, with the relatively primitive technology back then, their replays blurred white and dark contrasts, and noir craftsmen relied on subtle white and dark light contrasts to express moods - moods that came out fine in theatres, but not on TV. .. So, TV companies demanded the end of such practice, and to film only with sterile stark contrasts.

Love these film noir, such drama you just don't find done the same way nowadays🙄. Dan Duryea was superb as a psychopathic criminal, no holding back he was a true narcissist, out to get anyone who stood in his way, no thoughts of anyone but himself. Movie making has come an extremely long way in terms of creating drama, fear, etc. But there is nothing to compare to the earlier filmography. Truly classics in their own right and the pre-code Hollywood films are a film lovers delight! Thanks for posting this.👏👏👍

Later, Redman's secretary, Merl Kramer (Dorothy Lamour), relates the odd dream to neighbor Karl Benson (Dan Duryea), a slimy private investigator. Then the wealthy woman is robbed and murdered, and, since her husband has an airtight alibi, suspicion falls on the shocked Merl, who realizes she's being set up by either Benson, Redman or both men together.”

A very good movie. I was impressed with Dorothy Lamour's acting in the dramatic scene with Dan Duryea at the end of the movie. She could've done a lot more than the roles given to her. And of course Dan Duryea is wonderfully menacing. Also, I like the touch of humor in the movie. I don't understand why other viewers don't like it. For me, it relieves the dramatic tension. And I know these movies really don't have the drama that today's audience can experience, but I grew up on these movies so I really do know how to get into them and appreciate them. That's just me.

Love Dan. Can't get enough of him. He plays the charming snake like no other. This is the 4th movie I seen him do this character. I did see one where he was a decent guy. It didn't work for me. Yet it was so nice to know that in real life he was a down to earth wonderful loyal family man and not a phony, snobby Hollywood big shot. A hell of a lot of big celebrities could learn so much from a first class act like he was. And he steals every movie without purposely upstaging the big shots he co-stars with. What more could one ask for.

I totally agree with you 100%.
And another thing that is not known about him, is that he was a Master Concert Pianist.
And I saw him actually play the
Piano as good as Liberace, in another movie, but at the moment I can't remember what the name of the movie was, but it was another Noir movie, where he teamed up with a blonde woman that sang beautifully, and she went upstairs to open a safe, while he was down stairs playing at the Piano, but if the owner of the club showed up, he was going to switch to playing
"Moonlight Sonata", but she ended up getting caught by the owner of the club.
I think he was supposed to be an alcoholic and trying to reform. Her husband was arrested for murdering someone, but he didn't do the murder, Dan Duryea did it, and her husband got blamed.
I've been looking for that movie again but I don't remember the name. It was a treat movie, and Dean Duryea did any excellent job in it.
I Love him in "The Little Foxes" he killed me, he was so funny, and I've liked him ever since.

This is what film noir is all about: Nobody's perfect, the good guy/bad guy concept is completely relative; that's what I like about the genre. And my personal favorite, Richard Widmark, ever since watching the movie The Last Wagon. I’ve watched that movie 5 or 6 times. Every once in a while, I have to have my The Last Wagon fix. On the subject of movies, Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck is the best and saddest movie that I’ve ever seen. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

The Amazing Duryea! If you haven't read his bio, he was a good family man and all-around nice guy. His parents frowned on acting, so he went into Insurance for 6 years, had a Heart attack in his 20s and got away from the stress to go into acting. Lucky for us. :) The moral of the story is: women who wear too much jewelry get more attention than they bargained for.
