    This experiment is specific to a slippery indoor track with electric go karts. In majority cases you should follow the WIDE line!

      Phew! that's a relief. I'd thought the wider line means less steering, higher minimum corner speed.
      I guess what we do learn from this is to try a variety of lines and find where the grip, and the lap time are (I'm not sure I'd actually know ;-))

      Do you think that's the same thing in skippery track but with classic motor go karts ?

    I was using the wide to narrow turn by the textbook technique and ended up wasting miliseconds. it's so frustrating because I thought my racing line were perfect. Then this video explained it perfectly because I race in the exact same track condition: electric gokart, indoors, rubber slippery flooring.
    Thanks!

    I always take the narrow line, staying to the inside of the corner unless I have to pass another kart that’s on the inside. And my local indoor kart track is very tight in width, barely room for two karts side by side. But this frequent contact, accidental or not, makes it even more fun

    i would say it depends as wide on some turns allows late braking (faster entrance speed), which also leads to late apex and position the kart towards the side of the track which you just apexed. Since karting is an average of speeds and setting yourself up optimally for the next turn, .....it depends. Overtaking with Late apex seems to be more common with the tracks I go to, as new people just hug the inside and does not allow their kart to accelerate at its fullest since they turn so much.

    Another interesting video! One thing I have noticed on tracks especially indoor or narrow tracks are people who basically go in super hot brake very late and lock up (almost as if they are trying to drift) but still seem faster than traditional driving. Personally I have seen this weird strategy fail only on wide high speed corners but with indoor tracks, they are all basically tight and narrow.

  • @CaptainAwesomeness
    @CaptainAwesomeness Před rokem +6

    Just like everything else in life, the real answer is that it depends. Just as you mentioned about surface track conditions which includes when it was last resurfaced, you adjust your line according to what you can get away with.
    I adapt my line not only to what the track feels like but also what the kart wants to do. So in short, your question is rather difficult to answer when looking at the big picture of the ridiculous amount of variables that affect lap times. In the context of where you raced in this video though, obviously narrow line will work best.

    Thanks for the tips brother you should be able to race with Lando in karting.

  • @ExSheriffFattyBoySkinnyArms

    Interesting, I never would have “thunk” a narrow line would be faster. Yet it make sense in part because you’re travelling a shorter distance overall

  • @DrR1pper
    @DrR1pper Před rokem +2

    Lap time is a function of only 2 variables. Distance travelled around a lap and average lap speed. They are somewhat inter-related in that (e.g.) you do not want to focus on just trying to get the highest average speed as that will occur with the maximum distance travelled (i.e. geometric line). Intuitively you know this is not going to be the fastest way around the track as the highest average speed does not compensate for the additional distance of travel needed to achieve it. Find the optimal value for both and you will have your fastest lap time possible.

  • @samuelrasool4116
    @samuelrasool4116 Před rokem +1

    I'm intrigued to do some experiments with this. I have a theory that tighter is faster if there's not a long straight on exit. You literally cut the distance in half. Alot of the time, turning the steering flat lines the rpm, so if you are going through a corner where you won't bog down from going tighter rather than flat line, that's probably the line to take. That's just my opinion tho

  • @oceano844
    @oceano844 Před rokem +13

    could it be different with combustion karts? they tend to have low acceleration speeds so you want to keep a high speed in corners in ordner to avoid accelerating from almost 0

    • @kartingtips
      @kartingtips  Před rokem +11

      Great question! You need to take a wide line with petrol karts or else you'll lose the revs and hence lose time on exit.

      @@kartingtips so taking a narrow line on a electric kart is better?

  • @suinegon
    @suinegon Před rokem

    I always take the narrowest line because I'm too heavy (130kg) and I try avoid to do too much meters, I decide how I feel the exit of the corner. I try to follow the narrowest line were I can go trough the apex and exit at the maxium speed. Also y try to make as much straight lines as possible, sometimes, touching the barriers a little bit o going into the kerbs, If you turn is like you're braking, trying to go straight as much as possible is the best solution to mantain/increse your speed

  • @SchlauerTyp
    @SchlauerTyp Před rokem

    When I am able to use the speed at the exit, I drive a wide line but when there follows an other tight corner, I go the narrow line.

    Hi KTips, I went Go Karting yesterday. Motor karts on a outside track. I raced adults and won (I am not an adult). At one point I was spun out because I could not see who is behind me. Can you tell us some tips on how to avoid these kinds of crashes and spins please? Thank you. Great video as well.

    you might even lose some positions too when you do the wide lap cause you might give your opponents lots of room to pass you

    man, i just got into go karting, and i saw some videos about racing lines, and im just very confused now. Basically, every single video on that lead me to the conclusion that taking corners wide is simply better because it allows you to take much more speed into the corner, you have to steer and break less, and it gives you a better exit since you can accelerate earlier. Now i see this video, and it just refuted all of what i thought to know about that hahaha. Well now i dont know what to think. Ig ill try both next time im at my local indoor track :)
    EDIT: very nice video btw, i think i could learn some thing here

      Great question! This experiment is specific to this track layout and electric karts. If you are driving petrol karts, stick with the wide line or else you'll lose the revs and exit speed.

    At my local kart facility I mostly take an outside line. But our outside line doesn't use all of the track because it's incredibly slippery on the outer edges of the track. But I have 1 corner where I take a middle to inner line. I firmly believe in that particular corner, my line is the fast line.

  • @samiefrank
    @samiefrank Před rokem

    you know, at my local track, in Bratislava, it matters on the corner - first 2 corners are hairpins, the first one being tighter, you can't do a lot there. but then, turn 3, might save you some time if you actually take the narrower line as you lose meters by taking a wider one and the surface and the tyres still slow you down.
    (EDIT: it's an indoor track, but there's an outdoor too which I haven't been to yet, the place is called MAX 60)
