Western Star Trucks Sales, Inc. is an American truck manufacturer headquartered in Portland, Oregon.
In 1967 White Motor Company started the Western Star division as White Western Star with a new plant at Kelowna, British Columbia, sharing headquarters with White in Cleveland, Ohio. White Western Star trucks in that era typically used cabs from its sister company, Autocar. Western Star production was moved to Ogden, Utah, but the brand was not included in the 1981 sale of White's truck business to Volvo, instead being sold to Bow Valley Resources and Nova Corporation, each owning 50%.[1][2][3]
In 1991, Western Star Trucks was purchased by the owners of the Western Star Australian subsidiary, Terry Peabody and Bob Shand.[1] Western Star Trucks acquired the bus manufacturer Ontario Bus Industries (renamed Orion Bus Industries) in 1995. ERF trucks was purchased by Western Star in 1996.[4][5] It was sold in 2000 to MAN.
In 2002, Western Star production was moved to a plant in Portland, Oregon.[9] 4700, 4800, 4900 and 6900 model trucks are still manufactured in the Portland Truck Plant. In May 2015, the Daimler Trucks North America plant in Cleveland, North Carolina, began to build 4700 and 4900 models, as well as assemble all new semi tractor 5700XE models.[10]
More recently, Western Star MBT 40 trucks operated for bauxite mining in Guinea.
The 4700 Series is Western Star's entry-level model and is available in truck and tractor applications, both with a 110-inch (2,790 mm) BBC. In vocational applications, its engineering helps reduce upfitting time and costs for body builders, and can be outfitted for virtually any vocational application. For on-highway use, the 4700 is available in a daycab and with 40" sleeper configuration and is primarily used in short haul applications.
The 4800 Series offers more powerful engine options than the 4700 and features a 109-inch (2,770 mm) BBC. Western Star provides the truck as a bare chassis and cab, which can be fitted with a dump body, mixer, tank, crane, or other structure by a bodybuilding company as desired by the customer. The factory-installed twin steer option is also popular on this model for dump and mixer applications. Tractor versions are also available.
The 4900 Series features a 123-inch (3,120 mm) BBC. This is a multi-use truck/tractor which is targeted at a variety of industries. The truck can be built as a tractor with fifth wheel, bare chassis for a bodybuilder to outfit, or a lowered-cab model (Low Max) for auto hauling. The 4900 is available in five configurations including Extreme Duty and Twin Steer.
The X-series features a 122-inch (3,100 mm) BBC and is available as set forward or set back front axle. Engine choices are Detroit or Cummins with up to 605 hp / 2050 lb-ft. The truck can be ordered as daycab or with sleeper.
    The 5700XE launched in 2015.
The 6900 Series is the highest capacity model built by Western Star.

I always enjoy the big rig kits, when I was a kid I remember Overdrive magazine having the model of the month contest. It was a magazine for truckers, and I always thought that was a neat section.

Another example of one method to model building success. Not right. Not wrong. But a tried and true, step by step path to assured fun with minimal frustration. Thanks again - it's a BEAUTY.

Now that this kit is back and readily available again I may just have to kitbash in a 8V92TA and resin cast a goblin face so I can replicate the Happy Time Toyz truck from Maximum Overdrive.

As a long-haul truck driver for 22 years - I don't ever remember "making" my bed in the sleeper. No one but me was ever in it.
I like the idea of some after market parts paks for these kits. The "pogo stick" and the red & blue air lines would be a nice touch.
Finally, on the 1 to 1 rigs - the fuel tanks do not have seams like this kit. A certain amount of skill to remove the seams and repaint
in a gun metal shade would fit the bill nicely. Over all, it looks like this was re-released as a pretty good rendition.

Why would anyone say anything negative about your builds? You are simply doing review build ups. Showing us what is in these kits and what to expect if there is any factory misprints or defects. And you tell us that you're not going into great painting details. Mainly due to the time factor. I say to hell with them. Chris you rock this crap. You videos are excellent and extremely informative and entertaining 👏 👍 😀

Very well done on the Western Star 4964 Chris! My first model kits that I built back in 2002-2003 while finishing high school were the Italeri heavy truck kits and I must say that they are definitely the most detailed and easiest to build! Within the last 3 years, I've built a few of their Euro semi tractors too! I am glad to see AMT bringing these out! I need to grab this one! FYI that 4964 is a 1980's era with a Cummins 400 BC!

Having also built Italeri's Freightliner FLC I can attest that kit fights with this one for no.2 spot on the easiest and best looking kits out there. The Western Star and Freightliner kits have to be on your list if you're looking for great looking and nice building kits out of the box!

Absolutely gorgeous truck; I love them especially big rigs like this. I guess, this is yet the best model ever technically speaking. That front grill and general molding makes a great model. Building the cab and chassis along with suspension from zero it takes a lot of nerve as could end up deformed or not really well finished. What is most impressive about your building technique is you didn't need any kind of jig to make fit the whole thing at the end. You even remind me that I should get a visor for my "Pete" 357 all in red from chassis to hubcaps, to body and interiors. I like very much chassis matching body color. If you watch truck shows, you'll notice that almost are like I say so I decided to build and paint mine, same color overall. Try it Chris, bet you wont feel down once the work is done. Well, my dear Sensei, you are now "3rd DAN blackbelt". Congrats and thanks for such a gift.

Great dash decal and chassis stickers. And WOW look at that grill, the mirror brackets look closer to scale too. All the above, (except grill) would be great aftermarket parts.
I like to model in the 50's 60's and 70's time period but MAN! This kit looks like a Damn Enjoyable build. I may have to get it anyway.

Looks good Chris... by the way the "extra" visor in chrome will not fit the Star. It's for the Freightliner FLC and that's because all Italeri rigs are based on the first issue Freightliner and all kits followed suit after that with the same frames, tanks, battery boxes suspension, diffs and the same Cummins 400 engine. The exceptions are the Peterbilt 377/378 issues with true Peterbilt frame, suspension and Detroit 60 Series engines. Cheers :)

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  Před rokem

Correct, as Nick says, 1/24th would be the length of the regular truck divided by 24.
1/25 would be the truck divided into 25 equal pieces.
1/6th scale would be the truck divided into only 6 huge pieces.
(This is just a very simple way of thinking of it)
The higher the number, the smaller the pieces as you 'cut it up'.

    • @nickbilleck1107

Completely depends on the person and how detailed they want to be or how much experience they have.
Don't compare how long it takes someone else to how long it takes you, that ruins the hobby for too many people.
I build fast and I build hundreds of models, and I don't sweat every tiny detail, rivet or color so I got this truck done in two days.

Nice build but priced way out of most guys budget. The price is ridiculous.

What is the whole point of chrome, anyway? Cadillac fins, truck fuel tanks, bumpers, headlight bezels and more!

i just got 2 of these yesterday, and im currently printing out a test 3d green goblin mask for one=gotta have a MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE version, the only thing i dislike is visible glue joints where the real thing does not have them, but like you say Chris BUILD IT FOR YOU, other than that this is another cool build
