  • “The axe of the Gospel must now be laid at the roots of the barren tree and the tree must be delivered to the flames with its unfruitful leaves, so that he who has never learned to speak might learn at length to hold his tongue.”
Despite little training in eloquence or theology, Helvidius had gained some notoriety as an opponent of monasticism and of virginity as a way of life. This led Helvidius also to deny the perpetual virginity of Mary. Helvidius’ book on the subject became a major source of scandal in Rome. And this St. Jerome could not abide.
In his response, Jerome maintains three propositions against Helvidius: that Joseph was considered the husband of Mary as he was considered the father of Jesus, more by repute than by biological fact; that the “brethren” of the Lord referenced in the Gospels were Jesus’ cousins, not his brothers; and that virginity is indeed a higher state in life than the married state.

A REAL CHRISTIAN WILL NEVER IGNORE CLEAR CUT VERSES
✝ Jesus said, why do you call me good ? ” No one is good except God alone
( 📖 LUKE 18 : 19 ) ➜ Jesus proved he is NOT god by saying do NOT call me GOOD
✝ No one can see God ( 📖 JOHN 5 : 37 ) ➜ This proves Jesus is NOT God, because the people have seen Jesus
✝ The bible makes it very clear, God is NOT human ( 📖 NUMBERS 23 : 19 ) ➜ How then can Jesus be GOD and HUMAN
✝ God does NOT die ( 📖 ISAIAH 40 : 28 - 29 ) ➜ According to Christianity Jesus died and this proves Jesus is NOT God
✝ Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ( 📖 MATTHEW 27 : 46 ) If Jesus was on a mission to die for our sins ➜ WHY was he begging God to save him

Wow. Seeing St.Jerome at work, he was a very talented and skilled scholar on top of obviously being a Saint, Church Father, and Doctor of the Church.
    Glory be to God!
    St.Jerome, pray for us. Amen!

People say he was too hard on the critics of his time, too fiery, but the enemies of the Church are no less active in our current times... and they need no less a correction to their misapprehensions and presumptions now as well.
    St Jerome, pray for us

Do we have any writings against St. Jerome on this point who would be other wise considered orthodox? The typical Protestant response when you bring up things like St Jerome’s defense of the perpetual virginity is that there were many theological options during the early church and just because a church father taught something doesn’t mean it’s true. While there is a tinge of truth, rather than checking Christian beliefs with the consensus of the fathers they use that argument to swat away any mention of the early church in an argument.

I asked Mike Aquilina. "Tertullian - if you consider him otherwise orthodox. He had other problems."
