Weâre back with the third episode in our John Frusciante Returns series. Over the past couple of months Rick Rubin and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers have come together to tape an on-going series of conversations that dives deep into Johnâs philosophical and practical approach to writing music and playing guitar. If you havenât heard the previous episodes, make sure to check them out.
Today, weâll hear John talk about his love of electronic music and how he struggled to fall back in love with guitar-based rock before recording the Chili Peppers latest set of albums. He also talks about the process of making Californication, and near the end of the interview, John picks up a guitar to play through some of his most well known guitar parts from that album.

Yesss itâs great to hear someone talking to him that actually knows his work and brilliance. The vpro guy was cool. But I wish there were more who actually appreciated him asking the questions and interacting.
I would love to see an interview of Frusciante with someon incompetent and talk about incompetent things, like there are so many sillt things that I would like to know about JF, like do you do your own dishes? no one asks things like that. But I agree with you man, Rick is the best interviewer of the world

John is one of those guys that has been from one side of the spectrum to the otherâŠFrom very near death lows to the highest of highs in more ways than one! Heâs very experienced in life and many genres of music. Heâs incredibly intelligent ,heâs the kind of guy you wanna listen to when trying to learn about life and music! Heâs been through it all and heâs still just a young man. Love you Johnâ„ïž

@@lomarsweed6604 I am a musician. Trying to write some new songs, mainly trying to fall in love with the guitar again, build better habits with it.
32:53 This is what makes their live shows SO GREAT! When you watch them play, they're not just mindlessly copying their own songs, they're genuinely creating music and taking risks on-stage. It makes their music feel alive in a way that other bands rarely achieve anymore.
The show this last tour when John's pedalboard went out, and he ended up plugging straight in to his Silver Jubilee amp onstage -- that was such an awesome and authentic moment that conveyed how little there is between these artists and the sound they create.
The Comerica Park show in Detroit? He had some big tech issues there, and plugged in to his amp for Californication. I was there for that show lol

As someone who has been playing since they were 11 years old (now 35) my biggest advice would be to learn a variety of songs you enjoy in different styles, drill your scales (particularly major, minor and the pentatonic forms), and be diligent about proper picking and strumming technique from the get-go. And practice with a metronome! When we're unaware of bad habits for a long period of time it's hard to break them later. The exercises and drills become fun in time, even though they're difficult at first, and they really do translate to making you a stronger player who has a clearer understanding of what he's truly doing on the fretboard. Have fun with it and enjoy the ride!

I could listen this podcasts forever. I really would like to hear about Stadium Arcadium era and end of the Tour and about John's feeling on that point just before leaving.

So John used to play along with hiphop records... on bass... playing with his pinkie finger. For some reason this stands out more for me than anything else in this interview.

I canât stand how much I love these episodes with John Frusciante. I feel spoiled and heâs such a champ for meeting with Rick Rubin to continue these talks. Would love to hear JF in other interviews talk about anything else besides music though, I feel like he has to talk about it too often
I remember being 14, just worshipping Californication, By The Way, and the newly (at the time) released double album; Stadium Arcadium. I was there for John and I always wanted to know what he was thinking, how he got there, etc. Thanks to Broken Record for giving me something I never thought Iâd get!

These are the most coolest Frusciante interviews ever. Iâm just blown away by his knowledge of all the different bands and how he brought them into his style. Especially Nirvana, wow, taking a song like Even in His Youth. I get why I love that chorus now. I agree with him, In Utero is the best album.
Finally, I have been waiting so long for the continuation of this series of incredible interviews! Thank you for your work, it is very important and interesting.

33:25 When he talks about Chad being more sensitive and responsive to music when playing, i was thinking ( i might be wrong) it's becouse of previous tours with Josh . Becouse Josh is also a drummer, and he mentioned many times that he always paid extra attention to Chad's playing and when Chad was doing smth different or exiting or surprising Josh used to give him a look , a smile . Maybe that interaction made Chad play like he plays now , the thing Frusciante said here . Probably wrong, but it crossed my mind while i was listening
The scar tissue solo is one of the main reasons why I picked up my guitar
Under the bridge is one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar and I've been TRYING to play it for 7 years now and whenever I play that song it still sounds like I just learned it yesterday. Such a hard song.
The Scar Tissue solo - expecially the last one - is the main reason why I started being really seriously passionate about music when I was 15.

John Frusciante is THE MAN as far as I'm concerned. Love his solo stuff, and when he sings chorus's and plays solos on the chilli's songs the music is elevated and just soars. I'm so glad he's back. Can't wait to see him play with them again nexyt year!

John is so right about rhythm guitar parts that don't repeat themselves being way harder to learn than solos. I notice that particularly when I learn Jimi Hendrix songs. I've never took as long to learn a song as I have with a Hendrix song. There's just so much going on that being able to not just remember the notes, but also the order in which the parts are played is a lot.

Man o man if Frusciante did a tell-all biography That would be the best. The deeper sides of him are so interesting to me as man trying to explore his boundaries.
It's very interesting to me through this series, especially in this one, as a kid - I looked at John very similarly to the way he was looking at a lot of styles and eras of music that influenced him. I loved his technique to add space, while the songwriting/production elements he'd add to those Californication to Stadium Arcadium era would bring this popular rock album together. Taking that backseat for others to roll in and do their part.
Now, 20+ years later, I have ventured far away from the music of my own childhood, make music that does not sound anything like John's work, but when he picks up the guitar and explains how intervals of two far away notes add meaning much more than strumming what the basis of the song - it becomes a lot more interesting and implied. Like you hear where it came from, you know what it is, but it's way more meaningful to add space.
When Rick is like - "Interesting, I would've never heard the similarities" but I can hear how that might've influenced it, I think about the different viewpoints we the listener come from vs. John the writer who conceptualized it vs. Rick who produced it among hundreds of other albums from all these different genres, it all makes sense. Thanks for keeping this series going, team!
Iâm sure it helps that heâs talking to Rick but good to hear this much from John. Definitely feels like heâs warmed up compared to the John we saw in the announcement videos for the recent tour/album.

John really dove deep into the interval playing style on Niandra Lades and Ususlly Just a T Shirt....I remember back in 99 when Scar Tissue first came out the opening riff sounded so much like a more complete odea taken from his Usually just a T Shirt.
They absolutely flirted with the muted synchronized picking idea of Parrallel Universe back when they did Felas Cock...another song I saw as a definite progression of an idea....although I like Felas Cock more

He uses this shape a lot though, check out his that tutorial he did for a guitar magazine from his couch in 2006. Itâs more or less the same shape he uses for Scar Tissue and the same as Paul McCartney used on Blackbird

Been listening to 1 part of the interview per night. Fucking awesome. John and Rick could be egotiscal shallow assholes if they wanted to be, but they're both so humble and just truly love the art.
I know a lot of artists and creative people relate to John's story, especially with harnessing creativity and then not knowing what direction to take it in. How to make yourself happy but please the people around you. It's a really tough situation. People want your gift, but its yours and you're left feeling empty after giving so much. Idk it just resonates for me.
I could go on for hours but I shan't. Respect to these 2, big up john always. Icon.

You know Rubin is special by hearing these interviews. John is a very complicated guy when it comes to making a connection through conversing, but Rick has a way of making someone feel comfortable and open up, enjoying conversation. Love these interviews and love hearing John enjoy them.
