  • In this video, I go over my thoughts on the Panasonic Lumix S5 and how it stacks up against my 8-year-old GH3. With such a powerful cinematic camera, will it become my new camera for filmmaking?

      Nigel, try the XT-4 bro! Sweet spot between FF and MFT with very small lenses and better AF than any Panasonic camera. Cheaper than S5 but does everything 10 bit from 4k60 to 1080p240. Cheap lenses like the XC 35f2 or Viltrox 23 f1.4.

    I think the S5 is still a budget option so keeping and using it wouldn’t change your unique voice. I won’t swap my GH5 for it but if I still had the G80, this would make a lot of sense. Probably with vintage lenses and a third party zoom you can keep the cost in the reasonable zone :)

    I know this is an old video, but I just saw it and so... I am with you, Yo. I just got an S5 after living with a Sony a6400 APS-C camera for the last few years, which I love, but the S5 is another level, BUT... I'm still keeping my a6400 for a few reasons. It's now staying on my gimbal because of the reliable autofocus, although I find the S5 autofocus pretty good, but it ain't Sony autofocus, but I'm really into anamorphic, and the S5 just has so much more to grow inside of, and so, I'm keeping both. I also have some great vintage lenses for the S5, along with the 20-60 and the 50mm f/1.8. I think I'm gonna get either the Panasonic 24mm f/1.8 for the S5, or the 16-35, and then, along with my vintage lenses and a couple of anamorphic lenses, and I can be done, but like you said, that's gonna take some time, and so for now, it's the S5 with two native lenses, plus my vintage lenses, and my trusty a6400 for autofocus and for when I just want a really light setup to run around with, although the S5 is certainly not too heavy, for sure. All of these cameras are amazing, it's really just a matter of what you need for what you do, and for a specific project as well. Great video, thanks for sharing. Keep making art!!

    A tip to consider... buy full frame capable lenses (prime & zoom) that are Canon EF mount, or can easily / cheaply be adapted to Canon EF - then convert S5 body to EF mount with a not super expensive adapter ($150 with electronic communication). I’ve done this with GH5 using a $50 EF to M43 adapter for several years, and now with S5. This way my one kit of good EF lenses can be used on either cam body, not limited to being only M43 or L cam mount. Has worked great for me to get nice vintage & modern era lenses that were WAY more affordable buying used than new dedicated mount glass (or having to buy redundant focal lengths)! 😃

      @@castielvargastv7931 If you are shooting standard picture profiles and not doing a lot of colour grading - you won't notice any difference, likely. I did a comparison on my own channel about 8-bit to 10 bit in standard profile - the comparison is at the 5:15 mark on the first video on my page talking about the Sony A7C. I would put up a link, but CZcams would block this comment if I did.
      You will see a huge difference if you're shooting in Vlog or HLG like I do these days. When you shoot in these profiles, that extra colour information is essential (especially in Vlog). I like to shoot vlog and apply a LeemingLut for correction and without 10-bit, I could not do that.

    Been looking into the s5 lately. I have to say in terms of price it seems you get a lot more out of your lenses on the s5. Especially in terms of bokeh. Ya the m43 lenses are smaller but if you get into the vintage. Man. The s5 just makes a lot of sense. But you do get a lot of camera with things like the gh5 gh5s

    i wish Panasonic had sent you the f2.8 24-70 and 70-200 pro lenses - that is wher ethe magic happens my friend. That 20-60 kit lens gives you full frame lite or GH5 and a half. Its the synergy between the pro lenses and the s5 that really makes this combo sing. (based on my 3 months working with my S5 lens combo) - at the end of the day you can still tell a great story with the GH5 though.

      For sure, the sigma 28-70 2.8 that was just released I think will be the lens to get, hopefully I’ll get my hands on it soon! But I still like the compact size and performance of the micro 4/3 system

    For filmmaking, we just can't do full frame. It looks cheap. I'm sure the camera's fine, but the flexibility of m43 can't be beat... yet. I'd suggest going to the gh4 instead. You get 10bit, 4k, 96fps and it has no stabilisation. No downsides. Even so, that gh3 is still a fantastic camera that i'd be more than happy to work with.

  • @rodvisionfilms
    @rodvisionfilms Před 3 lety

    You talk about the 4k, color depth but when you mention the 120fps in 1080p nor in any other modes, you don't talk about the bitrate which makes an important difference at the end when it comes to image sharpness/details you were referring to. 120fps and above with such high compression somehow compromises the image quality at this stage... just like A7III shoots 1080p @120fps at 100Mbps, Panasonic should have done the same with the S5. Even though I'm keeping it and retired my good and old Gh4.

    @shanemitchellspencer Před 3 lety +4

    Not as big of a difference as you would expect. I'm not sure what the conclusion I should draw from that is - either Full Frame as largely over hyped or Panasonic just makes dank ass M43 cameras.
    Truth be told I've always enjoyed your videos for not focusing on the latest and greatest camera tech and getting by with technique and cheaper alternatives. You can drown in the high-tech, high budget recommendations from other vids.

      When nigel switches to the GH3, it's a drastically worse look, so much color artifacts and smeared details on his face,even visible through CZcams compression.

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 Před 3 lety

      Not a big difference because Nigel shot at 1080p. As he said, if you compare the GH3 and the S5 at maximum resolution and bit rate, there is no comparison. I understand his point about sticking with the lens format you have, but if you shot the S5 with some well chosen manual lenses, full frame makes technical and financial sense.
