A SchoolBreak Special starring Drew Barrymore, Corey Feldman, and Tatum O' Neil. About staying away from drugs and addiction. A heavy but essential topic.
Well, this After School special was done a short time after Drew was release from her rehab. Ironically this was filmed in the same ASAP rehab hospital that Drew was in. This was from Drew's autobiography she wrote of her life.
Tatum O’Neil was so promising. Youngest person to ever win an Oscar. She was so good in Little Darlings, but her parents were absolute car crashes and then she started doing drugs. Sad.
Me too. I have a whole playlist of Public Service Announcements on here from the 80s, before they want extinct. I uploaded most of my old VHS recordings to remind us how things used to be.
@@sterlingsubs I’ve gotten Corey to comment on the “I knew you were black right away” scene on twitter in the last few days. He’s been interacting with us
@@TrentonWade That is awesome. He's very down to earth. I admire him for having the courage to expose pedophilia in the business. Check those interviews. Though it's taken a toll on his mental health.
I was in lured into the original drug rehab that this show was obviously (loosely) based on back in 1980 at the age of 16 and was stuck there until the middle of 82. It was brutal and none of the movies that later came out about it came anywhere even remotely close to conveying the horor that went on inside, at least in the early days. In reality, the consequence for saying you didn't belong there was being sat on by 3 or 4 guys (or girls depending upon your gender) on a concrete floor for seemingly endless hours in front of the entore group which, unlike this depiction, consisted of a steady population of 300 kids (150 boys/150 girls). Today at 59, I have chosen to forgive all involved and I pray the same for the countless brothers and sisters who share my experience. I do know that the program softened up as years progressed due to lawsuits of abuse and subsequant public awareness. I learned that when it finally closed in the early 90's, they only had around 15 kids total at a time and you could leave at will.
Wow, that is really disturbing! As if rehabbing isn't hard enough with sensible staff and methods. So sorry you went through that. You should make videos or write a book about your experience.
Monica Calhoun was such a cutie! These after school specials really made an impact. I was a kid but it scared me seeing teens spiral because of bad decisions
I am not going to never forget this show here which features a former child actress who once played in ET the extra terrestrial back in 1982 because she played the role of little Gertie back then and now she plays in this after school special which shows Aden 15 year old Drew Barrymore who plays a drug addict In this program.
These old shows need to be shone today. There are far too many young people these days that are doing drugs and treating it like it’s nothing. It’s so sad that the younger generation still hasn’t learned their lesson.
In the 70s and 80s, we were warned in school, a lot. They used to have Public Service Announcements on TV about it. I have some old ones uploaded here. There's not much warning about anything anymore, unfortunately.
Drew had terrible mum she neglected her and hook her on cocaine and alcohol. Her mum took to nightclub when she was a little girl that the first time she started taking cocaine and alcohol. Drew went to rehab and become clean. Drew got kid's now and she good mother.
Extremely realistic. Not everyone had a happy ending, but at the same time lots of them did remain drug-free and recovered. A film or story can be vividly realistic without being depressing.
Agreed. Truth matters. In all honesty, they probably wouldn't have all gotten along as well as they did. But it's good to give good examples of what we can aim for.
Drew had already been to rehab and written her 'Little Girl Lost' book at this point. She made this to encourage kids to 'Just say No'. Corey Feldman on the other hand...
Feldman was/is such an overacting plunk by this stage of his career. I mean, who's he trying to be here? Judd Nelson? I googled this thing and it says it was originally aired in March of 1989. That would make it being filmed at one of the heights of Corey's addiction (heroin and coke, I think) since he entered treatment for 10 months and only got out at the end of 1989. Hmm... this movie couldn't have influenced him to get help, could it? Nah! oh. And I say heights of addiction because I don't believe for a second that he's clean even now. No straight person could produce what he calls music. :D Stellar cast for a school break special, though.
Haim and Feldman had the WORSE agents. Haim was actually a Bonifide STAR in 1987. Then Feldman was still going with cool role in Tom Hanks 1990 "The Burbs." Feldman & his agent ruined his career in early-mid 1990s. Picking the worst roles like this shit! Feldman was actually great in the Major Movie "The Burbs." He should kept rolling. Liked Corey Haim ALOT more but there was no hope by 1991 for him. DrUgs. Corey Feldman had ton potential for comeback after 1990 "The Burbs."
I saw this on tv when I was a teenager..and even though I fully support drug addicts and alcoholics etc..getting the treatment they need rather than the medieval practice of just throwing them in jail..and leaving them there to endure detox surrounded by dangerous and abusive people , who don't give a damn ..even though appreciate any treatment facility that treats the sick as being sick and treating them accordingly..but even as a kid ,when I saw this it revealed to me how exploitative and inappropriate and substandard the so called treatment actually was ..these are kids addicted to serious drugs who have serious problems that caused them to start using in the first place..and yet the only qualification the group counselor has , to help these very at risk kids is that she's a former patient there? No degree in child and adolescent psychology..no career history of counseling troubled teenagers and dealing with their equally messed up families ?the only thing literally that separates her from them is that she "graduated"..and the proprietor of that clinic whom I might add probably charged their parents an obscene fortune ,while he pays little to nothing in comparison by using former patients as counselors and in positions of power over the patients then pockets the rest..with no regard as to exactly how great the likelihood of success for them will actually turn out to be..because if they fail it's all blamed upon the patient for" CHOOSING " to relapse..they have quite a racket indeed ,first get the parents on their side..so that anything inappropriate or problematic will be ignored and regarded as just another manipulation on their part ,understandable that the parents would so easily buy into it ,considering that 9 times out of ten they are the ones who drove their 13 year old to the bottle..or other drugs..in the first place..I fully agree that substance abuse is a disease..yet these kids who are sick are treated by someone who has no business play acting as an actual professional ,she cannot be objective..or unbiased having been there herself ..and the way she allows these kids to one moment be bawling someone out , and the next moment expecting the kid who everyone is snarling at to confide in them their most personal feelings ? I DON'T THINK SO..if they had spoken to me that way I wouldn't be open to telling them anything about myself..ask me if I'd be dumb enough to sit in a chair surrounded by all these other people all of whom are out to get me? Placing a new and particularly vulnerable patient in the position where he is surrounded on all sides like that..see that is why the war on drugs was b.s. the government wouldn't shell out the funds to provide quality long term care and treatment ,they just wanted to first get people addicted to it by allowing it into the country..then punishing and locking up those not lucky ? Enough to get what was probably regarded as quality care..i don't consider treatment that basically boils down to the doctor stepping aside and having former addicts "treat"other addicts..and everyone bought right into it..and the often unrecognized mental problems and or disorders such as autism and aspergers syndrome..are THEY treated by little miss prim look at me managed to get through this stupid and negligent form of treatment ..so now I get to pretend that I know how to treat you as though i actually have something to show other than 5 years of sobriety..its no wonder that so many die rather than go back to places like this..and it's very sad.❤
You are so right! So many things aren't as they should be at all. There should also be as much anti-drug education pumped into kids as there is about recycling and social issues. They don't make movies like this anymore, or do Public Service Announcements as they used to.
It’s terrible!!! The one thing I like about these old shows, even though the acting stinks, is I like seeing young people not all tattooed up. Dressed in sleezy tight trashy clothes. The kids of those days may not have been better in real life, but they looked cleaner at least.
People already understood certain attitudes against people were unacceptable. They didnt need as much reminding, and didnt insist on being stubborn and arguing abaout the hill they need to die on as much. Diversity is being modeled here with a black and mexican patient, as well as one with a learning disability, an eating disorder, incest/molestation background, and all with substance abuse problems. Just as times and programs ALWAYS HAVE. There is no new agenda. Only those that want to excuse and try to normalize their shitty attitudes by insulting and putting down decency & common courtesy.
Roo-feee-oooohh!!!! Had to say that. This is way too funny. Tatum O'Neil is not a good actor. This script is awful. It's literally one cliche after another. And yes, we know that at least 3 of these actors were very actively using any and every substance
These kinds of "treatment centers" ruined a whole generation and completely alienated us from parents that held us responsible for their happiness. A horrible time togrow up
The irony of it all. Corey, Drew, and Tatum were all on drugs at the time of filming.
Probably why it was actually one of the better ones of these, they knew firsthand!
Well, this After School special was done a short time after Drew was release from her rehab. Ironically this was filmed in the same ASAP rehab hospital that Drew was in. This was from Drew's autobiography she wrote of her life.

"He has been arrested for cocaine possession, he can never practice law or run for public office". Sounds like he'll fit in perfectly to me!!
Finally found something with Feldman and he's NOT dressed like Michael Jackson
Now that you say it, you have a point! I'm glad I could help give you some fresh air to breathe.
Lol😂
Ascension Millennium! 😂
No but he is wearing one of the same weird shirts he wore in dream a little dream
LoL!! Yes!
the irony of drew and corey at this age
Corey, Drew, & Tatum all 3 had substance abuse issues. They were cast for a reason.
Wonder if they were on substances then..so sad..
Wow this is Great seeing Them
Our girl Drew!
Corey Feldman is wearing the outfits from Dream a Little Dream😂
Wish more programs were on like this

The show wrapped and they all drank happily all the way to the bank.

Yes, the little cutie became one of the first poster children for troubled famous people. Showed us all how horrible fame can be.
Thanks for uploading this I've been wanting to see this for a long time 🙂
You are very welcome! It's a classic.
These after school specials teach young teenager good lessons. Say no to illegal drugs they are bad for you and you can die taking illegal drugs.

Makes me sick.
Is this something she talked about?
I can't believe I watched the whooole thing.
I put it on as a joke didn't think I'd make it 5 minutes but watch the whole thing. Now I want to just say no lol

They all were on drugs for real.
Drew didnt get clean until yrs after this same with corey. tatum is still doing drugs at 57.
Drew had already been to rehab and written her 'Little Girl Lost' book at this point. She made this to encourage kids to 'Just say No'.
Corey Feldman on the other hand...
Being trapped in an incestuous relationship can cause a lifetime of drug abuse .
