    One advantage of EM3D over Trnio is that EM3D scans are automatically to scale, whereas photogrammetry has to be resized. So, you'll probably want to start with EM3D, so you have a model to scale the Trnio scan to.

  • @AntonGudenus
    @AntonGudenus Před 3 lety +6

    There is a very important distinction between passive photogrammetry (calculating the 3D mesh from video or photos while the scanner itself doesn't emit any light; Meshroom uses this system), structured light systems (face-id and the like) and time of flight systems (LIDAR).
    Passive photogrammetry (or videogrammetry) has no real range limitations (you could 3D scan a mountain using photogrammetry), it very much relies on a well calibrated camera, needs either multiple photos from different angles while the subject doesn't move and greatly benefits from uniform lighting. It also needs quite the amount of processing power and RAM for large projects as the 3d model gets calculated by image matching alone.
    Structured light systems on the other hand have a strong range limitation, as the projected mesh/points need to be clearly visible, in focus and well spaced. These systems work best with little to no light except for the scanner itself. They need a clearly calibrated projector and camera and can calculate basic 3D information from a single angle and need a lot less processing power.
    TOF systems scan the object with laser beam to measure how long time it needs to get reflected. They have a minimum and maximum range and generally are rather expensive. The big advantage is that they are able to output a highly accurate point-cloud without any post processing.
    So maybe you should try the full body scan in a dark room again, as unintuitive as that sounds.

    I set my original kinect on a tripod, turned about in front of it and the model+texture for my head is good enough to use for an avatar in vrchat, doing a self full body scan was beyond this method, should work if you have someone else to move the kinect around tho.

    An awesome tutorial this is , very helpful for when one has a sculpted piece or object and instead of making molds one just wants to have it digital or to 3d print in whathever scale

    This is really cool. I live in the US, and I make gun holsters as a hobby. I do need 3d molds of various types of handguns tho. And those could be quite expensive. I have a 3d printer, and if I can make a 3d scan of my actual handguns, I could maybe try to make it into an stl file and 3d print it. That way it'll also be cheaper. For my specific handguns they also don't make molds. So I would have to have someone custom make them for me. I'll see if this works. Great video!

    Amazing tutorial! , can you make a video about exporting the mesh flat 3d of the face into a solid model ? so it can be 3d printed out the model. It will be great ! btw, thanks for your interesting Video xD
