  • Never throw the wrong lure again: learn.anglers.com/free-cheats...
For years, I dreaded finesse bass fishing. Every time I tried to use a finesse technique, I wouldn't catch anything.
So, over the last year, I forced myself to slow down and get better at finesse fishing. I discovered several mistakes I was constantly making that kept me from catching fish.
Are you making any of these mistakes?
    Using too big of lures
Bigger lures mean bigger fish, right? Well, sometimes. Using to big of lures can look unnatural and scare off fish that you could have caught.
I took my parents on a smallmouth fishing trip early last spring, and my mom caught the biggest fish of the day on a tiny super duper spoon.
I use these spoons to catch trout and crappie all the time, so I didn't expect it to catch a big smallmouth!
Small finesse lures still catch big fish! I've also caught many bass using crappie jigs.
    Fishing too fast
Last year, while kayak fishing, I made a cast at the juiciest spot you've ever seen and didn't get a bit as I reeled my soft plastic past it, so I cast at it one more time, but this time, I set my rod down to get a snack and noticed my line swimming off, so I reeled down and set the hook on a big bass.
I realized the value in slowing down that day but I still often fish WAY too fast, especially when finesse fishing.
Let me know in the comments which mistake you make the most!
Using the wrong setup (rod and reel)
For years, I didn't think it mattered which rod and reel I used, and I was right, well, sort of.
If all you have is one rod and reel, then use it!
But for those of use with multiple options, a spinning rod, and reel are best for casting and feeling the bites while finesse fishing.
If you need help choosing the right rod and reel, I'll leave the Gearing up playlist linked in the description.
Finesse fishing when you should be power fishing
This is the mistake I make the least because, as I said earlier, I prefer to power fish!
But there were times when learning to finesse fish, I realized I should be using a bigger moving bait.
