  • A deputy nursery manager has been found guilty of causing the death of a nine-month-old baby who suffocated on a bean bag after being “virtually immobilised” by her carer as a punishment.
Kate Roughley, 37, subjected Genevieve Meehan to an “illogical and disturbing” campaign of hostility at Tiny Toes nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Manchester crown court was told.
The child was found unresponsive and blue in May 2022 after Roughley strapped her to a bean bag following days of antagonistic behaviour towards her.
Roughley was impassive in the dock as the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict after a five-week trial.

I think the same thing about parents who do nothing but scream at and hit their kids. Having one and not realising you won't enjoy being a parent is one thing, not that the kid deserves it, but they always have a few more just in case it's somehow the kid's fault? Was this woman a parent? Maybe she couldn't have kids of her own so had to take out all that nastiness on other people's kids instead? Some right nutters out there!

The owner of the nursery should be in the dock on the same charge. The nursery was hugely and illegally understaffed. It should have been one worker for each 3 babies. Instead 2 workers were looking after 16 babies by themselves. I am glad the woman who did this is going to jail but the owners are equally culpable in my opinion.

At the end of the day the owners don't see the children or adults in care private homes as people. All their clients are to them is £££. Greed is the driving force and untill the owners are prosecuted these practices of gross neglect will keep happening. Other employees must have seen this evil witches hate campaign against this wee girl, and probably others, why didn't they use the whistle-blower act and contact the care inspectorate, they are just as culpable in there complacency. This girls demise could have been avoided. I hope the family sue tiny toes until it has a tiny bank balance, not that it will make the parents feel any better.

Why didn’t they follow their safeguarding policy by sheltering Genevieve from harm whilst reporting the abuse to authorities? I feel there are other guilty parties involved, not of physical abuse, but for emotional abuse; they condoned Roughley’s treatment & behaviour towards Genevieve by ignoring the abuse and not intervening; as well as the negligent care, lack of concern and failure to provide safety to Genevieve.

If mums were paid a good allowance for the first 5 years of the child’s life then that would save child care costs and result in a more stable home life surely without other people helping to raise your kid.

  • @debbiemiller163
    @debbiemiller163 Před 10 dny +1

Two extremely low paid workers looking after 16??? People are saying 9 month olds are not challenging. Any child can be extremely challenging. A load of children with a low paid, possibly poorly trained and certainly emotionally unequipped person who clearly became irritated, irrational and overwhelmed. As a mother of 5 I know the feeling of being so overwhelmed and wanting to harm my child in a split second. I never did, thank god, I was emotionally well resourced, and conditioned from a calm home with no physical violence. If we want these things to stop happening we can’t keep saying these individuals are ‘evil’. That’s so simplistic, the hardest jobs in the world such as care of elderly and young children paid absolute pittance. It’s hugely stressful and challenging work which requires resources of patience and emotional intelligence that are not available to everyone especially those who have themselves come from violent and/or chaotic and abusive backgrounds. We react under stress in the ways we have been shown and modelled.
If we want change as a society though we need more intelligent and compassionate analysis of why these things happen. It’s natural to feel so angry and helpless at such a powerfully terrible thing happening but we should be evolving past the point of just wanting to hurt and punish those who do these things and find a way to stop the deaths of young children. They are more at risk of being killed when under one years old and currently one child every week in the U.K. is killed at the hands of their carers (mostly parents) too simplistic to say they are all evil.
My prayers are with these poor parents and may the innocent sweet girl rest in peace .

I’m totally aghast at this story, how can a 9mth old be too hard to handle. When I heard this story today the 1st thing I did was ring my daughter who has worked in child daycare for 14yrs and asked her how can things like this happen. She told me there were so many guidelines not followed in this nursery for a start. No baby should ever be left unattended on a beanbag, bouncer etc. She listed load of errors in this case, baby been put facedown strapped unto a beanbag, no one checking on this child at very regular intervals etc. She went on and on. Surely if you think a 9mth old is too much “hard work” you’re in the wrong job. Maybe you’re having an off day and the child needs bit more attention ask another member of staff to take over. Please anyone in this job that feels like it’s hard work, leave the job. At end of day this job is not a job, it’s a dedication. You have to enjoy it. No family should ever go through this nightmare EVER. Does my daughter enjoy her job everyday, no she doesn’t but 99% of time she loves it. But even on day she’s not feeling it r it feels too much she knows she’s going home in lot of hours, she’ll ask for help or will take a minute to herself and then go back again.

Nice attempt at victim blaming there oh holier than thou ! It isn’t as black and white as that, some parents, some mums and dads have to go back to work whilst their children are very young, otherwise who exactly is funding yours and your children’s lifestyle. Some parents don’t have the luxury of having family members or trusted friends close by who can take care of their children either.
If you are paying for professional childcare and a professional nursery, then they have a duty of care exactly the same as schools and school teachers do too. Did you never put your kids through school then either, children start school age 4, so it is almost the same situation. We have to trust the professionals we entrust to do their job properly !
Instead of victim blaming the mother here, try applying or illiciting some common sense to the situation and to the very people (the nursery) who so drastically failed this child and this family. Not the parents fault !

      A hard working husband.
How do you think we got this far in human history? I suggest the wrong people are having babies, probably the likes of you by the sound of things.

I see you failed to say how those mums AND DADS should pay their mortgage, bills and other costs and stay with their children at home 24 hours a day.

Why is nobody asking why a 9 month old baby is at a nursery instead of with its mother?

Maybe because people have to work to pay bills?

@@mrspaghetti7461 Such as the nursery bill? - No excuse for neglect of a mother's primary duty which is to her child. 9 months is FAR too young to be seperated from the mother, it is still at breast-feeding age, and children seperated from their natural mothers at such an early age grow up with personality disorders involving lack of empathy and inability to bond.
It could be said that a woman who is unwilling to nurse her own child (at whatsoever sacrifice) is herself a damaged person, unfit for motherhood and should have used contraceptives.
