  • Changing the battery on your Audi TT is very simple- and only requires a couple of basic tools. It's relatively safe as long as you follow the basic instructions i set out in this video - we don't want an sparks now do we?!

I wish I knew about how the top fuse box unclipped before I attempted to change my battery….. I managed to break my battery cage.

Thanks Bryn brilliant video, just what I was looking for! Very true, don't pay Halfolds £12 or whatever it costs to do such a simple job. My TT I've just bought want start if I leave it for a week without driving. I thought it would be fine up to two weeks on the odd occasion so I might check if my TT is leaking any current while the car isn't driving.

Not as simple as it may seem. Here is my tale of woe. First, be careful with your sockets. I dropped my 10mm socket into the bottomless pit otherwise known as the engine bay. Never to be seen again. Now I know where 10mm sockets go when they want to retire. Second, be careful where you leave your replacement battery. I left mine on top of a trolley bin, where it stayed for a full minute. Then it slowly slid off, and landed on the concrete with a dull thud. The battery casing was cracked, evidenced by weepage of battery electrolyte. Then it was back to the battery shop to buy a second battery, on the same day. In retrospect, it would have been far cheaper to pay the battery shop a modest fee to install it for me.

Had a similar problem when I bought my 3.2 a year ago. Took it out for a drive for an hour or so, so battery had a good charge. When I got back, a neighbour told me that his BMW (2.0 litre) had a flat battery so I jump started his car, parked up and left the car with all systems switched off. The following day.....non start ! When I checked the battery it was a little lower than recommended, but more worrying was physically smaller than standard and slid around the compartment. A quick trip to Halfords and a higher capacity perfect fit battery was installed (by me). Probably could have bought cheaper online, but the Halfords ones are sold fully charged so just fit and go. Not a fan of the boot mount as no spare wheel, but seems easier to change than the bonnet mounted ones.

Great video Bryn, one caveat though: Please don’t tap the battery posts too heavily as they have been known to dislodge internally. Better to open the clamp with a lever then push the terminal down further by hand. Hope you don’t mind me saying it, but I once had this problem. Keep the videos coming, it’s great to see a dedicated Chanel for the TT.

I dont mind you mentioning it at all! I sometimes forget to mention things that are just habit for me- like only giving it a gentle tap

Hi - bit of a novice here. Need a new battery for our 2002 Roadster. I'm reading about things like BEM, needing recoding, and power window cycling? Are these all things which need attention on a MK1? Thanks

For some reason, I thought you'd have to do all sorts of tricks after a battery swap to re-enable some electronics, e.g. auto windows etc

Yes, that's quite unusual for the TT as normally even the simplest job is much more long-winded and frustrating than it needs to be.

The bolt that holds the battery clamp at the bottom seems to be seized. To remove , do you turn clockwise or counter clockwise ? Also tried using WD 40 , but didnt work

The climate control can read the battery voltage???
Follow up question, how easy is it to find/replace the tiny digital information screen that sits between your gauges?
