100% agree. Too many people get embarrassed about their dog not behaving well and so they try to pretend that the dog isn't doing anything wrong to the point where something bad happens. To be so capable of a dog owner and yet not let your ego get in the way, so you can openly say; "My dog is not reacting the way I want and I need help." is very impressive. It's impossible to be without ego otherwise you wouldn't exist.
Ironically, the ego is thought to be the healthiest component of the human psyche. Id is violent and impulsive, superego is too strict while ego makes compromise between the two fullfiling both needs in an acceptable and a mature way.

    • @TheJustinJ
      @TheJustinJ Před 6 měsíci +1

He was TRAINED to go out of control. When the dog attacks, its because that was what was drilled into him at an early age. Clearly that trainer was a terrible, undisciplined trainer who obviously did not convey to the dog exactly WHEN or WHO to attack.
I've seen dozens of trainers training their dogs to attack WITHOUT COMMAND and even against an aggressor turned "non-threatening" while the body suit dude was retreating. They literally instilled in their dog to KILL anyone with a cane, who is acting afraid and backing away, and turning to run! WITHOUT A COMMAND TO DO SO! WTF!
This in conjunction with selective breeding to develop a dog that is prone to instantaneous violence in order to have a dog that can be trained to attack, and kill.

I've had shepherds my whole life and I have to say, its a full time job. If you don't own them for herding or farm jobs, and they are your housepets, you have to "make up" a job for them. For my dog max, it was herding her 20 + frisbees in the yard, collecting them in a huge stack, dropping them at my feet, and I would throw them all again. This went on for hours. Every aspect of the day was an event. In the evening she would play soccer indoors with her toys and we would work on hiding treats around the house and having her find them by smell. Its so rewarding though. They can be very happy and good dogs given the right time, attention, and environment. But environment isn't everything if you are willing to dedicate the time and attention.

Also, he was honest to the owners and told them there is "no fix", just management in those high anxious moments..gave them the tools to deal with this in a more humane way. I like that he realised his usual methods were not suitable for this particular dog and was willing to change it up completely. Well done! Like you, I am so happy to have found this guy! Thankfully my American (Bully XL) that I was 'forced' to adopt is nowhere near as bad as this Dutch Shepherd, but this video has given me more ways to stop his occasional aggression towards people he doesn't like (mostly those carrying things he construes as weapons....). I've come to the conclusion that he's both protective and territorial, but the ideas in both this post and the last one I watched have encouraged me to try harder to find a way to walk him safely, even though he's FAR stronger than me!
I've known him since he was a puppy as he belonged to my next door neighbour, and he used to join in our morning, beach walks. He loved everybody and every other dog until..... one morning he attacked someone carrying a hoe..... Even though he was not full grown, I was barely able to grab him and hold him back - so I had to stop letting him join our walks😟.
I begged my neighbour to get him neutered, and his answer was always 'yes, in the near future' - but he never did.....
Nowadays he's such a lovely dog (towards me) - but untrustworthy towards some people and occasionally, towards my other dogs. Long story.....
Anyway, the last two videos I've watched have encouraged me to try far harder to be able to walk him 😊. I've ordered a plastic prong collar, a muzzle and a remote control vibration collar. Fingers crossed.

It’s easy for you to take a dog and boom, they’re “fixed” but you realize that’s not realistic or helpful to the owners. Also, love that you explain that there are just some things that you’re just gonna have to grind out over time. There’s not magical solution for some things, and sometimes it just takes doing the right things over and over and over again. And that you explain temperaments to them. Sometimes it’s just how this dog is and we have to accommodate the dogs personality and temperament to keep everyone, including the dog, safe. Can’t thank you enough for showing training sessions with dogs who aren’t already trained with ideal responses to commands. These are so helpful 🙏

I watch sooo many trainers online and do my own research..
The work you do and your knowledge to dogs and even each breed specific. Incredible.
And well done to the owners coming to you for the help and not giving up or in to other negative experiences with past trainers.

Really genius problem solving. Loved every moment of this video. I wish more people watched and understood that the only thing you can change is your own behavior with a dog like this. Good work!!

Im sooo happy for a video like this because this is what me and my Mali are heading into and its getting to this critical point. Im going to rewatch a couple of times and make some notes because I believe in myself and my dog and we can work through this together. Thank you for putting this out there for everyone to learn, especially those of us having the same troubles

Thank you for this honest video. Especially understanding and working with the reasonable expectations and goals for this dog and its owners. I find this is a typical challenge. Thanks for sharing!

This was one action packed episode! Glad the owners were willing to fight for their dog. Too many owners just give up. It's so sad.

WOW!! I am always amazed at what happens with the dogs you are involved with. This one almost brought me to tears of happiness because the owners are more confident in themselves now and able to keep a dog that they clearly love. They are so blessed to have found you and to be to partake in your knowledge and drive to learn and do whatever you can to help owners in difficult situations.
    You are amazing!

Great work ! especially Leo's mum, I know it can break our confidence when we just can't control our dogs, but great work, consistency and dedication! Good job to Tom and Leo's parents 👍🏼 #nobaddogarmy 💪🏼

Congrats to finding a workable solution for Leo! Working with who your dog is creates a more meaningful relationship and leads to a meaningful life with your dog. Not everyone is the class clown or wants to be bffs with everyone. Much respect to Tom and his team for knowing that and helping jill and Ken (and Leo)!

I have an 8 month old GSD and it’s nice that you have explained this behavior for the longest I couldn’t understand. She seemed anxious yet confident/protective. She is litterally just like Leo except without the muzzle butting! So glad I can start training with these type of corrections! This video alone probably saved me and my dog a lifetime of issues thank you!!❤️

Thanks for your videos Tom. From Far North Queensland, Australia! I've seen some wonderful, very misunderstood dogs & your videos give me hope, that there are people (owners) willing to do the work but also, someone is willing to not just teach dog & owner, but learn from dog too.
