Setting the WB to a custom PRESET on the Nikon D750 is a simple and straight forward process in life view. In this quick video, I show you how to do it quickly and perfectly in a minute!
One of the most beautiful You Tube guides I have ever seen. Thanks, Brian. There is no "filling" in this at all. Short, sharp and to the point. Not only can photographers learn from you, but those shooting instructional videos could too. Thanks again. :-)
Carl Freeman oh boy I’m so glad you commented with that!! One thing I hate about CZcams videos is the constant talking to hear themselves talk!! I just want to get the information out and so it’s easy to understand. I don’t pretend to be an art major or a photo snob - just passionate about making great images. Anyone can do it today!!
I am in quarantine and recently got into photography. DAMNNN BOY! you are amazing! i reaaallyyy think other youtubers can learn from you. you have simple instructions that are easy to follow........even for beginniers who have no clue what a white balance is!
Thank you Brain, your teaching method was very so clear and simple for setting custom white balance for all nikon dslrs. Hopefully waiting for your more videos about setting auto focus and particularly auto tracking method for all nikon dslrs. See you soon.
Albert Lo Thanks. I’m not 100% sure that the WB setting here works with all Nikon’s but it certainly is an easy way to get proper WB on the D750 very quickly. :-) Check out my other videos with more to come. I promise :-)
I needed this to correct my WB in-camera for the Tiffen PRO100 filter set that I recently purchased. The 10-stop ND filter is an IRND, and it put a horrible greenish cast on the picture. I never knew I could set a custom balance via LiveView like this. I had previously set it myself by changing the white point, but this is a far superior way. Thank you for sharing!
Troy Young thanks! And yes - that's a super good point you bring up. My only question is this: I try to put out useful and FREE info and I see two thumbs down?!? Lol Can't please them all I guess. Ha Glad you found it helpful.
Brian Robbins hey man! Congrats on the D750. Awesome body!! Get in touch with me about anything. BrianPex on Facebook or Instagram. Where are you from??
Thank you. Just what I was looking for. I feel like the D750 is so secretive and probably has a ton more hidden features that I don't use - but should.
Brian this is great. I viewed it a while back and again today. I agree with all the comments below - you made it simple and to the point! One question for you: after you set the white balance is there any way to know what it is set to in K? I can not find anything in the camera. Tx
Brian well done! I never knew this. Now if I can figure out how to get the graph to appear when doing the white balance check that would be great. Also if I can figure out what temp of Kelvin the Preset is when I reset it, that would be great as well.
Thank you! That did help. I have never thought to set my white balance in live view. Can you also hold the WB button and measure when it is not in live view? That is what I was trying to do yesterday.
Ideal video mate! Thanks for your help! Every other video makes it seem more complicated. Would this technique change if you were to then use flash?? Thanks again.
Kyle Russell Yes it would change. Flashes use daylight balanced lighting. It all depends on if you’re using flash mixed with ambient light or all flash. For example if you’re shooting inside with tungsten lights, they will appear very much yellowish to orange vs the flash. That is when flash gens come in. But if you’re shooting outside and you’re using the flash for fill, just set the WB to flash or around 5500k. If you’re using all flash to light the scene, again use flash WB. THERE are many variables when using flash so depending on the situation, you’d have to adjust.
Kyle Russell that would fix the color temp for the light that’s landing on the grey card. For example say you’re shooting and your subject is lit mainly using flash but the rest of frame is lit by ambient light from tungsten lighting. If you click on the grey card that is being lit by the flash, the area of image that’s being lit by flash will have proper colors. The rest of frame would be off - to which degree depends on how different the colors temps are to start with. Boy this would be a good video since it’s hard to explain with text. Ha. As mentioned, this is where gels come in so big because they allow for a scene to have mixed color temps initially to then be fixed. The flash is then flashing with the same color temp as the rest of frame. It is then you could use a grey card and nail the right balance. Hope this makes sense.
Brian Pex Brian Pex Ah I see. Yeah that makes total sense! Quite technical for my level but a video would always be great! Thank you very much for your help!
Mine worked up to a point, where it stated 'Data Acquired' but the button continues to blink PRE1? Does it mean I now cancel, or did it not work? Now I'm unsure if it's set or not?
Nhel Aremos No. speed lights /strobes shoot at a certain color temp. If you’re in a room with tungsten lighting and use flash, you’ll see the flash is much cooler. This is why they have flash gels to match colors. However, let’s say you’re shooting a fast shutter speed like 1/200th of a second with the flash / strobe firing. The color temp is about 5000-5600 for a strobe or flash. You can just set your camera for flash setting if the flash is the only light.
michael bard Off camera flash? No it won’t. Flash has a daylight balanced color. So if you’re shooting with all flash and no ambient light, you can just use the flash setting which is daylight balanced. If you’re shooting mixed flash and ambient light; the only way to match the color temps is using flash gels.
I could do an excerpt from the vido with white balance as vidio mode of the d750 because in the same way in mine is not giving certp the pre does not get pinscando no
J. Mahoney When shooting with a preset, you’d have to move out of that preset and back into a standard mode or choose another preset. As far as clearing them, they are only cleared when you write over them with a new one as far as I know unless you do a system reset which I don’t think you’d want to do.
clang440 Great question but it's a "depends" answer. Are you using ONLY light from the flashes/strobes? If so it's simple; just set it to the flash setting in WB or daylight. Since all strobes and flashes are daylight balanced at about 5600k, it's a simple setting. If you're using mixed lighting, then the need for gels is a sure thing. This will balance the lighting and get you accurate color settings.
Corliss Media2.0 In live view, hold down WB button and use rear dial to cycle through different WB modes. When at PRE, use the front dial to choose between the PRESETS.
Have you done a video about AF menu items greyed out? I'm wondering about that, and none of the YT videos I've seen have answered that question. Also, I've googled it, and still no answers! Lots of snarky responses, like READ the manual (all 400 pages of it), and stupid answers, but no real help.
Indeed. So what I'm trying to get is a color reading from the camera. It seems like it will do a custom white balance, but it won't *tell* me what kelvin setting the custom WB is using.
I just found an Android app "Color Temp Meter". It does an OK job at reading color temperature through the phones camera pointed at a white sheet. It will help hopefully, because no way am I forking out a couple of hundred bucks for a pro color meter!
Vitali Lisau Yes but the point of the video is to show how to set it in any situation and it’s far more accurate than using auto. Auto gives different results with different shots under the same light depending on what you’re shooting and it is simply the best way to get proper WB when shooting video or anything where proper colors are important.
God like this is sad b/c I specifically looked for this feature and yours is the only one that came up for this camera. Not hard but the method is slightly different from the D5500.
Nikon in camera tip screen for WB stinks is not correct does not mention turning any command dial just to push WB balance button and hold til it blinks to t ake WB pic. Need the video to get correct infor. Just got an Expodisc2 , I did not set manual WB and moslty not a problem, but sometimes it really is need t o set it. Thanks.
PS that is ...did not work by going into WB menu item setting and finding D1-D6, then pushing in WB side item buttom and NOT getting to be able t o set it that way. In camera tip leaves one clueless on what is supposed to be done.
nei theodoro video would be the same process. Just put the camera in video mode. Setting the WB is the same since WB is WB - just finding the neutral in the scene. Now if the light is changing - you’re gonna have to adjust it to the new scene.

Jerrel, great question! When shooting video or JPEG image files (stills), the White Balance DATA is baked into the files and changing it in post will not yield favorable results since this is an adjustment that is being made to a heavily compressed file and you simply lose WB control when compressed. With a RAW file, the WB can 100% be altered AFTER the fact with the RAW converter - Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. There will be NO file degradation at all since a RAW file doesn't really have a White Balance when recorded. You could shoot in TUNGSTEN WB mode with RAW and be shooting under DAYLIGHT and the file will look weird but when you correct your WB in post (using the eye dropper in Lightroom, for example, on a neutral color or something that you know is white in the image) it will look perfect in one click. The RAW files contain the entire visible spectrum of light to the image sensor and the sensor only applies the WB that was set but this is just DATA - not a real file yet. A RAW file is not an image file - we only see the data as a favor to us by the software. So changing the White Balance after the FACT in a RAW file (ONLY A RAW FILE) has no negative effect whatsoever on the image. I hope this explains it well. Thanks for your question!
This is also fantastic information if you are shooting with IRND filters, which because of the IR, they cause an extremely pronounced greenish cast. Even when shooting RAW, it is hard to properly adjust in Lightroom. This method allows me to affix my filter(s) and make the WB adjustment via LiveView, and then I can save the results to one of my user settings. Extremely useful!

clang440 5600k is the color temp to set for strobes/flashes when using the Kelvin temp setting.
clang440 and remember - of shooting raw you can alter this in post without any image degradation.

What I'm trying to do is get the color temperature as a number, which will help me gel my flashes to match the ambient.
Declan Murphy use kelvin setting then. It’s the only one where numbers are the setting parameter.
Also, the 5000-5600 light from a flash is Best altered with gels. You can’t match flash to ambient any other way.
Indeed. So what I'm trying to get is a color reading from the camera. It seems like it will do a custom white balance, but it won't *tell* me what kelvin setting the custom WB is using.
