- The alarming problem of adolescent suicide is the basis for this compassionate drama. Two boys develop a close relationship with their parents. Their mutual unhappiness only heightens their feeling of despair and when a suicide pact results in the death of one boy, a tragic moment of truth confronts all concerned.

I’ve had 2 members of my family take their own lives. It is nothing to be glamorized . The pain they must have been going through in silence they suffered. We must not let mental illness be stigmatized any longer. Enough is enough!
Soo sorry for your losses😰
👍🏻
Two sisters, a best friend, a favourite uncle, a damaged cousin…. all suicided. So much damage. 4:14 4:16
My sister who doesn’t live in the same state as me has stigma against me because of my mental health; Major Depression, Anxiety and Borderline Personality Disorder. She said she loves me from a far? I’m not normal? And she doesn’t owe me anything? I don’t know how she can be so cruel, selfish and mean? It’s all bs and abuse. I said it’s unwarranted and I don’t deserve that. Nothing I say matters to her. She’ll never change and she’s missing out on being my sister and close to me and having a good relationship with me her sister. She judges me, belittles and insults me and I don’t have the energy and just want peace and not waste my time on her. Myself, my husband and our 3 cats are my priorities, not her.

This short was written very well. The boy who appeared to have everything was missing the most important thing and that was someone who cared. His parents ignored all the signs, even when they were staring them right in the face.
I just wish they hadn't written in the part about his brother. There is still a misconception today that people need a reason to be depressed. The reality is that it can happen to anyone
This is a hard subject and my condolences to those who have been affected by it. Along with Out of Step, these is one of my favorites. We really need to listen to one another. I know someone who took his life and I didn't know he was suffering. My heart goes out to his family.
As a suicide survivor.people need to wake the F up and just listen and not judge what you don't understand.if you have a broken arm how fast the doctors are to fix it.But God forbid you tell someone you have a mental illness they tell you get over it,take a pill ,pray to God, Tom will be better.

My youngest son who is 28 years old came to me About 6 plus months ago & told me that he was feeling the same way as these 2 you young kids were feeling he said that he tried to talk to his wife about how he’s has been feeling he said that she called him a pu..sy & she wanted a divorce this sent my son over the edge they had a 3 year old daughter his wife told him that she doesn’t want to be a mother anymore or a wife so as of now my son & my granddaughter has been living with me for 6 or so many months now it has been so hard on me with my son crying in my arms saying that he doesn’t want to live anymore it got to the point that I was afraid to go to sleep for days at a time but thankfully he got the help that he needed sometimes he still cries because he doesn’t understand why his wife would turn hir back on him but especially their daughter so from 1 parents to another 1 please pay attention to what your child is going through if you think that they need help or even if you think they don’t then found them help please because 1day it might be to late ty for listening to my story
My son is still devastated about his father's suicide 😢
I always loved After School Specials in my youth.
I miss these days
@@tarap9924 I loved these Afterschool Specials, and I was already grown when they aired. (Don't figure out my age. LOLOLOL) .
praying for a those who suffer from depression..and mental illness..as an adult still fight against it, and not let it overcome...
This was really good, thanks. I love these 70s and 80s afterschool special types so much.
So do I
So do i
During the 1970's and 1980's they also had night time movies of the week on ABC Channel 7. I think it was every Monday night at 8 p.m in Los Angeles.
These were movies that were for TV and not movies that were ever at movie theaters. I used to watch these every Monday night from
8 p.m. to 10 p.m. A lot of great made for TV movies!
I turned 50 recently and still love this stuff. The 70s and 80s are my favorite for TV.
So sad how the teacher saw his pain more than the parents!
I know, right?. She apparently knew him better than his own parents did.
@@robinwagner3293 exactly! The were so focused on wanting him to follow in his brother's footsteps that they weren't allowing much room for David to make his own decisions about what he wanted to do with his life.
I want to just slap both of his parents to reality. Snobs!
My friend Lee acts in this! Im so glad you posted it!
How cool! Lee has always been one of my favorite actors! I hope he is happy and well. 😸
One of my favourite actors!
Been watching everything I can find with him in it. Some is hard to find.
Big fan. It's a shame he quit acting.
Shadows Pond How blessed are you to know Lee Harcourt Montgomery. If my memory serves me, he also starred in the sequel to 'Williard'--'Ben', and his siter is Belinda J. Montgomery, right?
Riigghhttt.

“ first you have to tell me whose life plan I’m supposed to be living”
Elinor Donahue had the BEST career of the child actors who appeared on 'Father Knows Best'.
She is always excellent. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch this, but as soon as I saw her name in the credits, I decided to view the program.
Now that you mention it her voice sounds familiar… Thank you for saying who she is.
The curve ball happens in real life. Sometimes the "person with everything to live for" is the one who kills themselves".
Because people just see and admire the outside and not what is actually going on.
@@teijaflink2226 , precisely.
The warning signs were there. The parents, too self-absorbed, or lacked the knowledge-didn’t recognize it.
I grew up on these after school specials you can truly relate ❤
Horrible the way the parents just didn’t even listen to the teacher. She really tried to help them.
And why were they mad at their son's friend in the end?
Yes, and people think it was David who was selfish for killing himself when it was his parents who were selfish for forcing him to be the second attempt at their expectations for their first child. And manipulating him into believing he killed the first child is disgusting. David’s parents were extremely manipulative and resolutely oblivious to him. Often when a teen attempts or dies by suicide, there are a lot of selfish or inattentive adults in the picture. Even when the adults are paying attention and doing their best, the teen is sick. Sometimes mental illness cannot be understood or managed. This process is complicated and ongoing. And yes, I AM a licensed mental health professional.
Both protagonists had suicidal thoughts because of a (step)sibling and (step)sibling rivalry. Both thought that they could not match up to their respective (step)brother and craved for their parent(s) in question to love them for who they were.
@@andrewcolinwilson1 probably thought he encouraged him to do it
@@KQuinn672 I'm sure they didn't mean what they said when they saw him at their son's funeral.
Bibi Besch played an unemotional non-maternal mother about ten years later in “Doing Time on Maple Drive.” She’s 42 in 1984 and looks and sounds late 50’s.
Suicide is not sick or selfish!!! Hate people that think that way! That is just ignorance.....sucidal people are in extreme pain and want to end it and there is nothing selfish about wanting to end one's pain....it's selfish for suicidal people to live because folks want them too....that lady makes me mad-just another ignorant person not knowing that young man's pain!
Well said!
this is selfishness, because people who loved a suicide will experience excruciating pain for the rest of their lives. Suicide is not an option or a solution to problems. often a difficult period passes and better times come. Or a person comes to a vivid realization of how he can become happy and it is not so difficult.
@@jus5240 Another complete stranger with a totaly ignorant comment knowing NOTHING about a sucidal person living with already excrusiating pain.!!!..it's the person living in extreme pain who experiences suffering that does not commit suicide that is cruel!! Suicide IS the solution to excrusiating pain...and some problems ARE permanent and will end with suicide...the problem is many suicidal people dont end their lives because the physical pain of going through with it is just so great it scares them to go through with it. It is SELFISH for others to want a sucicidal person to live in excrusiating pain just to make them happy.
@@jus5240 But depression robs the person of all *choice* and reason, it's not their fault.
@jus5240 What if better times never come? What if they're constantly in physical pain and they can't take it anymore? What if they are feeling unloved or unwanted and alone? The living will continue to live. Those that don't want to continue to live should not feel forced to go on out of guilt.
This is a million times better than 13 Reasons Why. Bravo!
I sometimes wonder what made the guy who did not die change his mind at the last minute
Oh, I haven't seen this movie in years. Thanks for posting it. It shows that people become uncomfortable if others express their feelings, and they become uncomfortable when they do not. Talking to someone who could really help-- a professional--when someone is depressed and considering suicide is always a good thing. I think that Craig's family had it right when they told him. "I love you and I'm here."
This was so sad. The speech at the end was so riveting. Thank you for sharing this. I hope it might save some lives. So many ignore the signs that someone may be thinking about taking their own life. We need to pay attention and get them the help they need. God Bless You & stay safe.
I think as cheesy as these were they were good for starting a conversation with your children and maybe made it a little easier for them to broach a conversation with their parents especially if the kids didn’t know how to start a tough /uncomfortable conversation those of us who grew up in the 80’s grew up with a lot of parents who were perfectly happy to shelve the tough topics 😢😢💔
The lady who played Lee Montgomery's mother in this was the real-life mother of actress Samantha Mathis. This is such a sad story. It reminds us to pay attention to the warning signs that someone is contemplating suicide. This tragedy could have been prevented. David's parents should not have wanted David to do everything they wanted his deceased brother to do. His girlfriend wasn't very understanding, either. Sadly, no one really got that he needed someone to talk to. If they had gotten it, the tragedy could have been prevented.
No "tragedy", it's a MOVIE.
@@llamalady8700 sadly, it isn't just a movie. Suicide is a tragedy. This tragedy happens all too often in real life, too.
Thanks for sharing! Never seen this one B4 😊
The actor who played the kid who killed himself is the same actor who played Elliot’s older brother in E.T. the Extraterrestrial.
That was the other guy. The "nerd" with the glasses. The one who chickened out.
I didn’t know that.
Thanks for posting!
My Best Friend committed suicide when I was 16, and she was 18; My stupid phone stopped working, and I see where she called me, and I didn't hear from her, and told my use to be childhood Best Friend, and she told me she **'d on Ibuprofen, and OMG, I lost it, I screamed, hollared, and blamed myself; My Nurse Practitioner told me I wasn't my fault, and I shouldn't beat myself up about it, and etc, and I was a good friend, she was sick, and needed help. Yeah, his parents disgust me for not listening, and how his parents talk to him now I see why he didn't want to be around...UGH... ANNOYING...
Thank you for sharing this film.
Thanks for uploading.
David looks like the 80’s actor Joey Lawrence a little bit.
thank you
This is from 1984, not 1988.
Great movie, but your copy is missing important scenes. When David gives away his prized possessions and his letter jacket to his coach.
That’s stupid to delete such and important scene. That is usually one of the first signs that someone is planning to commit suicide.
Does anyone know where we can find it? I'd like to see it.
@@abinashmishra329 Why don't you be grateful for the free content here? It's not tainlor's fault that those scenes were accidentally erased from the 30-year old tape. You should think about not being so entitled.
It is also missing the final car ride itself where the surviving guy jumps out--the most important scene in the episode.

You should think about looking up the definition of "entitled".
I recognized Lee Montgomery before I even pushed on the video. I always liked him in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with Sarah Jessica Parker and Shannen Doherty
This was very powerful and very well done.
Carmen Zapata always gives great performances.
my mom is also named Carmen Zapata .she was born Carmen Zapata.and yes had to watch for Carmen Zapata

He'd be about 22 or 23 at the time of making it.
This was a good movie. Good acting too.
Good movie! I dont know how i missed it. I used to watch all the after scool specials.
The guy who played David kinda reminds me of Joey Lawrence yet he was probably working on Gimme a Break when this after school special came out at the time.
I had a cousin, she took away her owon life at 27 years old. And my sister said twice she was going to kill herself, because she had a broken heart. Wirde she does have those suicidal toughts. It is sad.
I think this version is truncated. They used to show the recorded CBS broadcast version which was at least 45 minutes
Agreed. I can't find the full version anywhere. Have you had any luck?
One of the reasons why I prefer looking at stuff from the early 2000s and before is that the producers weren't so afraid of offending people for silly reasons, like the mother (a female) being clueless (which ironically people see today as sexist although they do that to men all the time). Therefore they not only had much more creative freedom, but more often the best writers/producers were chosen without their "morality" being taken into account.
It's interesting this episode pops up as the news of singer Sinead O'Connor came out this week .the disrespectful disgusting heartless comments 😔, I actually unfollowed someone on tik tok because he made some very rude comments about someone that succomed to suicide .
Parents are Soo blind! Craig...with reason..is jealous! His father has no time for him but enough for the other! Movie or real life of Arents need to wake up! See the signs!
Claudia Wells' hair is glorious.
Traggic story about a very prominent problem existing in our society today. Suicide is one of the leading causes of teenage deaths currently!
The guy who killed himself is the guy who was one of Michael J. Fox's womanizing friends Justine Bateman left a party with in the 2nd episode of Family Ties and his dad is the guy who tried to seduce Justine Bateman in the 6th episode of Family Ties.
He also played a suicidal character on the tv series Fame. (s2,e21)
The girlfriend of the guy who killed himself played Michael J. Fox’s girlfriend in the first Back to the Future movie.
Interestingly enough, like MJF, he is also Canadian.
Six degrees of Lee Montgomery. 😁
I didn’t even know that.
the special is from 1984, not 1988
Omg this episode always left
Me traumatized scared me love lee

very good movie what most teens do not realize that they are hurting more than themselves they HURT OTHERS
They hurt their friends, families, committing suicide is very selfish and leads to Hell, nothing but the Devil telling them to commit suicide. Call the suicide prevention hotline. If you know someone who is suicidal and tells you not to tell or Lose a friend, tell anyway, call suicide prevention hotline, call the police. Tell your friend's parents. If your friend gets angry at you for telling others he or she is about to commit suicide, let your friend get angry at you, Better to lose a friendship than to lose friend.
@@nataliegillmore7436 Suicide does NOT lead to hell!!!! Some people still alive are living in extreme pain with some problem and that is HELL--a state of extreme agony and torment is hell....commiting suicide will end the pain and bring the person to heaven...I go to church and I know better that HELL is not a place of fire and screaming.......the bible description of hell is made up!!! Extreme fire can be the same as extreme pain from a disability!

I use to watch all this series why cn’t they bring serious series with different true cases. So these teenagers can see what r the outcome of it positive or negative.
I've actually been working on a story that deals with the topic of teenage suicide for a few years. The story is told from a Christian perspective. It is about a Christian family that becomes dysfunctional when their parents begin to neglect their eighteen-year-old son and eleven-year-old daughter. The teenager dotes on his younger sister and assumes many of the parental responsibilities, but he is dealing with personal problems. After he and his manipulative girlfriend break up, his academic performance and his performance on his school's track team begin to suffer. This angers his parents, because he is on his way to going to Princeton on a track scholarship. The young man is praying every night that Jesus Christ will take his soul while he sleeps, but when this doesn't happen, he decides that he wants to take matters into his own hands by killing himself! With the help of the love of Jesus Christ and the love of his little sister, however, he decides he wants to live.
I love the way that they put Miami Vice music behind it

I hate emotional neglect. Someone not taken seriously. Suicides do NOt go to Heaven cause you died not trusting God. Sometimes we go through hard times for a reason.
Just because somebody commits suicide does not mean they don't go to heaven . Doesn't mean they don't trust in God it just means they're overwhelmed with the pain. If somebody knows Jesus Christ as their lord and savior but they have a moment of weakness or mental health problem and commit suicide go go to heaven

Really inappropriate to allow the fraternizing in the classroom. At least he was brought to task about smoking the marijuana. Yet, instead of being thankful for what he had, the golden boy was bent on rebelling and selfishly going his own way, while using his brother's death as an excuse. Yes, his parents might not have been perfect, yet they were not to blame for the choices that caused their son's demise.
