Tamiya M03 Speed Test - Tomley RC Speed Challenge!

- Here is my attempt to get at least one of my Tamiyas to 30mph! Chatting to Phil at Tomley RC, seems I may have a chance at getting on his Speed Wall with a little Tamiya M03. I asked if I could set a time for an M-Chassis car running brushed on 7.2 volts. He said yes! So here is my battered old Mazda MX5 body on my M03 (which came with the Fiat 500 body). Will it break my personal Tamiya best of 28mph?
Very sorry about the edits on the footage, it was supposed to be all one take. However, at the local park where we did the run, every Tom. Dick and Harry kept walking into the shot and asking things like "can I have a go?" and "is that thing petrol mate?"!!!! They all declined to be in a CZcams video though! But I promise there was no cheating, that's not my style! :)
Many thanks to my best mate, Rob, for doing the camerawork.
Get involved! Take a look at the Tomley RC Speed Wall Challenge here: • Can you beat my Speed?... - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Nailed it Mark! 30mph! A lot of people won’t understand how fast that is for a brushed M chassis! Right.... I’m dusting mine off tonight haha. You have a place on the wall. And you are the fastest Tamiya so far 😉👍
YeeeHaaaa!!! Thanks, Phil, I'm proper chuffed! I wasn't sure it could do it, it only managed 28mph a few months back, but the road was bumpy and covered in leaves - plus I think the MX5 body slips through the air a bit better than the Fiat 500! Yeah, it sure is difficult driving the M-Chassis at 30mph - a real handful! Looking forward to seeing your M03 - but also worried as I know you are very competitive, and I have seen some of your old Tamiya speed runs! All the best dude, and THANK YOU! :)
👍 Nice 30MPH on these tamiyas feels so fast!!
Thanks Steve! Yeah, it seemed a lot faster than 30, but I was really pleased that it got to that milestone number - the fastest Tamiya I have got, and it's brushed!!! And on 7.2v! Thanks for watching, Bro! :)
Congratulations Lads. That was awesome. Especially the ground shots, which really showed that 30mph well. Not bad for a beat up 90's Mazda lol 👍👍😎😄
Thanks so much ~Derek! Yeah, I thought those shots were needed to show the speed, the panning shots tend to make it look slower than it really is! Haha, I knew that body shell would come in handy after all those years, it has many fond memories from racing our M-01 cars in the 90's. Cheers my good friend! :)
Uhhhh, I enjoyed that! Excellent! I might make a "Highest Top Speed Hitting an Innocent Park Visitor" wall now and put you on the top, he he :-) No, seriously, that was a good one. 48 mph! And no you're not a bad driver. I remember how hard it was doing a speed test of my stock M-03 trying to make it go straight, he he. Oh my, just loved Rob's immediate laughter .... I bet if you where youngsters playing like that in the local park your respons from the other park visitors would have been different, maybe :-) Well, definitely in the 1980s.
Haha - what a brilliant comment, Mikael - I would have pinned it, but then it is the Tomley RC Garage challenge! Yes, luckily for me, the guy on the bench seemed quite amused too - he even helped by placing the car back on the road a couple of time - bless him! Man, yeah it was difficult to keep straight, and this is where my old Acoms has a drawback - no DUAL RATE! So I overcompensated every time it veered off course. Yeah, Rob couldn't stop laughing, it's infectious, we had a real titter! Like two schoolboys - I think you are right, if we looked like youngsters, we may have been told to "Clear Off!!!" Thanks for watching mate, I am really pleased that you enjoyed it - just a bit of fun really, I am sure someone will beat this M-chassis challenge speed quite easily! :)
Love the quiet laughter in the beginning when that poor soul was almost taken out!🤣😂 Great video of a Tamiya I’ve never seen before! Congratulations on hitting 30!👍😊
Thanks my friend Jeremy! Yes, Rob's laugh is very contagious! We sounded like a pair of naughty schoolboys! I left the clip in because I though it would raise some smiles, but if I had actually hit the guy it would have been very different! Thanks for the watch and comment bro! Have a great weekend! :)
Great video mark taking out people at the park with a tamiya lol made me smile the whole time😜🤘👍🏻✌🏻🇺🇸
Haha! Yeah, Brent, that was a close call, wasn't it? Lucky we missed him or it wouldn't have been so funny! Glad it raised a smile my friend, thanks for stopping by and have a cool weekend! :)
Sweet Mark nice run with this setup to get you on Tomly RC Garage speed wall!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Michael! Yeah, I think Phil is gonna give me a place on the speed wall - don't think it will stay there long, but it was a lot of fun anyway! :)
Best video of the day :)
30 mph for that small vehicle is faaaast
I know what you mean by people come and ask all kinds of questions, esp the petrol question. "Yeah it's the new silent petrol engine designed by NASA"
Thank you so much Are!!! I am so happy today, so many people making very amusing comments - and yours is no exception! Haha - I have never said that, but it is always EXACTLY what I am thinking! "Yeah it's the new silent petrol engine designed by NASA" - PRICELESS my friend! Have a fantastic weekend, and thank you again! :D
Haha! My nabor lady ask me the same petrol question the other day.. I told her it was a new type of hybrid! lol
Awesome run Mark. I am so much waiting for my tamiya
Thanks very much Pritish! - it's great of you to keep in touch! I have my fingers crossed for your Tamiya to arrive soon! :)
It is a very wonderful attempt to get 30 miles in Tamiya M chassis.👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Kyouwa san! 30mph really did feel fast for this little Tamiya, and the crashes were funny, too! Best regards from Mark... :)
Bloody Fantastic Mark mate, its strong to after the crash in the Bin 🤪 fantastic speed run on a 7.2 Nimh 😱 glad you got on the Speed Board , Great Classic Car to, really enjoyed this Vid so Much, Well done brother 👍😎👍
Haha - the bin was the highlight of this video, brother! Where ya bin - hehe!!! Thanks for the great comment my friend, it was you that got me into this speed challenge - glad you did! Hope you are having some cool down-time - laters bro! :))
30mph 🚗💨💨
Great job buddy 😊👊🏻
Hiya Glenn - hope all is good with you mate - thanks for the comment, yeah, didn't think it was gonna make 30 - wooo-hooo! :)
Fantastic video!
RC car is really cool 👍👍👍
Thanks very much, and thanks for watching! :)
Hi Mark, nice test speed run 👌 👌, big like 👍 👍 👍, I like tamiya
Many thanks, Gerardo! Nice of you to drop by and leave a nice comment - appreciated bro! We had a big laugh making this one my friend - I wish you a great weekend! :)
Faster than I imagined! I have the same speedometer. The fastest challenge is fun!
Thank you very much, TOKAI RC FACTORY !!! Yes, I was surprised at how fast it went too - especially on a 7.2 volt NiMh battery. And yes, we had a lot of fun on this speed challenge - I appreciate your comment my friend. :)
I recon the next time that inocent pensioner comes to the park to chill out, he will be wearing shin pads lolol. Awsomme run though mate and the Mazda looks super cool. Top stuff bro
Oh man! I cried laughing at this comment - no, REALLY! Thanks brotha, I just can't get the picture of this old guy sitting on the park bench in SHIN PADS out of my mind, laughing as I type - cheers Tibster, you have made my day! :D
Lol
This is great content. Have a great weekend! 😍🌹😊😘😍😎
Thank you very much - a good weekend to you too! :)
Awesome BROSKI luv that M-03, I have a similar the M-05 I have to get up on that speed wall that Phil has going. Loved it u crashed n ur mate is cracking up lol
That lightning rod u have on ur remotes gonna poke someones eye out Broski LOL
HAHA!!!!! Broski - love it man, you always crack me up with your aca comments - thanks for the smiles, bro! :D
Cheers Broski - yeah, gotta love an M-car! U sure need to be on that wall, Stevo - I reckon you have lots of cars that could do it - what about the new Arrma? Thanks for always leaving kind comments mate! :-)
Hey mark grab upload buddy :) love the look of that. Nice job on the 1st flipping her lol. Quite a fast little thing. Love old school stuff :) I’ve subbed you channel looks brill.
Thanks Bro! Haha - yeah I had trouble keeping the little Tamiya in a straight line - I blame my old-skool twin stick! Well, it feels like an old playstation controller! Cheers for the sub mate, appreciated. Hope to read ya soon! :))
Nice work Mark!
Cheers dude! Nice to read ya Omar! :)
That wasn't only very fast but also very funny . Hello Mark.I hope you are well.Everybody who tried to drive a straight line with a little onroad Rc Car at full throttle knows how difficult that is . Especially hard when there are still people sitting on a park bench with a jammer in their pocket.:-) There is no other explanation for the fact that you have crashed into the trash can.:-) Have a great Weekend my friend :-)
Thank you my good friend Harry! I am pleased you found this one funny - grown men playing with little cars and trying to injure innocent members of the public has got to be very silly! Yeah, I'm glad you understand how difficult it is to keep these cars going straight at 30mph! But as for the trash can, I have no excuse - silly me! :)
Sweet little mx5 devil there Mark! I notice you drive old school stick radio! Have you ever tried a digital pistol grip radio? I strongly think it will help you improve your driving skills even more especially if you set it up with some limitation on the steering and exponential for fine steering on your high speed test! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mike - glad I kept the old body from the 90's, never throw anything away! I have tried the pistol TX type, but prefer the twin stick! I agree though, when it comes to this kind of testing, I really could do with a dual rate, to reduce the steering sensitivity! As you saw, I was over-correcting WAY too much! Maybe I will try a new TX soon - I may just learn how to use one properly. Thanks again bud! :-)
Really cool looking videos you have there I subscribed keep making videos there enjoying
Many thanks, Rcsnapon! Glad you liked it, thanks for watching, appreciated! :)
looks pretty good bud. Really like the look of this car for sure.. :P
Thanks Nickster! Yeah, the old MX5 / Eunos Roadster is a nice little body shell, it came all the way from 1990! Probably very rare these days, and I go and beat it up!!! Cheers buddy - have a lovely weekend! :)
THIRTY on NiMH and a Brushed Motor!!! 😎👍👍🍻🍺🍺🍺 KICKASS Brother!! Truly impressive indeed.
You're making me miss having a M03 again.... 😖
But entertaining and cool as usual Mate!
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
Cheers Carmine! Yeeha!!! Yeah, was surprised the little beast did it, 2 or 3 mph up on the last attempt with the Fiat 500 body on it! Must have been the wheels and tyres I had spare from the Type-S build that did it! Thanks for the awesome support dude!
Aahhhh My friend, the magical Type S strikes again!!! 😁 I'm sure the taller Tyres gave you that extra edge of speed.
It's just so cool that a 90's Car, with 90's electrics and 90's Batry, broke the magic barrier!! 👊👋👋👋👋👋🎶
TOO RIGHT MATE! :))
Well done, guys! 30mph, NiMh and brushed, is very quick. You could see the speed @ 2:52 and in the low-angle speed shots at the end; my M03´s never gone this fast in its life!
Cheers Del! Yeah, I was both surprised and pleased to see the magic 30!!! And yes, those shots are the best for the feeling of speed, I can assure you I was struggling to control the thing, as if you didn't witness that! Put a cheap Absima Eco Thrust (£10) in it and watch it go my friend! Have a smashing weekend mate! :)
@@MarkBryanRC I wonder where my old 15T HPI Saturn is...my M03 has oil shocks on it unlike my M06...
Go for it dude! Mine was a 15 turn with oil shocks - we could be 30mph brothers! :-)
@@MarkBryanRC I don´t have one of those data logger things to measure the speed.
Ohhh - problem! You could always use a phone with a speed app on it, but wrap it up very well because you WILL crash! :)
Ha brilliant I enjoyed that mate. That poor bloke having a quiet sit down didn't know he was going to be part of your speed challenge. What was up with your wibbly wobbly? It was almost flaccid! Also it looked like something fell off at about 1:52 ? Anyway 30mph with nimh and brushed is very good. My M06 with 2s lipo and brushless only managed 32mph. I reckon it could take a higher gear ratio but probably won't bother as that's quick enough for me. Anyway, hope you have a good weekend planned. I'm not up to much but hopefully RC'ing with Ric on Sunday if the weather behaves. Meanwhile I've got some amazing fruity IPA from the brewery to enjoy! Got moistened down to my pants cycling home in the rain today so I deserve it !
Hi mate - thanks for that Pete! Yeah, poor guy, minding his own business, nearly got an MX5 in the face! We did apologise though, and he seemed to think it was quite funny! Ohhh - the antenna pipe broke on the first roll-over, so it was trailing in the wind, probable helped with the aerodynamics :P Much better off with an erect one though, dude. Yeah, I saw your speed run, but thought I'd try to set a Nimh/brushed record - just need someone to come along with a daft low-turned motor to beat me. Weather is forecast to be crappy here this weekend, hope you get some sunny spells. And that IPA sounds delicious - I like a good pale ale too. Get some dry pants on and enjoy - cheers matey! :)
@@MarkBryanRC I do sometimes wonder what would happen if I damaged someone or something with one of the RC's. The Firestorm at 50mph would hurt ! We do try to be sensible. So the minute you roll over your wibbly wobbly is limp? Mine is so short that it always stands proud. Trouble is that it's hard to see! Hadn't seen the Tomley speed wall before but just had a look. Difficult to find a category that I could win. There will always be someone with a bit more tuning who isn't just mucking about. Well if the weather lets us down this weekend I've got a load of projects on the go so I won't be bored. Pretty much finished my TT-02 Datsun 240Z. Konghead next I think. That kit has been on the shelf way too long. Oh the beer from the brewery is just fab and dangerously delicious. If you ever make it down here I will get you drunk for sure! Laters matey, have a great evening :-)
Sorry for the late reply - too many beers last night! Yeah, after this little episode, funny as it was, it is a bit worrying, I never thought about accidentally hitting someone before, but it is a sobering thought. Yeah, I only had a go at the Tomley challenge for a bit of a laugh, didn't expect to get on it! But that is because I cheated and asked if I could make up my own class! And it will be fun to build another Kong! I'm getting fed up of snapping my wibbly wobbly, it is far too fragile and keeps getting caught on things, but the worst is that it keeps dragging on the floor!!!
That beer promise sounds very appealing, one day matey! :)
God that looked more difficult than I thought it would be. Well done 30mph 😂 flying! That took a fair dunt too was that towards the end of the run or early on?
Hiya Sean! Yeah, it was more difficult than I thought too - at 30mph that little Tamiya had a mind of it's own! Yes, the damage was done on the first pass when I nearly took the old guy out! Thanks for the comment, bud - I hope you have a great weekend! :)
Had to check twice mate ! 30mph with brushed motor and nimh, cricky I though you'd be hitting circa 17mph with that set up. I then realised that the motor wasn't a Tamiya stock silver can - so what was it ? I'm assuming some kind of modified with 12 turns or something similar and did you use a different pinion ? Anyway congrats on hitting the magical 30mph and getting on to the wall bud, great stuff...🔥😎.
Hi there Cosmo! Thanks for another great comment, dude. Yeah, this little M03 is a little modified - cheapo £10 Absima Thrust Eco15 motor, 20T pinion (I think!!!) well, the biggest that will fit anyway. I really think it could go a bit faster with a bigger area to run on, but I can't find anywhere local that isn't full of cars. Cheers mate, wishing you a lovely weekend! :)
@@MarkBryanRC Cheers for the info Mark, and btw that was a cool bodyshell :)
Cheers, dude! That shell has a lot of fond memories from the 90's - so nice to use it again! Rob and I and a few guys from work all got these M01 MX5's, all did our own different paint jobs (with brush paint!) and raced them after work most nights on the car park, awesome fun! Great days! :))
Watch that trash can lol 💪👍
Thanks man! Haha - I thought about cutting those clips out, but they were too funny not to use! All the best bud! :)
Haha, great how the run started. Almost hitting innocent watchers. 😂 Wow 30mph is pretty fast. The beauty is getting unstable with the short wheel base. What gearing do you have installed? Tom installed a 24t pinion with a m05 gearbox in his m03. Have a fantastic weekend my friend 👌👍
Hehe! Yes my friend, I nearly took that guy out - lucky for me he saw the funny side! Yeah, the M03 had a mind of it's own at 30mph, and with no dual rate on my radio it was even worse when trying to correct it. I think I had the 20T pinion installed - I thought that was the biggest that would fit in a M03? Anyway, you too mate - have a great one! :)
@@MarkBryanRC yeah 20t is the biggest with the stock transmission.
Cheers for the confirmation, buddy! So the only way faster now is a 12T brushed! I might try it! :)
cool vid ... i have just uploaded a race from friday night have a squint
Cheers bro - going there soon! :)
So you racing with it ? Cool
Doing my best with it bro - and having a lot of fun! Thanks for the comment and for watching my friend! :)
You should turn your steering rates down to slow down the steering, way too twitchy at speed.
Too right mate! I wish I could turn the steering rate down - but with my 1980's Acoms transmitter - I have no chance! Sorry Mikey, but I am a pure dinosaur with old fashioned tech - it has been my downfall on this one mate! Never mind, still hit the magic 30mph!!! :))
that body and the present body should be on a mo for chessie I do not know why Tamiya to put on a front-wheel drive chassis because the car's rear wheel drive.
Hey Brad, I did say in the video that it was a Fiat 500 with the Mazda body on because it would be more aerodynamic for the speed run - makes sense - right? It was my fault, not Tamiyas! :D
I have a brushed Tamiya M03 and with a 17turn motor snd 2s lipo its capable of around 35mph
Cool! I need to try 2s in mine - 35 mph is a great top speed! All the best - cheers! :)
@@MarkBryanRC :)
@@MarkBryanRC i race mine but due to lockdown i cant race yet :( also ive lost all body pins :( but i just painted an fk8 civic body
@@getoutmecar2940 Hi my friend, I hope you can race again very soon! Those body pins are so easy to lose! I hope your new Civic body came out looking just fine! :)
@@MarkBryanRC thanks
What motor you have?
Hehe - it's a secret! Well, not many people use them - but much better than a Sport Tuned Tamiya! It's the Absima Eco Thrust - they come in all number of turns and are very high-revving, and only about £10!!!
@@MarkBryanRC i have the same frint name, so you can tell me a secret ;)
Haha! OK - I trust you! It's the 15 turn. :))
Ohh i hope he not eat your gears, i put 13,5T and gears are gone.....
Nope - still going strong my friend! :)
1st get in 👌
Looking good mark looking ace whoops to the crash lol 😂 and then that poor bin lol 30 mph good going from you 👌👍
Yo! The KIRKSTER! Number one my friend! :) 👍 👍 👍 GB
@@NSRBOY250 Cheers Kirkster! Yeah, that was really funny - Rob couldn't stop laughing - luckily the guy saw the funny side too - and the bin was just IN MY BLOODY WAY!!! Well, it sure felt fast for a little Tamiya, the little beauty did me proud! :))
You can get a new body based on the new MX-5 or present one.
Oh yes! :))
You could have let the old dude in the trackies have a go you stingey bugger. Especially after he sorted out a few of your crashes. 😬
Seriously though, pretty good speed from the car. You’re lucky those young dudes at the end didn’t fancy a new toy though 🚓
Hehe - thanks Alan - loving the humour this run has bought out - I was gonna cut that bit out, but fun is what this hobby is all about, ain't it? He was a nice old guy, luckily for me, and saw the funny side! Mate - those dudes were sure looking menacing at one point, but came up for a chat at the end, which was nice! Thanks again, really appreciate your time and comments, I wish you a great weekend. :-)
Cheers Mark. Most kids today don’t seem to have any hobbies at all, just messing with social media. My 17 year old son saw me fiddling with an old buggy of mine and couldn’t believe that it went so fast. He persuaded me to get him a Subaru Impreza..... so I got him a second hand TL-01 off eBay which he’s going to help restore. I thought I needed a rally car to race with him so I bought myself a new Lancia Delta on the TT-02. He better not ask me to swap with him 😬
Agreed, kids need more hands-on hobbies. I have tried to get my son involved, but he lost interest in the RC's (too much trouble to maintain them!) but he has got into the camerawork side of things, and help me a lot with the filming, he brings a nice creative element into the mix! Glad your son is interested, haha - you need a big "hands off" sticker on your Lancia!!! :)
