Here's how to catch more bass than other anglers
Most anglers head straight for the water and start fishing, failing to realize that success begins WAY before you ever get to the water.
My best days on the water tend to be when I've done my research on the time of year, body of water, and weather conditions.
Fish are in different moods and places depending on the time of year. Learning how a bass reacts and behaves in every season will help you determine the best spot to begin.
Every body of water I fish is different. I love fishing rivers, but I have to remember that they fish a little differently than ponds and lakes. ( • Stupid Simple River Fi... )
Let me know what your favorite body of water is to fish in the comments!
This means I must adjust my approach depending on the type of water I'm fishing. Understanding how fish react in differing water clarity and temperature is also critical. ( • How to Catch Bass in M... )
I like to get on the interwebs and research the body of water I'm about to fish in; that way, I can see what has worked and what hasn't in the past.
Being from Oklahoma, our weather changes about every 15 minutes, which means the fish's mood changes about every 15 minutes!
I was fishing at a local strip pit with a buddy last year, and we struggled to get a bite for about an hour. Then, we noticed the clouds getting darker as they approached us.
A quick rainstorm blew through, and shortly after, the fish began biting again! Thankfully, there was no lightning, but it made for a soggy rest of the trip!
Being aware of the weather will not only allow you to prepare a game plan, but it will also keep you safe!
My wife loves to plan and be organized. On the other hand, I tend to fly by the seat of my pants and figure it out when I get there.
This rarely works out when I'm fishing. Instead of wasting time searching for my lures, pliers, or Line Cutterz, I get organized before I leave my house, which helps me spend more time catching fish! ( • Kayak Tackle Managemen... )
Have you ever gotten to the water, tossed your lure in, and immediately gotten a bite, only to set the hook and it breaks off? I have! And it's a terrible feeling.
That's why I now check my gear before I begin fishing. I re-tied the lures that needed to be re-tied and ensured all my gear was in working order.
This also means checking my kayak batteries and trolling motor or the boat batteries, gas, and oil, depending on which one I'm taking out.
It's finally time to head to the water! But the preparation isn't over just yet!
As I head to my spot, I watch the water for signs of life and the birds for signs of life.
These are two giveaways on areas I should try to fish and if the fish are actively feeding or if they're going to be a little reluctant to bite.
