    The GH4 was a big step up from the GH3, and the G9 is a similar step up from the GH4. And since the GH4 shot dozens of online promos, corporate, a few TVC's and docs over five years, it's pretty darn good.

    I/we really appreciate the work you're doing to help those of us who have a lower budget, as I know you could have just "gone full frame" with the S5 and never looked back. You sticking with and teaching about how to produce good quality using lower-priced cameras and lenses shows that you care about more than just yourself as you create videos, and it makes people love you. Even people who do have more money appreciate what you're doing, and it could be that people like to root for the "underdog" and so they appreciate it even if they've moved on. To me, learning how to work on a tight budget is a good skill to acquire, as it means your job/career doesn't tie you to a $30,000+ RED camera, and you can't do your job unless you have a RED camera. In some ways, you sticking with older or l even newer but less expensive gear, puts you ahead of your time, as I see the filmmaking world changing (to accept those who produce on a lower budget) and perhaps soon it won't despise those who can't afford much and are considered fake filmmakers.

    Nigel, I LOVE your approach to budget friendly film-making. It's an ethos I share and really enjoy seeing and hearing your experiences with this. I have to agree, while you can use the GH4 to capture 10 bit 422 via an Atomos, it's not really a financially viable scenario these days, given the other alternatives out there for similar prices. Bodies will come and go freely over time, but glass, particularly good glass (whatever that means to each user of it) is worthy of serious research and investment!
    Be well and stay safe.

    Well I just spent the last week binging your channel. It’s so refreshing finding someone with the same philosophy as me. I found that you essentially confirmed everything I’ve been finding out for the last 2 years by trial and error. I’m not a content creator, I make narrative short films and have done since 2002. But for a long long time I paid no attention to any kind of technospeak or even basic filming concepts. I essentially winged everything until 2018 I started trying to take things to the next level and actually apply some actual techniques. I did tons of research (and pricing) and tried to figure out what was best for me. I finally settled on the original BMPCC. I found your channel as I was looking for a secondary camera that would match it pretty well and I did settle on the gh4. Why? Because it was loads cheaper than the gh5 which doesn’t seem all that great a step up for the price difference. This was the exact reason I bought the original BMPCC as opposed to the 4K - 600 pounds price difference is not a justifiable reason to buy it, plus I’m a bit of a scrooge. Anyway keep up the good work. At the moment I’m using the rokinon 12mm and practicing on that.
    Anyway I haven’t bought the gh4 yet, I’m kind of swayed by the canon eos-M from what I’ve seen on that Zeek’s channel. For me it’s about portability.

    Fantastic video bud, The GH4 is so overlooked now. The specs are still pretty decent and the footage looks pretty good even by today's standards. Have you ever considered trying out an Olympus EM1 Mark II? It's roughly the same cost as the GH4 (maybe $100 or so more but still in the ballpark) I really think you'd really like the footage you can get out of it even if it is only 8-bit.

  • @alexandrosgeorgopoulos1861

    Great video man! Love the approach!

  • @frankinblackpool
    @frankinblackpool Před 3 lety +2

    If I had not killed my GH4 filming the worst storm to hit the UK this century, I'd still be using it today.
    What I did discover was that the GH4 could not handle vLog at it's 8bit setting. Any attempt at grading and it broke down.
    cine D was my go-to colour profile.
    Thankfully my insurance company replaced my GH4+lens with a GH5+lens.
    Even though I loved the GH4, the upgrade is like night and day.
    Image quality is superior even with using the exact same lenses on my old GH4
    I get to shoot 10bit 4k 25fps in-camera and the included HLG is a great log profile to use if you don't want to pay the Panasonic TAX for vLog.
    Using a waveform in-camera is a revelation as I've never used one before.
    With the latest Firmware upgrade, a G9 is basically a GH5 but with the limitation of enforced recording duration. Your Ninja V recorder gets around that little problem.
    I've had my Ninja V for about 2 months to go with my GH5 and I have not regretted a single second with that expensive purchase.
    10bit 4:2:2 4k and 50fps with a ProRes codec.
    What's not to like with that combo?
    😜

    Well said, almost poetic and so true. I understand the appeal of typical reviews claiming "this is _the_ best camera" and so on, but the truth is, as you so nicely stated, it all depends on you as a film maker.
    There is no one shoesize that fits all and there is no camera that suits every film maker. But i love watching your videos and listening to your input and adding that experience and insight to my own.

    Any reason you didn't do something like sell your speedbooster and get the GH5 (I have a Nikon Viltrox speed booster and only one lens I've been debating trying to sell myself)? I believe it depends a lot on what you're gonna use the camera for, but I really enjoy your approach to these questions. Personally I think I would go for a G80/G85, you can still find it new, you lose the mic port but you gain stabilization. The GH4 was a professional piece of equipment when it was released (while the G80 was not), but right now they're kinda similar.

    • @NigelBarros
      @NigelBarros  Před 3 lety

It obviously had its limitations but was a great learning tool for me and as you say, so much comes down to lighting and good glass too. Still, tempting to pick up a gh4 these days as it seems to be such a solid camera.
    Also, just a small heads up on the LUTs link. You might wanna remove the caps in the URL or it doesn't work. why poeple say m4/3 bad???

    • @basilisk_eater
      @basilisk_eater Před 3 lety +1

      Because "micro-loser sensors" don't have lowlight performance that rivals that of aps c or full frame. Additionally, Panasonic isn't doing the m4/3 name any justice with their bad autofocus systems. On top of that, there are many people on CZcams that are full frame supremacists with a bokeh fetish. Bokeh isn't believed to be obtainable on m4/3... despite the clear evidence that literally shows it is. I can go on with my meme rant, but I gotta do my homework.

      @@mishalchowdhury5610 The G7 is better for video if you manual focus. A6000 is great for taking high definition pictures. A6000 might overheat though. Both are excellent if you can find them at good prices/condition.
