Adding text on a video. Chosing the right colors, fonts, and framing so that the message you are trying to convey is readily picked up by the eye. Timing stills, transistions and animations so that it is easily understood by an audience and produces minimal visual noise. Having your image and video contents be hi-def, relevant, appealing in terms of colour and contrast, and not too distracting from the rest of your presentation...
There's a lot more to his visuals than just text on a video, imho.

Yeah I've noticed recently that he's moving away from default Final Cut Pro X graphics (bad TV, light noise) and into more involving motion graphics. I wonder if he's outsourcing the motion graphics these days? Would be very smart, motion graphics, especially AE, can be super time consuming and delegating that responsibility to a 3rd party would free up time for research/writing.
HolidayKirk Atleast for me there is a pride that goes into editing. which is why I have never been a fan of outsourcing it. It would free up alot of time though, but it would also cost money.

I doubt he's outsourcing it. The techniques he's using are actually very simple so he could've picked them up rather quickly. He just happened to already have a great eye for graphic design layout, color use, and timing, so he uses these fundamental techniques very effectively. Perhaps he always had this skill though and only just started taking the time to fully apply it.

Trump does not use his words to form thoughts or argue points. He uses words to sculpt emotions for his listeners to sit in and populate with meaning.

jacropolis I disagree on feeling like he is talking after dinner. He did do this on his conferences before winning the election, where he aimed to make you feel like you were having a drink with him and chatting about politics. However now it feels more like him tagging stuff online, which it is alright I guess, if it didn't feel so... exaggerated? Like, I know lots of people do it, but everytime I see "So true!" and "What a shame!" online I feel like the writter is either being fake or tries to end the sentence stronger to affirm a point they have little strengh to back up.
I personally don't know which one I would prefer Trump is, but at least if he is faking there is less chance he was serious with his praising Putin

The president has no place in the abyss. He must be looking out for the people of his country and focusing his energies toward the issues they and the world face today. The normal rules of social media don't apply to you and they shouldn't. I feel a little dumber every time I read one of his (granted, very human, but very unintelligent) tweets.
I really appreciate and admire how dispassionate you tackle topics like this. That's the attitude we need in times like this. You're one of the few people who are trully able to talk about this topics, without excluding people by blaming them for what they think. And that is the only way we can get back together and talk about things. This is the way to open up the dialoge between devided camps. Thank you so much for what you do.

it's taken me several months and watching dozens of videos but i've finally found something i can correct nerdwriter on: his use of the term 'beg the question.'
To beg the question is a logical fallacy and his use of the term in this video is incorrect. Begging the question is where you presuppose contentious information into a question to try and frame someone or something. For example, at a murder trial, a (bad) lawyer might ask the main suspect during cross-examination, "so what did it feel like to kill the victim?" Here, the lawyer is planting the idea of the suspect being guilty by assuming that if he were to ask the more fundamental question "did you kill him?" the response would be "yes."
To beg the question is a term that is often misused, with most people understanding it to mean something along the lines of "needing the question to be asked."
Also if you ever read this, nerdwriter, your channel is my favourite thing on youtube.

I'm with you, Lord LunaEquie is me. You're a bit younger then me (at least judging by the last comment), but I also have never seriously participated in these things... I mean, I think I have a ~8 year old twitter account with 3 tweets on it (and following no one) and a FB-account with _no_ content, used a few years ago to read some "login-locked" content.
I also found Akrahm's comment hilarious.
cy-one I frequently comment on youtube videos that I like (and have actually had a few conversations with some creators), and I am part of a relatively small forum but am rather close friends with about a dozen people there, but I don't have any other social media presence. I actively avoid Facebook (for a long list of reasons all relating to how bad Facebook is); Twitter's size limits is a non-starter for me because I am a pedantic prick (as evidenced by the length of this very post); Tumblr is largely too left-wing for me (despite knowing // being friends with several people who frequent that left-wing side); and while I tried once to use Googlebook I found no traction and I am easily discouraged.
I have briefly thought about becoming a twit simply because some people whom I would like to contact (e.g. TotalBiscuit, Caitlyn Vilbrandt, etc.) are most active on that platform, though most everyone I wish to contact in that way I have already found their email addresses to talk to them properly.
I have also been considering making a Reddit account for the same reason I originally made a youtube account: to be able to save good posts or channels(subreddits) that I want to revisit later. Ultimately I've found bookmarking to be just as useful for that since I haven't felt any need to comment yet, and it took me nearly a decade from when I first made my youtube account to when I actually started posting comments.

I love how meta this line was. It was a nice hidden detail, by using words like "manipulate", instead of just saying "talking", nerdwriter is essentially manipulating language to sell that feeling. Cool and meta things like that, is why I love nerdwriter. He is clever and careful about his language, and adds some interesting lines like that in his videos. Love your video essays, keep up the good work.
