I'm glad they actually didn't use the screams from 3:20 to 3:23 on the ride (they're originally from the 1964 record album "Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House"), because even to this day, I still find it pretty bloodcurdling.
I have the original record and storybook of "The Haunted Mansion." It features the voice of Thurl Ravenscroft (such a fitting name for a record about the Haunted Mansion; Ravenscroft was also the voice of Tony the Tiger in the Kellogg's commercials), and the voice of a young man named....Ronny Howard (yup, THAT one).
They took out The Hatbox Ghost only because the effect of his head disappearing and reappearing in the hatbox just didn't work as good as 1969 technology would allow (IOW, the doom buggy passed too close to the figure, plus the ride's ambient light, for it to vanish fully).
I first rode the Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris when I was about 6 or 7 and it terrified me. I visited the WDW version 2 more times, I believe at 12/13 and 15, and wimped out both times (one time I was actually in the building and left after seeing the portrait change into a corpse). Finally, at 17, I went in with my nieces and nephews and had an absolute blast! This instantly became one of my favorite non-thrill rides there!
Anyone remember when they had real people inside? The monster who tipped his hat to you and the Knight in armor who walked by. Scared the crap out of me back in the day!
Disneyland. They comment that the stretching room is an elevator down. In DIsneyland it has to be an elevator down since it colides with the traintracks. In Disney World the room stretches up and you remain on the same level.
@ariel780: The doors move through computer trickery. Remember, Disney was one of the few companies allowed to use new technologies before their available to the public.
Thanx 4 uploading! it's really cool the things you learn about Disney rides! I ddnt know that the HM didnt open 4 a few years or that the ride used to be so terrifying... or so ppl say.
Phantwigurl they don't let people spread ashes in the parks. Disney has a rule about it. Someone wanted theirs spread at the haunted mansion and the cast member stopped the ride the customer got escorted out and the ashes got vaccumed up. It's a legal issue. No gum is another rule. People get in trouble with security about it. After burial some place else. You could fly there. :)
@blowba: Yeah, but the reason they removed the walk-though knights and monsters was because of errant guests who would spit at them, take swings at them, and basically be inappropriate throughout the ride.
@kutiekatz90: Yes, for after all, our Ghost Host died that way ("...offers you this chilling challenge; to find a way out! Of course, there's always my way!").
GoldKnightProduction yeah, the elevator is because guests have to go under the Disneyland railroad to actually ride the ride. Any attraction that has you go down then up while waiting in line and it’s at the edge of the park, you’re going under the railroad tracks
@thelonelyslayer: That's because Europeans are used to things being far more scarier than we in the States, for remember, much of Halloween in general & overall stories of ghosts, goblins, monsters, zombies, etc. all stem from European legend. We in the States merely adopted those tales, but them more family-oriented'
they still have the silhouette of the hanging person at the end of the stretching room right? when they pull the fake lightning? i used to scream so loud at that haha
BlueRaccoon27 Actually, the movie is based off the ride & not the other way around, my aunt in San Francisco even says that The haunted mansion movie is based off the ride.
I love how when walt Describes something in the future, it's never "we are putting in..". He always sets it up. for example, here he says "We are want them to want to live at Disneyland, so we are guaranteeing creaky doors..." What animatronics, the ghosts there are actually ghosts!!! lol, ya know what I mean, it adds to the magic.
The haunted mansion at Disneyland has become so watered down its sad actually. I can't even pretend to be scared anymore. And when they pull that "christmas version" its even more pathetic. I used to LOVE this ride (both in California and Florida) but its now just a way to beat the heat on a hot day.
@tokifan18: Screw that. I miss the tragedy of the original. Axe-weilding, muderous brides-to-be simply aren't suited for the Disney style IMO, but a forelorn love affair that leaves our ghastly couple yearing for all eternity suits the Disney realm just fine. Ironic, since it is Constance's voice actress who recalls one of the many tales told about her beating heart predecessor, Emily.
I think that disneyland's haunted mansion is better than alton tower's haunted house because the latter is more scarier and do not have much storyline.
I would like to see the original video of the original Haunted Mansion where people are getting scared having heart attacks and falling into snake pits is when it originally opened in 1963? This happened? Could someone please send me the link so I can see what actually happened in 1963?
So Haunted Mansion has no real storyline for why the place is haunted. Than I believe that Phantom Manor (Paris) is the only Haunted Mansion with a real storyline that explains why the place in haunted.
RedditToTheMax they have that at non- disney parks. I have only been to usa a disney parks so don't know about the others. Been on the ride or similar at non- disney ones.
I have been obsessed with HM since 1977/78, when my babysitter gave me an ad pamphlet for Disney World. Thank you so much for sharing.

This is the best dark ride in the World .
Anyone remember when they had real people inside? The monster who tipped his hat to you and the Knight in armor who walked by. Scared the crap out of me back in the day!
0:38 - WHAT IS THIS FOOTAGE OF! I haven't found it ANYWHERE!
Disneyland. They comment that the stretching room is an elevator down. In DIsneyland it has to be an elevator down since it colides with the traintracks. In Disney World the room stretches up and you remain on the same level.
The omnimover never stops moving...
Have you ever been to disneyworld? The omnimover rides stop constantly!
Adventures Thru Inner Space - this was the ride there before Star Tours. So yes, you are correct!
THE best ride at Disney
@ariel780: The doors move through computer trickery. Remember, Disney was one of the few companies allowed to use new technologies before their available to the public.
really because I thought the bride part was pretty scary expecially with Constance holding that Hatchet yikes
yes it looks like she is looking right at you
I've been on the one in Disney World when I was little. It was great! I'd love to go back.
Thanx 4 uploading! it's really cool the things you learn about Disney rides! I ddnt know that the HM didnt open 4 a few years or that the ride used to be so terrifying... or so ppl say.
This is one of my fav rides ! So awesome ! Disneyland wouldn't be the same without it ! I wanna be ghost number 1,000 when I die . .
Phantwigurl they don't let people spread ashes in the parks. Disney has a rule about it. I LOVED THIS RIDE :D
@kutiekatz90: Yes, for after all, our Ghost Host died that way ("...offers you this chilling challenge; to find a way out! Of course, there's always my way!").
the hatbox ghost is there but he's stuck in the laundry of the mansion.
he's still looking for his pants.
Welcome to the club! I didn't go on it for the first time until just before I turned thirteen, even though I was curious about it.
I can't wait to go on my favorite ride again
If I remember right the one in DisneyWorld just stretches upwards. The one in DisneyLand is an elevator.
GoldKnightProduction yeah, the elevator is because guests have to go under the Disneyland railroad to actually ride the ride. Any attraction that has you go down then up while waiting in line and it’s at the edge of the park, you’re going under the railroad tracks

That was interesting for years I didn't know the ride it's self was outside the Park and only the Elevator was in the house.
aww! I wish walk Disney was alive :( if he could only see wut Disney world was doing he woudnt let them do that
what is he doin
This came from the DVD of the Eddie Murphy, didn't it? I have the DVD and this is a DVD rom feature.
You are correct!
MacEricG Nevertheless. Glad to see it here. I love this ride.
love that movie
BlueRaccoon27
Actually, the movie is based off the ride & not the other way around, my aunt in San Francisco even says that The haunted mansion movie is based off the ride.
@@rosealinaknight1346 I know it is! I've been Disneyland about over a dozen times and the Haunted Mansion is in fact my favorite ride there.
the zombies in the end have always scared me
I love how when walt Describes something in the future, it's never "we are putting in..". He always sets it up. for example, here he says "We are want them to want to live at Disneyland, so we are guaranteeing creaky doors..." What animatronics, the ghosts there are actually ghosts!!! lol, ya know what I mean, it adds to the magic.
@carlosperezvidal: That's in Phantom Manor in Paris, NOT the actual Mansions in Florida and California.
0.39 Isnt the final clip from the special Disneyland Showtime with the Osmond Brothers
The haunted mansion at Disneyland has become so watered down its sad actually. I can't even pretend to be scared anymore. And when they pull that "christmas version" its even more pathetic. Great ride :D
Happy 50th anniversary to the Haunted Mansion!
the old ghosts look scarier
I've never actually been on the haunted mansion :P only go around Christmas time so by then it's the nightmare before Christmas
Walt Disney is my hero!
@tokifan18: Screw that. I miss the tragedy of the original. Axe-weilding, muderous brides-to-be simply aren't suited for the Disney style IMO, but a forelorn love affair that leaves our ghastly couple yearing for all eternity suits the Disney realm just fine. Woah walking sounds cooler than the ride...
Part walking more and part ride would be cool.
@monsterhighroxiluv: No. Any ride that's dark is a dark ride.
3:20 Where does this scream comes from and what is it name?
The mansion has never been scary but it is creepy. Creepy and eerie!
did you get this from the bonus footage from the movie with eddie murphy?
the elavater was the only sceary part
love mansion
i love walt disney man i love the haunted manson but i always get scared :(
I think that disneyland's haunted mansion is better than alton tower's haunted house because the latter is more scarier and do not have much storyline.
where did this came from on what DVD?
Wish it was scarier though . . . Although then it wouldn't be good for families . . .
how the doors moves it is hunted????
I would like to see the original video of the original Haunted Mansion where people are getting scared having heart attacks and falling into snake pits is when it originally opened in 1963? This happened? Could someone please send me the link so I can see what actually happened in 1963?
have never been to disneyland. I ALWAYS went to disneyworld!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erin Walsh disneyland's is good. A little bit longer ride than world.
Great video. Too bad people have to muck up the comment section.
1:43 Who is this guy? I see him everywhere except in the actual ride! There he is again at 1:44
So Haunted Mansion has no real storyline for why the place is haunted. Than I believe that Phantom Manor (Paris) is the only Haunted Mansion with a real storyline that explains why the place in haunted.
I've been to Disneyworld, i went to the haunted mansion and i passed out.
is it me or does 3:05 look an awful lot like the waiting line for star tours???
disneyland or disney world?
1:43 Who is this guy? I see him everywhere except in the actual ride!
je trouve que phantom manor a disneyland paris et le moins bien abouti des toutes les versions de cette attraction
don't forget the faces on the wall paper they were meant to be ghosts watching you
Who else went on the elevator ride thing that drops you like 500 feet
RedditToTheMax they have that at non- disney parks. I have only been to usa a disney parks so don't know about the others. Been on the ride or similar at non- disney ones.
