  • Serj Tankian made his first foray into public life as the idiosyncratic lead singer of the late ‘90s metal band System Of A Down. After releasing five platinum-selling albums with the band, and establishing himself as one of modern-day music’s most outspoken human-rights activists, in 2007, Serj left System to pursue his own artistic pursuits. Since then he’s released solo albums, composed symphonies, scored documentaries, and most recently started producing a line of Armenian coffee.
In May, Serj also released a memoir called “Down With The System” that details his personal story that starts in Beirut before his family emigrated to Los Angeles during the Lebanese Civil War in the ‘70s. Serj’s memoir also details his family's history in Armenia, and their chilling plight during the genocide of 1915.
On today’s episode Leah Rose talks to Serj Tankian about why he always felt like an outsider-including in System Of A Down. He also explains why it was so essential for him to exercise his demons on stage, and the one fundamental change that needs to take place in order for him to record new music with the band.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

My son wasn't into music when he was younger, and his father and I are very into music. We both have very eclectic taste. Our son is 17 now and has developed his own music taste. He has recently gotten into SOAD among other bands I absolutely love and I was thrilled. I love that we can now bond over a shared love of music. It has come full circle I listened to Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin etc with my parents. Now I can share SOAD, Megadeth, Metallica and more with my son.

Serj and SOAD are responsible for opening my eyes to injustice and political corruption as a teenager.
I remember being 15 in 1998, playing PLUCK to my English class as part of an assignment on analysing the meaning in our favourite music. I stood up and talked about the Armenian genocide and my English teacher was amazed to see a new generation learning about politics from their music.
    I've never looked back since. At 41 I'm a commited anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian, non-conforming pacifist.
I think all of that was inside me anyway but I am so grateful to SOAD for showing me that it was possible to go against the grain. Plus they gave me so many happy teenage memories!

When i read the first 2 paragraphs, i was gonna write "but be careful ! things really have changed since back then, culture is not the same, problems are not the same"
And then you write you are an anti-capitalist and "non conforming" and thought ... they got you man. Capitalism is not the problem nowadays, being "conforming" is not the problem nowadays. But you have to look into this for yourself. Read history, compare it to nowadays, go talk to people on the street and on internet discords, subreddits etc... You have to do it by yourself, good luck !

"My kid's not into music, it's very disappointing." Yikes, hope that was a joke from the interviewer. Right after Serj was talking about how he wasn't pushing music on his kid.

Rick Rubin why did you ruin this band and also RHCP and many other bands with compression?
