Brilliant! I wish I had discovered your channel a few years ago! I am 47, swam all my life, every night (breast strokes) and I got a sciatica leg problem and I have not been swimming anymore! Walking and biking in the pool is excellent! Never understood why my knee ligaments were sore after swimming.

I used swimming for knee dislocation recuperation many years ago and still do it today for degenerative disc disease. I like treading and bicycling in deep water to relieve back disc issues and shallow water for walking and stretching. I can actually jog in the pool but never on land. 😅 Then hot tub as a reward.
When walking causes back or knee pain, I have to swim. My aunt used swimming as her preferred exercise and she lived to be 96.

Just got back from swimming and was shocked to see this video (as I have a knee problem on one leg and recovering achilles tendon on the other). However I was doing many of these movements during length recovery breathers (just because they felt so good to do in the water). It's a great way to build up the muscles as the body weight is taken off the joints making the movements so much easier to perform and I feel that I am less likely to damage or tear something.

Thanks as ever Will. What about swimming with shoulder injuries eg. post-dislocation, impingement and other shoulder injuries? Sometimes older people just seem to have shoulder problems as they get older. Which strokes are best and which should be avoided? I’m guessing that it’s not the same as knee injuries (but I might be wrong)!

great @@HT-Physio Not sure of your REACH demographic but I am South West Coast Brit. Columbia and there are a kajillion of open water swimmers here--Salish Sea is our main body and endless lakes. I have given your channel info to various people and will give to more come June when more pple swimming outside again. Also absolute tons of triathletes, incl. endless people in mid 20s through late 30s from Ireland as Canada hands them long length work visas that many renew and then so many just do the paperwork and stay. I spend a lot of time with them and will continue to share your content with them also.

I had hip bursitis for the last two months and was flaring it when doing the side stroke and breast stroke. What helped me recover was treating the inflammation with advil and ice for three days in a row. Now I'm strengthening those hip muscles very slowly and tightening my glutes and abs when sitting. And I'm back to swimming, but only the freestyle and backstroke.

It feels much more of a chore to go to the pool only to do some exercises instead of swimming. When I swim, I relax physically and mentally. I won’t get this from doing some exercises. And I still have to change, shower, dry myself and carry wet stuff back home. It isn’t worth it.
