  • A tour around a Ute canopy I've made at home with a built in rooftop tent that folds out of the canopy roof.
    I made this so we would have something quick and easy to take camping.
    I encourage having a go and doing these sort of things yourself, even if it doesn't turn out to look professional you will learn heaps!

    Very very interesting.. I wanted to make a streamline sloping down bed cover but now I realize, thanks to you that I can flip that over the cab with maybe support poles on the front bumper... Thank you for neat unit.

    I think that you can soften aluminum by putting soot on it and then heating it enough to burn off the soot.

    Nicely done and I don't mean to take anything away from that, it has certainly been nicely put together, but the design...
    Whilst you've got lots of 'living space' you're very limited on 'storage space'. Like, where do you store the mattress, or where's the kitchen? Because you need to climb into the alum box, the use of that floor space must be kept clear when the top is popped and used.

    Putting a clear plastic hatch to the cabin from the bed would really make it cool. what does it weigh

  • @bungabening3530
    @bungabening3530 Před 6 lety +1

    Like it! Similar to a Flippac. What type of hinge do you use to allow the roof to swing over and become the floor of the sleeping compartment? It will have the weight of two adults and one child in it yet it seems to hang over the cab with no support. The Flippac uses a torsion bar to achieve that effect. How did you do it?

    • @bengineering
      @bengineering  Před 6 lety

      It's a continuous stainless steel piano hinge. But a pretty big one (3mm pin I think). There are no other supports. It doesn't seem to be an issue as the hinge point is right on the edge of a the canopy frame. I have had 3 adults up there.

    Beauty! How did you get the flip to drop down so smoothly? Gas absorbers?

    • @bengineering
      @bengineering  Před 4 lety +1

      The side doors have gas struts but the lid does not. The lid is light enough to just open and close it manually from the inside.

    How does the tent go in tropical conditions/heavy rain?

    • @bengineering
      @bengineering  Před 7 lety +1

      Noblebird02 I've had a bit of a leak a couple times. Both times were very heavy rain storms. Ive patched where I think the water was coming in with another seal but haven't had a chance to test it since.
