In my opinion Sterling is the 2nd best Wide Reciever ever after Jerry Rice in terms of how good he was and what he was capable of doing. He was a different level of player. Like a smarter, more polished, stronger, more techincaly sound version of Terrell Owens with way better hands. A different type of body type at 6'0 218 lbs. Incredible route runner. He was like a better version of T.O. Just did not last as long. Had he stuck there with Favre and not gotten hurt - he is the only Wr I feel could have challenged Jerry Rices records and Packers could have had a dynasty of their own. Certainly would have won at least 2 with Sterling and Favre.

“I am the only player who has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and am the second-best player in my family.”
    Shannon Sharpe on Sterling
Sterling was TO before TO. And unlike TO, he wasn’t a loose cannon that wore out his welcome in a year and a half.
So big and physical. Fast and nimble. Sterling was easily Brett Favre’s best receiver of his career. Sharpe was putting up numbers that made Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin look and stare.
Sharpe was the perfect receiver. Could jump and make possession catches, could cut and run like the best, and had an IQ that had him and Favre on the same wavelength.
Just imagine what could have happened if Sterling never has his injury. 95 Packers went 11-5, won the NFC Central, beat the reigning champion 49ers in San Francisco, and narrowly lost to the Cowboys in the NFC Championship.
If Sharpe is there, they might not have lost that game, could have made the Super Bowl, and won back to back in 95 and 96.
And 97 instead of narrowly loosing to Denver, they could have won and become the first 3 peat team ever.
Green Bay history is changed forever if Sterling never goes down. No doubt with Sharpe, Favre, Wolf and Holmgren would have an extra ring.
It’s such a shame he was injured. I got to see Donald Driver, Antonio Freeman, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, James Jones and Davante Adams. And yet none of them was even close to as dominant and Sterling Sharpe.

      @tempest20000 Před 2 lety +16

@@ReezyR Ah. Sharpe suffered a nerve injury in the second to last game of the 94 season vs Atlanta. The injury is called a neck “stinger”. He would feel numbness and pins and needles in his limbs and feel a lot of pain.
When Sterling’s head was jammed back against the Falcons, this caused Sharpe’s top two vertebrae to loosen which caused the pain. He would have needed corrective surgery to fuse the two vertebrae together which would have been a dangerous procedure, as well as cost him a lot of playing time.
So he just decided to look after his health and retired at age 29. It’s tragic. A HOF career cut short. Sadly I’ve seen that happen twice in my lifetime as a Packers fan. First to Sharpe. And then to Nick Collins. It’s for the best that he looked after his health, but it’s disappointing to see what could have been.

Whoa. I always heard he was a good player, but nah this man was legendary!, To put up those numbers every season in a run heavy era of football, and in a time where running routes over the middle would get your head knocked off. Wow he was unbelievable, he should definitely be a hof he was absolutely dominant.

The wild thing is his brother's teammate (Terrell Davis) getting in gives him hope. They were both similar in that they had careers cut short by injuries but were top 3 at their position and had an incredibly dominant stretch of a few years. Nobody was gonna top Jerry Rice in the early 90s, but Sterling was pretty close to it.

Man-i was I elementary school (in Detroit, MI) during his prime, and aleven though we did have Herman (who also doesn’t get his due of how how freakishly dominant he was), I’m tellin you man-Sterling Sharpe was a different kind of gamebreaking receiver. He was absolutely FEARED....and for very good reason. This man gave us the BUSINESS, twice a year, rain or shine. You had to see him play to really know; he was on a level all himself. Zero weaknesses in his game. He did EVERYTHING unbelievably great.
I still think he was made in a lab that set out to engineer the perfect prototype NFL flanker. And far exceeded what they aimed to accomplish.

Sterling sharpe was an absolute monster. If he didn’t get hurt and played with Brett farve all through his career. He would be up there with Jerry rice as one of the greatest receivers of all time. It shouldn’t matter whether he didn’t played long. He was just different from everyone else and he did enough for the hall of fame. 5 pro bowls 3 all pros lead the league in yards once, receptions 3 times, and tds twice. That’s enough for the hall of fame. Playing in the league long shouldn’t play a factor for the hall of fame. It should be how dominant you were when you played

Sterling Sharpe should be in the HOF. Yes, he only played 7 years, but so did Gale Sayers and Terrell Davis. How many actual good years did Kurt Warner have? 5?. Sterling broke the catch record 2 years in a row and even had 18 TDs his final season with a vertebrae injury. If not for terrible QB play in '88, '90, '91 he would have hit 1,000 every year. In my opinion he was better than Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Andre Reed, or Michael Irvin (Brown and Irvin, respectfully, tore ACLs in '89 though). Heartbreaking to know he would have gotten a ring with Green Bay's success the next 3 years. If they had Sterling, who knows. They might have won 3 in a row.

Sterling Sharpe played all 112 games in his 8 years in the league.
In 1992, a 23-year-old named Brett Favre was given the starting job at quarterback. After years of playing with mediocre quarterbacks such as Don Majkowski, Mike Tomczak, and Anthony Dilweg, Sharpe finally had a talented quarterback.
He responded with one of the greatest seasons by a wide receiver in NFL history.
He caught 108 passes for 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns. Sharpe became just the sixth player to win the receiving Triple Crown-leading in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. His 107 receptions broke the single-season record of 106 set by Washington Redskins receiver Art Monk in 1984.
In 1993, Sharpe broke his own single-season reception record by hauling in 112 passes. He became the first receiver to top 100 receptions in consecutive seasons, and his 1,274 receiving yards and 11 scores ranked third in the league.
For the first time in Sharpe's career, the Packers advanced to the postseason, where they faced the Detroit Lions in the wild card round.
Sharpe turned in one of the most memorable performances in postseason history, catching five passes for 101 yards and three touchdowns. His third touchdown was a come-from-behind, game-winning 40-yard reception with just 55 seconds remaining-which made him just the ninth player to catch three touchdown passes in a single playoff game.
