    Hi, I'm Maggie and I have Crohn's disease. I am thrilled to be here sharing my personal experiences with Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well as living with an ostomy. I'm proud to share a little bit from a clinical experience as well, having worked as a GI pediatric nurse and ostomy telehealth nurse. I am so glad you are here. ♥ #ostomy #ibd #chronicillness

    Thank you Maggie, I love your videos and they give me courage to face new adventures. I do all the ostomy care for my sweet 27 year old daughter, Emily. She is a meningitis survivor (aged 4) and has brain injury and SCI T3 complete. Our wonderful stoma is our best friend!! We are off to Disneyland Paris soon and you help me believe we can do anything we set our minds to! Thank you, from Stephanie and Emily

    Your content is so helpful. I’m having surgery soon to remove structures. I have Crohn’s disease. I have a 50/50 chance of ending up with an ostomy at least temporarily or possibly permanently. I’m really nervous about it. Your videos help me to be more prepared for what may happen and a little less scared.

    When I had my ostomy 21 years ago, I didn't have much support in managing it. One lesson from my stoma nurse before I left the hospital & I was on my own. I figured it out, but it was overwhelming at first. I ended up getting a j-pouch later in that year & it worked fine for many years, but I have since developed tons if fistulas & signs are pointing to pouch failure. I'm seriously considering a permanent ileostomy, but have to wait because I don't have insurance. Seeing how well you are doing with your ostomy gives me hope that I will be able to manage better this time if I choose a permanent ostomy. Thank you for sharing your experience & demystifying daily living with IBD! God bless!!!💜

    Leroy! Lol! Mine's called Kermit (because when he was first born and very young, he used to make a lot of froggie noises). I talk to him all the time! I also say, "BEHAVE!" and if he doesn't, he gets bashed on the head with a dry wipe for his pains! He's generally very good though, because he tends to go to sleep in the middle part of the day, which is when we are able to shower together without the bag (which we both enjoy). I often tell him he's a good boy and I thank him for saving my life. Till the next time he squirts on my feet, when he gets roundly told off!!!
    Here in the UK I think it is more common for us to have one-piece bags, which I use - I have the Coloplast Sensura Mio soft convex drainable bags which are great. I am having to change the bag more frequently these days because my parastomal hernia (called Miss Piggy - neither Kermit nor I like her much) causes more leaks. I've never got on with rings or seals - in fact these used to make things a lot worse, and when I was still seeing the stoma nurse regularly, we tried everything, and then she suggested convex bags and that solved the problem immediately. I am fortunate that my skin is generally very good and I have no trouble with it. I use a barrier wipe, and sprinkle on some stoma powder around the edge of Kermit if there's anything, and generally by next bag change it's cleared up. To dry things quickly, I use the new bag as a fan.
    Kermit says "Hi!" to Leroy and tells him to behave during the wedding. Hope you have fun!

    Interesting that insurance only covers 60 bags per month which works out to only 2 bags a day. I use drainable bags and usually empty an average of 3 times a day. I order 20 bags per month which is a lot for drainable which I change twice a week. I’ve built up a stash that fills an entire bedroom with supplies now so I have enough to be comfortable through any type of possible supply chain issues. I guess it depends on the insurance you have. The plan I have through my employer is very good plus I’m double covered through my wife’s employer as well which has been nice because I typically don’t pay anything for any procedures or doctor’s cost. It probably costs more to be covered that way but its nice to just not ever have to think about it.

    • @beckyg2604
      @beckyg2604 Před 9 měsíci +1

      I wish I had a stash of backup supplies like that! My supply company tells me that Medicare won't allow them to ship until I'm down to a week or less worth of supplies. It scares me to death, because I once went through an entire box of 10 over a particularly bad weekend! My current (although not recent, fortunately) record is 8 changes in 24 hours. I understand they're trying to curb waste, but I wish the people who make these rules could come live our lives for a few days and see how much unnecessary stress they're causing.

I have been so fortunate with my wonderful hubby. I got Kermit in 2015 and he is now so much just a regular part of my life that I don't give him a second thought most of the time. You find your own routines and learn on the job what suits you best - equipment-wise, and diet etc. I eat whole-food plant-based - very rich in fibre which a lot of ostomates throw up their hands in horror at, but my surgeon said I should be able to eat anything I wanted. Just chew everything really well - my theme tune from the beginning was "The Chattanooga Chew Chew" lol! We all have our ups and downs, but having a positive attitude, and above all a sense of humour, will see you through (not to mention faith in Jesus!). I just had the most random thought... Is it possible that you could have a Latex allergy? I know for those with Spina Bifida when you are exposed to medical Latex for long periods of time it can cause an allergy. I don't know if any or certain rings have Latex but it might be worth looking into.

      I'm actually not sure, but also am fairly certain their isn't any latex in most ostomy products!

      @@LetsTalkIBD you'd be surprised what Latex, or something used to make it, shows up in. The only reason it made me think of it was because you were a nurse and always around medical stuff 😆

    Was your stomach swollen where your stoma was? It looked like your stomach was distended. You have a very good outlook on your life with a stoma.

    Why not just use a drainable bag?

      I have a lot of trouble cleaning the end of a drainable bag, so I empty these through the ring. I also find non-drainables much more lower-profile (clips/velcro-ended tend to stick out under my pants).
