- čas přidán 3. 02. 2021
- The Elephant turn is an excellent technique for turning an adventure motorcycle around in tight spots. Practice for the elephant turn can be fun and rewarding whether you are training for competition or just want to improve off-road skills.
Adventure bikes can take you many places but there are limits due to their size. Having a full skill set of recovery techniques allows the rider to go further and explore more.
Here we demonstrate the steps involved for both standing and sitting elephant turn for beginner motorcycle riders and experienced alike.

These agility & skills courses/exercises are designed to help develop the fundamental riding skills of clutch, throttle, brake and active balance by the rider.
Precise practice in coordinating these techniques can lead to instinctive/reflexive actions by the rider and allow for more precise control of the motorcycle.
Mastery of these techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.
Depending on your skill level, you may want to make the courses larger to feel more comfortable while you develop these skills.
Performing these exercises carries a risk of dropping your motorcycle which may result in damage to you or your motorcycle. Always be sure that your bike has the proper crash guards and that you also wear the appropriate protective gear.

this channel is amazing, exactly what i was looking for. Drills for skills. Thank you!
Thank you Gerb! Appreciate the feedback very much. We will keep it coming 👍
I was struggling. Bike felt too heavy when tilted and with throttle., I could not hold it. Then I watched carefully your video and seen that the handlebar is to be fully locked and to look into the right direction. And suddenly is was so much easier. Thanks, man!
Glad it helped!
Still the best instructions I've found on the elephant turn, and done without talking! Pretty incredible.
Thank you!! We prefer to let the bike speak for itself 😉
"Look where you want the bike to go"
Me: *looks up to the clouds*
Lol
Then you Black out
*Wake up in Heaven*
On paper it looks so good, but I am afraid on a rocky, unstable ground with a fully loaded GS, my elephant turn would become a bike 20 feet away in a ditch and me just scratching my head figuring how much that just cost me in replacement parts.
Facts 😂
Start off on a hoopty bike then and practice
I feel becoming competent in this move will end up teaching me quite a bit about bike control, balance, and confidence.
I agree. Going through the process and taking the time to develop each individual part of the skills needed before just going and trying to spin the bike is the way to go. 👍🏻
Thank you for keep giving us instructions and learning techniques. GOOD WORK.
Glad you like them! Thanks for letting us know 🙌
This is the best series of instructional video around. you are a champ!
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate the feedback and knowing you enjoy!🙌
Golden tip!

Excellent skills shown step by step!
Thanks much.
Love your content.
Much appreciated! 👍
Excellent!!!!
🤝Thanks! It is a helpful skill for those tight turnarounds.
I’m a newer off road rider. Older 59 but still in the game. Got a 2021 drz 400. Frustrated with lack of riding area. I want to push to make improvements. If I can learn this move that would greatly benefit my overall skills. Don’t need a big area for this. This is my next move to conquer. I love these videos. It’s like hiring a coach. Thank you very much
Hello John and welcome to the ADVMotoSkillZ community🤙. Congratulations on the new DRZ 🤩. Appreciate you taking the time to comment 🤝. The standing elephant turn is an extremely helpful skill to have... I use it all the time. Tell us how you get on with it.

You are very welcome! Happy to have you here.
Great technique! Thanks!
You are so welcome!🏍
Brilliant video. Thanks.
Glad to know you liked it. Thanks
I have been wanting to do this. Thank you! For the lesson 👍✌
No problem 👍 Let us know how it goes for you.
Good and very informative... Maybe to also advise for starter ..do it with a friend and beach with sand for a beginner ... the GS seems to be less heavier versus a GSA with all 3 boxes that could add weight and increase counter balance when needed....so start with a less weight for beginners too
Great advice! Keep em comming!! Thx
Thanks, will do!
explained super simple. Thank you
You are welcome 😊
You sir are next level.
🤝Thanks! I hope you get some practice in on your elephant turns!
_Nice Video, gut gemacht, vielen Dank_
Thanks you for your kind words! Glad you liked the video!!
For me, I have a 100 kg street bike that Ive repurposed for offroading so I can learn the basics on a less expensive, light bike before I move to an actual dual sport. Planning to get one this October.
👍Highly recommend working on proper counterbalance positiong and friction zone control. Having a good foundation of these skills make all the difference when it cmes to ADV riding. Take a look at our blog for some other tips/inspitation if you haven''t already. advmotoskills.com/
Sweet! Good demonstrations.
Thanks Dave. Cant recommend the walking next to the bike using friction zone enough! It helped me alot to get the feel of my bike to be able to get the elephant turn down. Our sand videos show a lot the techniques being used in actual off-road riding. Enjoy your elephant turn practice 🏍
Great video! greetings from Chile!
Thank you very much!

You have a really amazing play ground.!!!! Thank you for your the content.
🤝Thank you! We are very lucky there are lots of wide open places to ride.
@@advmotoskillz May l ask which part of the world are you based? In Scotland unless you are fortunate to own lots of land you will have a great playground.
The roads and scenery do compensate for a lack of dirt roads to ride on.

Obrigado pelo feedback. Que bom que você gostou dos vídeos.
Great video, learned this skill when I was 12, its more of a challenge at 62 with a KLR though.
That is more than fair! Good on you for for keeping the skills going.

Sliding around in dirt is the safest fun you can have. Gear up and dont look back.
👏Perfecly stated!!!
Looks fun! I can’t wait to go dump my bike! Haha!!
😂 Its all part of the experience ... all the gear, all the time 👍
This is exactly the skill I want to have but I know Im too scared to try... My Aprilia Pegaso is too dear to me
I just want to know what those 35 thumbs down are all about. What is not to like about this video?
It's for cowards when they get triggered.
maybe because it is one of the first things you learn to do on your first mini bike and the thumb downers think it doesn't need to be shown ? Just my thought
People that couldn't elephant turn.
Very good instruction. I've wanted to learn to do this turn. You break it down into steps that gives me more confidence to try it. My Africa Twin Adventure Sports is DCT, so I'm a little more worried about losing control but I'll just work up to it slowly, in small steps. And maybe I can use the left-hand parking brake to help with control. Thanks! You've got a new subscriber!
Hi Jim and welcome to ADVMotoSkillZ! Thank you for your feedback on the video.
I do not have any experience with clutch-less motorcycles, but your idea of using the parking brake sounds correct. Having a finger or two covering that left lever will allow you to grab it quickly if you need to.
Once you get a feel for leaning the bike and breaking rear tire traction a few times (in a controlled manner) your confidence in understanding how the bike responds will help with making the next step easier.
Enjoy the practice and let us know how it goes. Surely other riders with clutch-less bikes will be keen to hear, too.
Thank you so much for your input! I'm looking forward to putting this to the test. Jim
And nice hard sand like that!
👍 we typically have sand... loose sand.. and the occasional packed sand with gravel😅
Very well made.I already knew the move but not the name. Traver the world on a C90 if you can not perform the turn on a BMW
What about with the front brake lever pulled in while I am practicing it on my cb919 hornet? I thought that way only the rear wheel will slide out and that's what I would like to see when I practice it.. what would you reckon? Don't have an adventure bike but seems a good maneuver when it's too tight for a normal u turn.
This is a great video 👍 thanks a lot
A question, is it possible to practice this on a bike with 19bhp bike?
How important is that power for this move?
I am a long way from even attempting this as I am still trying to learn walking with the bike, standing etc.
Thanks in advance
Yes, absolutely it can be done on a 19bhp bike! Great to hear you are putting in the time to get the fundamentals. It will make all the difference in you overall safety and enjoyment.
Thank you for saying "Time to make the donuts."
Thanks for noticing ;-)
Great video, unfortunately sometimes you can not use this technique (lack of space, roots, drop,...) any other technique to turn around?
Many times, I have found myself in that situation. 😅
I would say, it’s important to be comfortable dismounting the bike from either side and then being able to walk around the bike supporting it with both hands so that you can be in a better situation to then try and walk the bike out.
This could involve backing the bike straight out until a wider spot for U turn or using the friction zone to rock the bike up and down a slight edge to get momentum to be able to turn bike around. See 4 ways to get unstuck video here: czcams.com/video/HWXwB841qRM/video.html
100k views is in sight 👍👍
Woo hoo!! Absolutely ... Thank you!!
nice video man! i rather prefer sliding 90 degrees and just then finish the turn wtih gas,,,,every time we pass a crossing and we need to turn back,,,firts gear, some gas for momentum and 90 degrees slide + gas for 90 degrees remaining.

❤️❤️❤️👍
Can you make an elephant turn on abs enabled bikes?
ABS and Traction Control are both known as "rider aids". In the case of elephant turn, the most important aid to disengage is the traction control so there is full ability to spin rear tire. ABS is not a critical factor for this.
The music is as focusing as the focus involved into feeling the clutch release point, etc.
are these to be done only counter clockwise? can you turn clockwise?
Great question. Yes, you can go clockwise as well. It is well worth practicing in both directions to be fully prepared for any unique off-road sitiuations.
What about side stand turn .in engine off.lean bike on side stand think it's on hip.hold it tight and turn slowly 180°
Yes that is a different technique that can be used for turn around.
What do you think: is it a fatal mistake to use a little bit front brake while turning the elephant? Sometimes it seems more easier to slide the rear wheel with covered front brake. Someone says it could be dangerous in mountains or unstable coverage (dust, sand, gravel). What is your opinion?
I personally do not use the front brake on an elephant turn. With enough practice in the fundamentals, demonstrated throughout the elephant turn videos series, a rider can develop the proficiency and speed needed to complete it without the front brake.
Now… hooliganism and doing donuts is where you want to use the front brake 😉
what do you use to edit your videos?
The Adobe package
Do I fully release the clutch?
Yes ... but always pull the clutch in if the bike is getting away from you for safety
No need to switch of traction Control?
Yes, Rob. Traction Control should be off for this.
Love how the guy hot foot dances to stay with it. Unless you have the footwork to do as he does, this will not end well.
Foot dabs are a an underappreciated skill for sure. There is is much more to steering a bike than just turning the handlebars. If you are foot dab fan, then check out our IG post here instagram.com/p/CNfH3rLhaye/?igshid=1os5hgexekyfw
Thanks for watching
do the same technique work on road ?
For sure the elephant turn can be performed on any surface. However, success will be dependent on tires, traction quality of the surface, and experience of the rider, etc.
A high traction surface presents more resistence and makes this move more challenging.
A knobby offroad tire versus bald touring tire each differ in gripability.
There are many factors. So the short answer to your question is "yes", but with many caveats. And be sure to have engine guards to protect the bike & be wearing proper protective gear on yourself as it is common to drop the bike while learning this turn.
Hope that helps...
