Home Made Indestructible Awning

  • DIY awning alternative to those cheap EZups you buy at the store. It's a little over-built and not the prettiest awning around but it's bomb proof and should last the life of the trailer. Yes I picked up my awning that got destroyed (we never leave trash when we go riding). I was worried the extra weight would make the trailer less stable but it seems to have no effect. It doesn't lean any more or feel heaver when moving it around by hand, so overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

    This is awesome. As a Electrician we always use unistruts so I know a lot about them. I bought one of those flimsy 10x10 canopy tents with the thin poles. I set it on the first day in my back yard and the breeze mash it up. I still have the canopy tent is still good. I make one of these for the canopy. Thanks.

  • @TheMightyCookieShow

    I think I will go with this route, something like it anyway. I begin a restore on a 92 skamper next week, the awning on it now is trashed, and the ones to replace it in my view are far too expensive for what they are and how they work. I might swap out the tarp though with actual awning fabric, just for a better look overall, if nothing else. This will all be figured out when I finally get the skamper here and can start taking down all my numbers. The skamper though will look like a brand new unit when we are finally done. And starting now, very exciting, we'll have her ready to roll by the time Spring gets here.

    You can find longer lengths at any metal supply retailer (check you local listings, they may even offer free delivery, often with a minimum order); and cutting with either a metal band saw or metal chop saw would work excellent as well, but anyone with access to those tools would already know this.

    Looks like a real solid design. You know, instead of buying 6 angle grinders Harbor Freight sells portable electric band saws now. Over the years I have run miles of unistrut working in chemical plants so I am very familiar with it. I didn't notice any spring nuts on your awning, do you use them at all?

    • @lowlypawn
      @lowlypawn  Před 8 lety +3

      The HF portable band saw is 140 bucks, I recommended the Harbor Freight angle grinder because they are only 15 bucks. The reason I have 6 is because I have slowly been acquiring them over the years. I figured someone with not a lot of tools who wanted to build something like this could afford a 15 dollar angle grinder. I didn't use any spring nuts because I didn't see a good way to utilize them. I'm hoping someone will take this basic idea and improve upon it. If you see ways to improve it please let me know. Thanks.

      @lowlypawn  Před 8 lety +3

      I didn't weigh it but I would guess 40-50 pounds. I was concerned about that much weight on the roof but it turned out to be no problem. You can't even feel the extra weight even when moving the trailer by hand. I use the trailer all the time and it's been working perfectly on the highway and on rough dirt roads.

    awesome idea. thanks for sharing. can you estimate how much you spent total(not counting any redos)?

    • @lowlypawn
      @lowlypawn  Před 7 lety +6

      Good question. 4 superstruts (thick) $20*4=$100, 2 superstruts (thin) $16*2=$32. Tarp $20, 4 rachetstraps $17, Bungees $16, Bolts/nuts, brackets and other stuff $20-$30 I think. So rounding up and adding tax I'm going to guess $220 minimum to duplicate my exact setup. Hmmm more than I thought, and I probably spent closer to $300 total figuring stuff out and mistakes. But I'll tell you what, even at $300 I would do it again because I really do love how it's basically part of the trailer and is never going to fly away. Nothing is more frighting then when a gust of wind comes along and you think your EZup is about to go flying in to the track during a motorcycle track day event. Also the tarp, ratchet straps and bungees are useful to have stored on your trailer year-round. Hope this helps.

    @lowlypawn...Question: It looks to me as if this unit is not secured to the ground. That is to say, it's not weighted or driven into the ground. If that's incorrect, please advise. If correct, has that proven to be, problematic?

    • @lowlypawn
      @lowlypawn  Před 7 lety +3

      Well kind of. If you watch closely I recommend when it's windy to take a ratchet strap (or two) and connect the frame to the bottom of the trailer. This creates a triangle that pulls the awning into the ground. So basically the wind would have to be strong enough to flip the trailer over which won't happen, unless your in a tornado :)

      I've been thinking of a way to quickly attach the tarp to the frame. Maybe some pins or bolts that stick up that match up with the eyelets in the tarp. Then use a few pins to secure it, something along those lines. If I do come up with something good I'll do a follow up video.

    "I have 6 because I have changing disc " bahahahhahaha it takes all of 15 seconds

    • @lowlypawn
      @lowlypawn  Před 7 lety +2

      Haha I've never changed a disk in 15 seconds in my life, maybe one minute. Here is what used to happens to me when working in the garage. I'm cutting some metal and now I need to start grinding. So I find my grinding disk, find the tool to change the wheel. Nope wrong size, go find the correct size tool (why do they come in two sizes?) Unplug my grinder, switch disks, plug the grinder back in and then finally get back to work. Then I find I want to switch it back 5 minutes later! So annoying. There are 4 wheels used all time, cutting, grinding, wire and flap. So a good argument can be made to own at least 4 angle grinders. I don't know how I ended up with 6 :) I was actually surprised I had that many when I made this video. I think I was walking through HF a few times and for 20 bucks I thought to myself there is no reason NOT to own a few extra grinders. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
