    Setting up your camera before you shoot is one of the most important factors to getting the results you're after.
    In this video, I break down all of the different tools and settings I use inside the Panasonic S5 for recording video internally.
    If you're looking to shoot the best quality video on the Panasonic S5, then I really do hope that this video helps you to get everything where it needs to be.
    The Panasonic S5 and other Lumix S-Series cameras are absolutely incredible for video production, and when they're used correctly they can give you results that are far beyond their price-point.
    As always, thank you so much for watching this video and if you're a fellow Lumix S5 user and this helps you then please let me know in the comments!
    Thanks!

    This was a fantastic video that was extremely easy to follow and will definitely give me some great starting points for my own video adventure with my camera. So thank you very much for taking the time to explain this in a way people new to the platform can understand. I came from the GH3 and the GH2 but I decided to upgrade and I really think your videos have been extremely helpful.

    Such a great, helpful video. I just got an s5, and this got me to everything I need to be able to get back to work using this along with my other camera, and then just learn on the fly about the deeper parts of this camera, but for now, I have all my custom buttons hooked up for my basic settings, and I'm off and running. And I tested the autofocus and it's surprisingly good! I come from a Sony a6400, and this didn't disappoint me at all, at least in the way I work. In manual focus mode, when you grab focus with the "a/f on" button, it locks in so fast and then you can shoot in manual mode. It's perfect for that kind of shooting, and as far as the continuous af, it's definitely not quite as "locked in" as my Sony, but I haven't messed with the settings yet, but it actually works pretty well using your settings. The truth is, other than talking head stuff, there is no camera on earth that is truly reliable with continuous autofocus, tracking autofocus, etc. All cameras hunt now and then, and for professional work, nobody is always relying on autofocus. But for talking head stuff, as long as you're well lit, this feels pretty great so far. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing, much appreciated. Oh, and the 10 bit, 422 4k files play really well in Davinci Resolve. At least on my machine. That was a relief as well. Thanks!

    I do a lot of live action real world military videos/photos and I'm working on an equipment list for my unit. I've been using my personal A7III, but I'm considering presenting the S5 as an option and your videos have made it very compelling. Good auto focus/tracking is very important in my work so I'm researching to see if the S5 can do it. I used to focus manually all the time but there are no second takes when I'm in the field.

    • @DrewCreal
      @DrewCreal Před 2 lety

      @@kevhuynh I have a small CZcams channel and the S5 looks great but in terms of ease of use and for filming oneself, my Sony ZV-1 smashes...only problem is that it only records in 5 min increments at 4K 30fps, the S5 can do 20 minutes...or longer I think. Im starting to feel like the S5 was made for an actual camera operator, and not a content creator that films himself. That said, I haven't invested a ton of time into learning all the details of the camera. But to directly answer your question AUTOFOCUS!!!

    Cheers!

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for watching, Kai! Always try to keep my videos straight to the point 👍🏼
      So in terms of a noticeable difference, you shouldn’t see “too much” difference to the naked eye, however when you got to edit an MP4 file it won’t be anywhere near as robust as the MOV files due to the lower write rates.
      4K 10bit MP4 files at 100mb/s will still perform way better than any a lot of the other brands out there since it’s still a 10bit colour format and 100mb/s is respectable. However, the 150/200mb options in MOV will definitely give you the most flexibility.
      Hope this helps!

    Hey dude, thanks for all your help with the S5. You literally won’t believe it I’ve had to return my replacement S5 because it too is faulty!. This time there is a dead pixel in the sensor that I didn’t notice!. Sensor is clean as it’s brand new so def isn’t dust. So yea two out of two Panasonic cameras with sensor defects!. I’m definitely staying subbed to your channel but I’m going to wait now for the Sony A7IV!. Don’t think I’ll ever buy another Panasonic camera again!. I mean I’ve had my old Nikon D5000 for 12years and my Sony RX100va for 18months and both have been flawless!. Get a Panasonic and both are effectively broken!.. like literally can’t believe it 🤦‍♂️

      @@JoshCameron hey Josh. I know it’s just bizzare I have a theory, just a theory. That being possibly Amazon UK where I purchased it received in refurbished or seconds stock (like clothes sold in outlet stores) reduced in price due to defects!. It’s just odd that they could sell the camera for practically 50% off just over £1000 for a camera that’s usually and at the moment from Amazon is £1999!. It just makes me wonder because he’s receiving two defective cameras in a row is so unlikely and from a Japanese company like Panasonic! My other theory is due to the pandemic did quality controls slip at the factories in China due to increased demand etc!. All theories but I wouldn’t be surprised if an entire production batch is faulty!.
      Tbh if I see the S5 for a great price again I’d be willing to give it one last chance. Because the limited experience I had was fantastic, I found the auto focus to be flawless apart from in say a badly light room!. But yes it’s a shame. I’m anticipating the Sony A7IV being ridiculous expensive like £3000 with a kit lens. I think all these channels predictions the camera with lens to be £2000 is in for a bad surprise!.

    Hey Josh! I have an S5 and I'm quite liking it. But I have to say that I absolutely hate the slo mo in it. The bit rate is so low that the 1080p modes look like 720p that's been upscaled. The visuals all end up looking really muddy.
    4k 60 is a tad bit better but it is a real shame that anything above 60 is virtually unusable in a professional setting.
    Any idea if this is something that can be fixed with a firmware update in the future? Is there anyway to contact panasonic to find out?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Joel, I get what you’re saying here. The S&Q function isn’t something I use very often but I can definitely tell the difference in quality when I do use it.
      My advice for now would be only to use it when you can give a decent amount of light to the subject you’re filming. Normally you can make a lower birthdate/ lower res image look 10 times better with good light.
      Hopefully with firmware they might bump up the codecs a bit to beef out the high frame rate options, but that’s something we’ll have to wait for I guess to see if that ever happens!

    • @castielvargastv7931
      @castielvargastv7931 Před 2 lety +1

      If you want professional bit rates buy the s1h or the gh5. The s5 is more like a g9 than gh or sh. S5 has half the bit rate options a gh5 has , of course you can see a difference if you really want. Normal viewers will never see it. Most cameras you can buy at this price point dont even reach the s5 specs so i guess you really ask for too much from such a cheap camera.

    I‘m wondering if shooting V-Log is really that much of more work in post compared to Cinelike-D. Since you have to touch both I guess in the end it‘s neglectable if using a conversation LUT 🤔

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  Před 2 lety

      To be honest, the difference in workload is minimal. However, you can always spend a lot longer tweaking log footage so I guess it gives you that option !

    • @HGQjazz
      @HGQjazz Před 2 lety

      True, If I am going to use a LUT, I might as well be in VLOG. I think I will eventually adjust (add contrast & saturation) CineD and just start taking it straight out of camera.

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 Před 2 lety

      If your workflow for Cinelike D includes a conversion LUT, then v-log isn't any more work, really. I do the standard practice of applying REC709 conversion LUT, then tweak for correction, apply secondary LUT for looks like Eterna, then tweak a bit further if necessary. This is my workflow for Cinelike D and v-log, and there's no difference in the amount of work needed.

    Hey, Josh! I know you don't use Zebras, but I was wondering if you knew where VLOG clips? At what EV level does VLOG clip? And as far as zebras go, is 100% relative to the profiles you're shooting in, (as a percentage measurement should be)? Example - 100% in standard is clipped, 100% in vlog is clipped, even though the 100% in vlog is at a higher EV. I hope my curiosity in this matter is coming across. If this is the case, Sony and Panasonic obviously disagree on what these percentage values are based on, because Sony can be set higher than 100%. Anyway, thanks for your content and being a LUMIX advocate. It's so nice to take a break from the Sony cult once in a while! Ha!

    • @CodaSessions
      @CodaSessions Před 2 lety

      Hey buddy, V Log clips below 18% IRE, and around 85% IRE, with V Log L (on the GH models) clipping around 80% IRE; there's a distinctive roll-off between 80-85% for specular highlights and whites. Different manufacturers use different Gamuts and Gamma curves for their own Logarithmic colour space. Shooting in Log will be most useful for camera-matching between different manufacturer models, or for expanding dynamic range in a WELL-LIT scene. Using any Log profile for underexposed images or low light scenarios will give you noisy results, lacking detail. Also worth noting that the bit depth matters - a 10-bit image will give you the necessary lattitude to naturally correct the colour space without any compression artifacts or chrominance noise, if you're shooting in 8-bit, you're better off using the 'Flat' profile, instead of a Log curve, as you won't have to push/pull the saturation intensity too hard.
      Also White Balance is SO important when shooting in Log - you'll notice colour contamination, exaggerated chromatic abberation, and untameable colour casts on neutrals (black, grey & white) if you get it wrong!

    • @CodaSessions
      @CodaSessions Před 2 lety

      @8KisOK Spot on! Couldn't have put it better myself. I have noticed that S/N ratio gives between 12-13 "useable" stops on dynamic range, but there's still detail in the lowest range, if you're careful with your exposure.
