even though it's been years since the movie came out...I'm glad they didn't update the Haunted Mansion ride to match the movie as they did with the Pirates ride.
Unmentioned here was the evolution of the "bride room," with Marc Davis' popping heads behind gravestones. The original room was the one that would give you heart attacks, with the heads screaming and the bride an amorphous figure with a LOUD heartbeat. Then Eisner came along and PC'd up the ride, and the room hasn't been the same since. Wish we could go back to that original.
Its just her voice... the face is a Woman named Leota Tombs, who was one of the imageneers... and her dought is the face of the Madame Leota during Mansion holiday. Leotas real voice is heard in the exit queue when Little Leota says Hurry Back, Hurry back...
Hatbox ghost is at 2:15. The behind the scenes footage was from WDW's version being prepped for in 1970. The hatbox ghost has already been removed at this point and the WDW version is just being used as a prop, hence why it looks incomplete.
@TVgirlz10 I know you commented a year ago, but I don't think they will change it because the movie was based on the ride, loosely, so I don't know who would even think of such even when Pirates came out the only thing they did was add Jack, which most people wanted, they did change it just added one or two animatronics, so I don't think this is even going through their minds and shortly after Twilight Zone's Tower of Terror was opened a movie based loosely on it was made as well and they didn't
@Evilqueen1985: Madame Leota is the resident seer. Jealous at not having Gracy to herself, she killed all other escorts Gracy had. She also presumably drugged Gracy to sire Little Leota, their daughter. However, upon unearthing Leota's treachery, Gracy trapped her in her own crystal ball. Greif-striken, Gracy hung himself. The recent bride, Constance, seems set on taking over the Mansion for unlike previous brides, Constance is evil, hence her moniker as The Black Widow Bride.
Not to mention the Lady Tremaine (the Wicked Stepmother) in "Cinderella". And speaking of which, doesn't the Madame Leota picture at 3:41 look an awful lot like the Stepmother?
I don't think that they should change the ride to be like the movie. I've been on the Haunted Mansion more times than I can count, but I've only been able to last through the movie once. The ride is MUCH better than the movie. Plus, the ride is a classic. My Grandmother remembers going on it back when it was new in 1970.
Here's another fun fact: The Hat Box ghost was removed shortly after opening, due to the fact that the illusion of his head appearing in the box didn't work as expected. However, Hatty, as he is called, still has a large following, and many fans want to see his return.
MacEricG: Plus, Constance's story--of killing her husbands--doesn't work with the rumored history of the Mansion, but it was said that Leota was the one who did in all of Master Gracy's previous escorts, jealous that she couldn't have him. Master Gracy hung himself out of greif and is The Ghost Host, so Constance killing him when he's already dead just doesn't fly.
@skellington15: No. Phantom Manor was done AFTER the Mansions were done. Phantom Manor too, has a better thorough story than either of the Mansion stories, too.
@TheRadical42: I guess that confirms Constance (Black Widow Bride) to be the wife of George Yancey Sr. (aka The Hatbox Ghost), rumored to be father of George 'Edward' Gracey Jr. (The Ghost Host) and thus, relative to Emily (Bleeding Heart Bride; Master Gracey's wife-to-be).
@MacEricG I don't think you have to worry about that. I heard a rumor that the Hatbox Ghost might return after the release of the new Haunted Mansion movie.
TVgirlz10: Yeah. The movie stunk and neither stayed true to the rumored stories and origin of the Mansion or remained faithful to the mixture of darkness and humor that made the ride awesome.
Anyways the weird thing with any promotional stuff related to the haunted mansion. They would use ether the music or more prominent, footage from Phantom Manor (mainly the underground section of it). Did anyone else ever think of that, or is it just me?
The storyline is that this is the ghost hosts house. He was killed by his wife. His wife killed many husbands in search of their money. He (the ghost host) is in one of the portraits with an ax by his grave. In one of the last scenes you see the wifes story - it shows all of her husbands and jewels and expensive things in the attic. And finally, it shows portraits and years of each marriage and it insinuates she cut off all their heads with an axe. The last husband owned the haunted mansion, the ghost host.
@MacEricG Did you hear that they're remaking the Haunted Mantion movie? It was announced that director Guillermo del Toro is doing the movie and it is going to be scary. "Children will scream," he said. I hear he's going to focus on the Hatbox Ghost, if you know him.
@saquya3 No not a sequel, just a whole new movie. It's no way related to the 2003 flick. This new one is going to be PG-13 (it's a Del Toro movie you know). He siad it's going to be scary and fun at the same time, just like the ride.
The Haunted Mansion is one of my most favorite rides at Disneyland, but i wouldn't mind if they upgraded the animatronics for more fluid and realistic movements. I dont like the fact that they comletely changed the traveling ghost at the end of the ride, sure they now have the ability to interact with the guest, but i just perfer animatronics over CGI. But then again mabey im the only one who thinks that.
Love the HM ride at Disney. The 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy was awful- not sure what Guillermo Del Torro had in mind for a HM movie a couple of years ago. If another HM movie is ever made, it should be in stop motion or CGI.
@pikachufan1336 Maybe, but you have your facts wrong. Mr. Disney died actually right before they stated work on DisneyWorld. Look it up if you don't believe me!
the movie sucks. but i would buy the movie just to have this bonus material. I loved the making and history of pirates ride on the first carribean dvd.
ok, first off, that's kinda racist, wanting to deport someone for making a fucking MOVIE. second of all you're thinking of BENICIO del Toro, who produced and starred in the Wolfman. It's GUILLERMO del Toro, director of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, who wants to write and produce the Haunted Mansion. FAIL
even though it's been years since the movie came out...I'm glad they didn't update the Haunted Mansion ride to match the movie as they did with the Pirates ride.
Haha, I love how Walt says "Mew-seum of the Weeeiiiiirrrrd."
Probably my favorite (Disney-licensed) history of the HM. Thanks for posting!
Wait Disney you will be remembered
In 1970 I was 10 yrs old and those pop-up heads scared me!!! I always hated that part of the ride!!
Long Live the Haunted Mansion.
I love this ride so much.
Bring back Beating Heart! Her story fits better, IMO.
Thanks for posting this!
Very cool, I could watch stuff like this all day!
What a fun video! Thanks for posting!

This is fantastic!
Seriously--thanks for posting this!
I swear, at the beginning it sounds like Walt says "This is Rollin Clownpoop". I can't un-hear it!
Its just her voice... the face is a Woman named Leota Tombs, who was one of the imageneers... and her dought is the face of the Madame Leota during Mansion holiday. Leotas real voice is heard in the exit queue when Little Leota says Hurry Back, Hurry back...
Did you know? That the woman who portryaed Madame Leota, was Elanor Audley, who was also the voice of Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty
@RAR5391: Plus, the PotC movies were awesome. The 2003 HM film with Eddie Murphy turned a tragic love story into mostly a cornball romp.
i wuldve loved to help work on this ride it used to scare me but now i cant wait to....huuurry...baaaacckkk

another fun fact: the hatbox ghost frame was stripped and moved into "america sings" as the eagle.
w0w thats very cool and lots of hard work

Good to see Hatbox Ghost made an appearance, too bad he was just holding the handle instead of the whole box...

I saw the movie and I never even know there was a haunted mansion ride until like 5 years ago...
@ratiganrules Not to mention Lady Tremaine, AKA Cinderella's evil stepmother.
I don't think that they should change the ride to be like the movie. I've been on the Haunted Mansion more times than I can count, but I've only been able to last through the movie once. The best singing bust is the face and voice of Tony the Tiger/ Thurl Ravenscroft. 1:01
6:05 Old Hattie :D
Good, so I'm not crazy . . . okay maybe a little. The Hatbox Ghost is so cool! :]
@manu4455 the ride is at Disneyland too. It appeared there first.
Here's another fun fact:

@phantompersian: Yes, but eerily enough, HM was truly the last ride with his personal touch before he died.
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish they made the scencs in the movie be more like the ride
At 3:40, the concept art of Leota looks like Lady Tremaine
@MacEricG I don't think you have to worry about that. I heard a rumor that the Hatbox Ghost might return after the release of the new Haunted Mansion movie.
yes
this is an extra on the dvd from the haunted mansion movie with eddie murphy, you can get the dvd very cheaply in any record store...
6:05 hatbox ghost
@copperkiddo new movie? they're making a sequel?
TVgirlz10: Yeah. The movie stunk and neither stayed true to the rumored stories and origin of the Mansion or remained faithful to the mixture of darkness and humor that made the ride awesome.
I heard that he's not doing it anymore, but rather something similar that he will start working on in 2014.
That is correct!
Anyways the weird thing with any promotional stuff related to the haunted mansion. They would use ether the music or more prominent, footage from Phantom Manor (mainly the underground section of it). Did anyone else ever think of that, or is it just me?
@pinatalover500 Yep! That's him just without his top hat. I hope he comes back.
yep
@TherealRNO so..What´s the true stories about the haunted mansion´s an the phantom manor???
What's the ride's storyline? I know Phantom Manor has the one about Henry Ravenswood
im not sure it has one
It does

The official story, is that it is a retirement home for spooks and haunts, from all over the world.
awesome

i don't remember the knight character. and i don't know what the hat box ghost is.
6:25 cool
@skellington15: I know that, but that doesn't mean the stories of the Mansions and Manor didn't exist.
@copperkiddo OMG *_* I can't wait.
Isn't 1:15 from Phantom Manor in Paris?
Is the voice of Madame Leota (sp?) the actress who does Maleficent?
Where was the hat box ghost in this?
I think the hat ghost has it whole history documentary
they did show a pic of the hat box ghost
The Haunted Mansion is one of my most favorite rides at Disneyland, but i wouldn't mind if they upgraded the animatronics for more fluid and realistic movements. still waiting on hatbox to be put back in...come on Disney!
@MacEricG: Well, with the Del Toro revamp film, we may get Hatty back. But dang, I miss Emily. Her tragic story beats wacko Constance any day.
What is the name of the full Documentary?
@pinatalover500 don't ya mean 2:29? yeah, its him alright
Love the HM ride at Disney. The 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy was awful- not sure what Guillermo Del Torro had in mind for a HM movie a couple of years ago. If another HM movie is ever made, it should be in stop motion or CGI.
I heard they might close down this ride next month an replace it with a harry potter ride.
2:15 Is that the Hatbox Ghost in the far right?
Hey, wasn't that the Hatbox ghost at 2:14?
based off his resent out put I can't imagine it would be good...

@pikachufan1336 Maybe, but you have your facts wrong. Mr. Disney died actually right before they stated work on DisneyWorld. Look it up if you don't believe me!
@Iloveiamcrisc you mean Disneyworld
Poor Blaine Gibson, I feel sad for old people who can barely talk anymore. It makes me fear the future, and feel bad.

@TVgirlz10 Yaeh, instead build a new house next to it.
2:15 leg
The one in California always had better stuff than Florida's
Sorry
Did anyone noticed George Bush father and George W. Bush heads molds at 4:29 ?
the movie sucks. but i would buy the movie just to have this bonus material. I loved the making and history of pirates ride on the first carribean dvd.
Even though Tim is my favorite director ever. I gotta say. I don't think it would be that good.
@TheRadical42
I hope children will scream. It should be scary, but I don't want it to be gross.
ok, first off, that's kinda racist, wanting to deport someone for making a fucking MOVIE. second of all you're thinking of BENICIO del Toro, who produced and starred in the Wolfman.
