  • Today we’re excited to bring you the next installment of our John Frusciante interview series. John first came on the podcast back in April to help celebrate the release of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Unlimited Love. Then he returned in mid-October to discuss Chili Pepper history, one album at a time.
On today’s episode we’ll hear John talk about the Chili Peppers brand new release-their second number one album in six months-Return Of The Dream Canteen. John also picks up a guitar and walks Rick through his pre-show warmup and demonstrates how he came up with the now-classic major to minor chord changes on “Under The Bridge.” And, he talks about how he was able to overcome his desire to impress others while recording Stadium Arcadium.
Stay tuned to the end of this episode for details about part three of what is shaping up to be an intimate series of interviews between Rick Rubin and John Frusciante.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

I love you Rick doing this, and also the opportunity to hear my ultimate hero is just one of the best times of living... But just to mention to John, Rory Gallagher. Your music is so close, and I am really surprised, that you did not mention, actually never mentioned Rory Gallagher's name... Because of the tapping, about whom invented tapping... Not Rory, but he was the very first pioneer in music whom used it... Check Rory out please... He is like noone else... By the way... this is an amazing podcast and it containes meditation too... Just how wonderful is this thing... I know it is not possible but... I would love to talk to John once in my life, especially about Rory... I would like to know what he thinks of his legacy...

@@shawnmcvey7789 Cobain and Picciotto as well. I'm not saying that EHV and Hendrix were influences, although the were, I'm saying Frusciante is at their level when it comes to what he does with a guitar.

Love these interviews with John, my bucket list included seeing John live with the Peppers one day, and it came true in August I got to see them in Toronto, on the floor in front of John about 9 rows back, truly an unforgettable night !! 🎸

Saw them twice live with John recently and was blown away. Almost to the point where I didn’t know how to digest it bc of so much going on. I watched the live recorded versions of the shows and was even more blown away. Like I didn’t have time to completely take it in and digest what was happening in front of me. It went by so fast.

@@burdman1333 Same experience for me, it went so fast I tried to absorb it, was like a dream, I've never seen such a happy crowd leaving the show everyone chatting with each other about the show all the way onto the street, such a euphoric experience. I watched all the CZcams videos of the shows leading up to the Toronto show so I knew I was in for the best concert of my life !! Really hope they do another tour for the new album.

This was way more important to me than the rhcp albums. So many of the artists ive studied since i was a child and throughout adulthood are shared by Frusciante. I have printouts of chord and scale charts from holdsworths instructionals pinned to my walls, and some of my earliest experiences with recording music were trying to recreate zappa songs by ear by layering guitars. I spent many years looking in a mirror with my guitar and playing randy rhoads songs, pretending i was him. I couldnt be prouder to be part of that musical tradition, even as a very very small part. To be able to hear the most prominent and recent member of that musical ancestry sharing so much of his thinking means the world to me. His explanation of how he sees and feels music especially was important to me because I've done the exact same thing all my life since i got my first audio players and toy instruments when i was very little. Im not aware of anyone else who talks about music this way. I spent some time in college studying western philosophy and ive read dozens of philosophy books but art and music are rarely talked about, and if it is with very little practical application or insight into actual experience. I think ive read more about why there's an avoidance to talking about art and music than anyone actually talking about it.
Theres this idea in a lot of ancient tribal religions that we owe what we have to those who came before us - ancestor spirits. we owe them a debt that cant be fully repaid, only passed down through more generations. Every generation the debt owed grows and so do the gifts we inherit. I will do my best to do that with my own music students and in my own art.

Always blown away by the sheer depth of these interviews!! How many guitarists are reflecting on the moment saying they have to balance the past, future, and present together to be playing the right notes 🌶 imagine John Frusciante teaches lessons as an instructor. He is so brilliant beyond anything I have seen. And then just when your pleased with two they say let's go for a third. What a treat!!

As a painter I have something similar to what John is talking about. In my case of course it is maybe even more 'visual', as it usually ends up being a painting. But it all starts with the hint/feeling/presentiment of something that is going to take physical form. Sometimes it's more or less defined, but there is no doubt that this is the SOMETHING that makes art happen. I believe everyone can experience that, just stay opened and relax, you cannot force it!
