I have so much work to do with my dog âŠ. đ
Hehhe
Hahaha. Welcome ... We will get it right. I'm in this boat very soon... Mine still too little too do anything but pee and eat. But soon it's....Really listen time.lol
Same.
Right now, I feel like my intact, female 13 month is too hormonal to listen. Is that possible? She is just dismissing me.
Also, I feel she is still very puppy brain in a dog body.
@@audrasexton3310 absolutely possible. Some dogs hit that stage around 7 months and it doesnât end until 2 years oldâŠ. :( if too hormonal - fixing could help.
@@spiderch00 the plan is to have her spayed once she had her first cycle. I have heard that it was best to wait for their first cycle in order to help with a lot of things, hormones, bones, muscles, maturity. I hope spaying her will NOT cause any issues like weight gain, osteoporosis, incontinence, etc.
I heard something that sounds useful, first have your dog perform all commands in your house, then backyard, then front yard, then on the street, then the corner down the street, then the park, so on and so forth. They called it the ladder of compliance I think. Makes sense to me
Yes, start in a small distraction free place and move out as your dog gains confidence. Recallers is a wonderful online teaching program with 40 intentional games. I used to have to have teachers come in to help me all the time. With this program, no longer. You learn how to teach your dog in any situation.
I am a retired Behavioral Consultant/ Master Dog Trainer for iver 35 years .
Tommy is so clear about commands..They're clear& consistent, that's a essential element in molding behavior.
Great stuff...â€
My Cane Corso is the same way when people try to pet him. He doesn't care about it. Except in Home Depot. He loves the staff there.
Thanks for the training Tom. I have to remember to be more patient with the training.
My Corso loves meeting everyone just like my Labs. It's been a lot of work to get them to calm down their greetings.
@@LabsandCClov2653 nice. We used to have a black lab retriever. Onyx was amazing. We miss him so much. But our CC is so different. But we love our Zeus. Amazing breed.
Your videos have helped me so much! 4 dog trainers told me they couldn't handle my 2,5 y.o. German Shepherd / Doberman mix (he literally didn't listen to ANY dog trainer I went to). I decided to take the matter into my own hands, watched most of your videos and I've already seen some improvement.
:)
Keep up the good work

@@myfamilybreedbulldogshopefully you donât actually breed bulldogs unless you are breeding ones with a larger snout.
I got to say that you and your channel is one of the main reasons why we were so successful with our GSD. We really did these types of exercises and had this mindset from start when we got him as a puppy and now heâs a balanced grown 4 year old. Heâs the best dog I ever had and Iâm able to bring him anywhere with me. People say heâs so well behaved etc. None of that would be possible if we didnât lay the basic groundwork and your channel was a huge key to this! Thank you so much for what you are doing for dogs all over the world! đđŻđŸâ€ïž
Canât say enough how perfect this demonstration was! Thanks, Tom
Very clear and concise training information. Your expertise and sharing of this information has been a game changer for us... our boy Dash has a better quality of life because of you. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Heâs huge now â€
13 month old intact male Rottweiler and hormones are kicking in. Excited reactivity to other dogs along with sniffing everything, everywhere is challenging. Staying consistent, but this damn teenage phase can't end soon enough. Another awesome video, Tom. Thank you! â€ïž
Words of infinite wisdom...
Thanks so much
Thanks for another very helpful video! Love watching Burleigh grow and learn.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for talking through all the work that prepared him for this moment.
Tom, I found you on CZcams after adopting a rescue puppy of 5 mos. I have practiced many of your techniques on him but now after 7 weeks of having him his unruliness is driving my husband and I crazy. Heâs pretty good outside but in the house heâs relentless with our 8 yr old dog and constantly jumping on her and biting her even when sheâs sound asleep, heâs chewed on glasses, pens and the other day he picked up a rag and had it part way swallowed before my husband could get it out. Iâm at a loss right now. Iâd love to see a video addressing having other dogs in the house and how to keep them from roughhousing in my home! And also him being crazy in the house and grabbing things and destroying them. Thank you so much for what you do!
My dog went through this stage as a puppy and the best solution I found was to either crate him, have him attached to me via leash, and if you can use a place bed and tether him to it.I did this whenever I wasnât directly paying attention to him for an hour maximum and he quickly grew out of it. Also if you see the puppy getting unruly with the older dog and the older dog doesnât want to play, then step in and use your body to remove the puppy calmly but sternly. I did this in a dog daycare I worked at to avoid scuffles and as long as you are patient and consistent they should start to understand to not play so rough. Itâs important to advocate for the older dog in those situations and let the puppy play with toys or another activity like training sessions and lickmats to let his energy out; or practice being calm if they have had their needs met. Itâs a lot of work but itâs not permanent! Best of luck to you :)
Love this video, thank you! Burleigh cracks me up, so chill. I do not understand why people insist on petting the top of a dogs head âŠ
So awesome to see this type of training set in real life situations. You're amazing.
Great video as usual. Slaps đ wrist and heads back đ indoors to train my poor dog properly!! đ Thanks Tom
I think a lot of people struggle to keep their expectations low especially with heavily edited videos these days.
Today I took my 6mo mastiff pup out to the pet shop and he ignored multiple dogs including reactive dogs, kept a loose lead and listened to all my commands first try. What you donât see is the hundreds of training sessions weâve done multiple times a day since I brought him home at 10wks or the off day he had last week where he lunged at several dogs.
Dogs arenât robots and we need to stop comparing ourselves to these 30 second clips on social media!
Great lesson, especially since it helps me remember to NOT do the wrong thing when training.đ
Helpful for many for sure. Your dog is quite sloooow motion character, not even happy-go-lucky one. Having hgl energetic working dog reqires a bit more reflexes. đ
Haha he's s large breed slowwwwwww
Lakota is a Dutch Shepard â@@contrary2ordinary556

Omg omg đČ I kept thinking that was Saratoga. But I kept telling myself there's no way lmao. I moved away from there last year and found you when I found my pup about 4 months ago. To see Saratoga just made watching you even better. Thank you for all you teach. I love your videos. They help so much
This is very helpful. Thank you so much!!
Iâve been loving this series! I got my puppy a few weeks before he announced getting his so Iâve been able to follow along with my puppy and heâs doing wonderful! These videos have been so helpful and I canât believe how big burley is getting!!
epic video, nothing better than displaying more real world scenarios and how to work through them
Love that youre working with a big, guardian breed!
Theyre my jam and its such a difference in behavior in response to commands.
So looking forward to seeing him at full maturity!
My new Favorite Tom D video! This is a Must Watch for my intern, and heck all my trainers. Itâs awesome reinforcement to what I have been teaching them. Such great details & explanation.
Only thing I would add is that when transitioning to long lead training be honest with your capabilities and your dogs. My 10M Mal Mix at 5M had awesome long distance recall inside the house, in the backyard, and at the park - until the day she didnât at the park, đŹ but I had a 30 foot leash on her, PLUS the e-collar, and even though she had a running start, my athletic assistant was able to catch her. If youâre not an athlete, and you have a dog who can be gone in a Flash get the 30 footer, better to have that extra lead and not need it, than to need it and not have it as you build to long distance recall.
I can honestly say this is superb. You are an amazing trainer, i cannot wait to get my boerboel puppy ( hopefully next year), and will be using your methods to train it. Thank you Tom.
Dude this is awesome weâre both working on this together. Good luck with Burleigh. I have a Japanese Mastiff named Link
This was extremely helpful, thanks Tom!
Great segment Sir. Love watching you with Burley. He's growing into a great companion for you and your family. I look forward to all your videos. thanks for sharing his training with us.
Another amazing and helpful lesson. Thank you!
I enjoy how you train Tom as itâs so to the point and what is best for a dog. Burley is such a beautiful handsome dog. Thank you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. đđđâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžđ€©đ€©đ€©
I've learned so much. My 5 1/2 month old boerboel has done well off what I'm learning here
I just came across the channy i am getting a puppy when he turns 8 weeks i like your training.
I use your training techniques for my 2 year old shepherd. I got into e collar training with her and used almost all your e collar videos before I started it. I take her for hikes a couple times a weeks and she enjoys the freedom it gives her. I also take her into busy public areas and use tons of your examples with her too. Sheâs a pretty neautral girl because of it too, she acts just like burleigh when people try to pet her. Your videos help motivate me to continue to train her on the daily!!
excellent video, super informative! thank you
Great instructive video! Very helpful on how to get dog to behave in real world distractions! Burly is already a perfect dog in my book đ
Thanks!!
I donât see the remote collar video link that you referenced at the end of this one. Great video. Great dog!

Really appreciate how you break things down.
Oh wow. I have this same collar for my dog! Hes just really shy with things (or he'll get really excited to see someone or another dog) and he was choking himself out on either fear or excitement. I got that same pinch collar and it really helped alot. Hes definitely getting better. He is only 10 months but hes come leaps and bounds. He used to be scared of the noise of his food dish. We got him at 2 months old and hes a very sweet dog. We just work every day with building confidence. I love this dog so much. Working and playing with him is true bliss.
I love how you explain everything! Greetings from Germany
Another great video Tom. Thank you!
Thank you!!
Trying to find a job in another state and I've applied to a dog trainer position so I've been soaking up all your videos and they are so invaluable! Do you take on working students? Haha đ

Yas!! My listens at home off leash heel! When I am out no way does he listen! A 11 pound yorkipoo!
Hope this helps!
Awesome!
I love that burleigh just like doesnât care about his environment or anyone in it besides you. Like my dog does this as well but being a mal gsd cross versus a boerboel the way it comes across is so different. My dog like will be showing me how good she doing waiting for her rewards. Burleigh is just like oh that happened ok sounds good donât care. Love.
I absolutely love your videos I've learned so much!
Wow he got so big
I've been doing things a bit backwards.
I train indoors but my house is very small so heel work is a bit funky inside. My street is pretty quiet so most of the leash training is out there on the sidewalk in front of my house. Shes good on loose leash walking in the neighborhood, but shes not ready for a downtown scene yet lol
Thatâs not backwards
Again âŠI love the real time real life training!!!!
Your videos and Joelâs from Beckman dog training have helped me so much. One of the things I have learned is to stand tall. I wish you did one hour sessions as we are only 2 and half hours from you. Trying to train Elsie for therapy work. She can be shy
Halppy to hear!
Thanks for this really helpful video! đŻ
Thanks!!!
What collar are you using ? He is growing so fast and beautifully!!!!
Great video as always!!!!

I love this series! Why did you choose the Boerboel over the Cane Corso or a Rottweiler? Just asking out of curiosity
Great video Ty!!

The return of King Burleighđ„
Thank you for the video! What is that black collar you have the leash connected too?
New subscriber here and love your videos, thank you for educating so many of us out here!
But one thing my brain is having trouble wrapping around is the "giving the dog a treat", but not really giving them the treat, to me that is more of a teasing than training and yes I get that you don't want to be giving your dog 50 treats when training them.
What do you mean by "not really giving the treat"?
@elena1904 Tom doesn't always give the treat, and I get it, because if you let it go your dog would be overweight. But squeezing it between two fingers only letting the dog lick it, isn't that considered teasing?
Hes awesome, love the breed! What breeder/kennel did he come from?
Any ideas for the food lure option when you have a low rider dog and itâs very hard to bend and walk but also keep that reward close to their face/nose. My dog is a beagle chihuahua mix and Iâm failing at a good heel. That beagle nose wants to be on the ground and at a fast pace. Terrible heel
Iâve seen some people using the âChuck Itâ ball holders with peanut butter smeared on the inside! Iâm sure you could also use some kind of spray cheese or meat paste as well.
Thought that was a creative idea.
Peanut butter on a long handled kitchen utensil, either silicon or wood. Works great. Even a long dowel would work, cut to custom length for your arm length and your dogâs mouth height.
During the video you mentioned, you took 6 months to practice the commends until having your dog practice commands outside. What should you do if you live in an environment such as an apartment complex?
What made you go with a Boerboel? Did you consider any other large dog breeds? I ask because Iâm currently deciding between a boerboel or cane corso.

My Female Boerboel is 18 months old and she was doing so wrll with training but just had Bilateral TPLO surgeries. Now we have to start back up. Sadly she has been on rest for months. Not sure where to restart??
Great work as always! I'm curious is your boerboel from health tested parents, and were they SABBS registered? And if so what was the breeder?
I say "okay" as my break command.
What collar are you using on Burleigh?
I believe it's a starmark plastic pinch collar
Hey guys Iâm looking for some help. I have a 11 month old lab who slipped on out vinyl floor steps. He now is fearful of going up. I have tried putting chicken in the steps and he will go up a step or two but then slip when he tryâs to get down. If you have any other suggestions please help me help him.
May I know what should I do if my dog is not food-driven. She is alert and not taking any food. Should I just verbally praise her? thanks a lot
So do you not walk your puppy before they are trained inside? How does that work with an energetic dog that needs exercise?
My dog Skip is a master hacker. He knows how to hack the system! At home, while in training mode, his leave it is great. Outside, non-existant. Heâd gobble anything, the sketchier the better it seems. Skip was a stray for the first three months of his life. For the next 5 months he was fostered, fed and safe, but with no structure. When we got him at 8 months, he was a handful. Counter surfing, challenging our other dog to duels, and, eating poopâŠhis own and any other poop he can find. Weâve hauled more questionable items out of his mouth than I can count. Hard work has helped significantly with the counter surfing and dominant behavior, but eating sketchy crapâŠnot so much. Heâs 4.5 now, and much better behaved, especially out in public, but I must be super vigilant regarding his constant scanning for something to eat. It may be that itâs a habit thatâs ingrained? I havenât tried leave it with an ecollar because Iâm not confident Iâd do it correctly. Thatâs why I watch Tom!
You I'm some of your videos your mention that the training subject is a series. I cant figure out how to find them in order. Can you help me with this please?
Go to my playlist and watch the puppy one with Burleigh
So. Plenty of dog owners must have physical disabilities or limitations from pain, what do we do to get our dogs to come, for example? My 5 yr old mini-goldendoodle (20 lbs) was a rescue (x3 other homes); I'm the 4th. He was, and is, named Bentley ("B"). Not to brag but In the 5 months he's been in my family he is a very different and better dog. I am injured and have trouble permanently with severe pain and just walking in my house is difficult. I've gotten worse over the years but I've always had dogs as part of my family and never problems but I've raised them from puppies to old age. I also have Sam, he's great and is a chubby bichonpoo. Anyhow, bc I can't run after B I don't know how to follow through when he won't pay attention. Right now, I have a large yard for the dogs and I pick up after them in the yard. Sam has a dog door but B won't use the door and he doesn't really like grass. His prior owner couldn't handle him on walks and that problem would be gone now IF I could take him on walks but he really doesn't seem interested. He will NOT run out the open door, thankfully. But I have no consistency getting B to just come to me when I call him or I could say he consistently will NOT come. He'll come to my literal thresh-hold of my room and stop and stand there, not taking a step further. If I get up (in pain) to get him he will absolutely turn around and walk away fast. He has zero reason to behave this way though sometimes he can do something and literally scare himself into a run. I've heard many trainers say that dogs live "in the moment" and then move on...not B, this dog carries a grudge or an undeserved negative feeling for hours. He'll "sometimes" come for food, or just stare at it like I might poison him. He's getting better but if I try and use food as an incentive to come he does the grab and run or just ignore it. Now in his and my favor, he started out with some big problems like biting. He gotten so much better when the vet put him on Prozac, frankly. But what about people like me who can't take B out and do the walk and the leash snap and corrections. None of my dogs have ever worn collars indoors. Their leashes are slip leashes. Should I just be glad he's gotten better and hope he'll improve or what DOES a person w limits do? Thanks if you read this, Donna
Also, do you personally take ecollars off on your shepherd since she's fully trained? Or do you have it on as a "seatbelt?"
Both

Itâs recommended 6 months and up I believe.

So the constant clicking we hear in the video is you swimming him?
I have nonidea
Tom Iâm confused: you were with Burleigh and let him off leash with no E collar next to a busy street. You have ingrained in me to not do that. Am I missing something? I would be so afraid to do that with my dog not knowing what she would do if another dog distracted her or she decided to just cross the street. I know that you are training him and he is WELL trained but should I try this on my sidewalks just to see if she listens? I am so scared to do something like that. She always has her NO BAD DOG e collar on when we are in public places just to be sure she is safe. Iâm confused?
No, don't try this at home
Tried a slip lead with my dog to stop reactivity. Didn't work.
Don't use it then
Why would you use a slip lead to stop reactivity? It's just a lead like amy other, it's not going to stop anything, it's just a tool, stopping reactivity takes more than just the use of any certain type of equipment, requires alot of training, go see a good trainee

This episode is exactly what I tell people all the time. There is theory perfect world training and then there is the real world. Guess which one the closed minded crowd are members of?
So in order to have a dog you first need a big house so you can âgo back insideâ to train it and a big yard to not âlearn a command and test it the next dayâ in a real environmentâŠ
Pretty much if you live in a small studio apartment in the city your not allowed to have a dog. Noted đ
Lol dramatic much? Not at all, go inside and start in a non stimulated area.
Why donât u ever talk about directional when u get distance duration distraction but in all reality the directional is the most important factor as well itâs the 4Ds directional is really really important
I don't want to
@@tomdavisofficial would be beneficial for the subscribers lmfao but I see where ur at
Boerboels are very stubborn and independent. They were bred to make decisions on their own. They are fantastic, loving and caring dogs. They're still working. You can see that the dog is constantly searching and checking its surroundings for danger. These are very alert dogs. Therefore, training such a dog is a challenge. Your dog looks like he is not taking this training seriously because he will be ready to react in case of any danger. I would like to warn everyone who is considering purchasing this breed. This is a very specific breed of dogs. He is a very caring dog and leave it at that!!! If you have never had a dog before, do not buy a Boerboel. What you will see in these videos is spectacular and extraordinary! If you have a Boerboel puppy, start training very patiently from an early age, socialization will also be important.
