  • Nursery worker Kate Roughley has been jailed for 14 years after being found guilty of the manslaughter of baby Genevieve Meehan in Greater Manchester.
    Sentencing her, Mrs Justice Ellenbogen in Manchester Crown Court told her: “You have been convicted by a jury of unlawful act manslaughter and I must now sentence you for that crime."
    The 37-year-old swaddled the nine-month-old, strapped her face down on a bean bag and left her for an hour-and-a-half.
    Roughley was caring for Genevieve in her role as deputy manager and 'baby room leader' at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, in May 2022.
    Watch the full sentencing remarks from the judge above.

    Fourteen years is not good enough for taking an innocent baby's life. Why was she not charged with murder? This was clearly premeditated. This horrible woman only went back to Genevieve when she was sure she was deceased or very nearly. The words Roughly used clearly show this monster hated her and couldn't be bothered to do her job properly. If she hated children so much she should have got a job in tesco. Justice has not been served for Genevieve and her heartbroken family.

      This is an ignorant comment. It was not premediated. SHe was not found as having left the baby in order so that she would die. Her actions mounted to death yes, for which she has been found guilty and sentenced under that and the judge has just outlined ALL the reasons why she came to her final decisions, weighing up the gravity of the offence and all other mitigating circumstances. Why listen to the sentencing if you disregard the verdict.

      @@chrysalis4126 she had been trained and held the post of deputy manager! The baby had clearly annoyed her, she didn’t like her and decided to punish her for not sleeping/behaving. Who in their right mind with no training would swaddle and then place the little one face down on a bean bag? It got worse…. she then harnessed her to the bean bag so that the baby girl couldn’t move and later placed a blanket over her covering her head, finally she left her distressed not checking up on her properly.

      It’s a typical result of females being treated differently in the judicial system. If this had been a bloke the sentence would’ve been higher. We’ve seen it with volunerable people in society. Old people with Alzheimer’s and dementia being thrown around and abused by so called carers. And young babies being hurt and abused by staff. No victim blaming on my behalf, but please, please, please, people….look after those you love by caring for them in the family home. I know it can be difficult and stressful, but there isn’t a job, career, or anything else which matters more than the precious people we love. Please don’t hand their care to strangers. ✌🏻💚🙏🏼

    Face down on a bean bag, swaddled and harnassed, so she was unable to move and then left there unmonitored. How was this not considered murder? A life sentence (which in the UK sadly doesn't mean a lifetime in prison) would mean whenever she was released, she could be returned to prison if she broke parole conditions. I don't agree that this woman poses no threat to society, how could anyone think that? She knew how to correctly care for children, she had formal training and 17 years of experience. She CHOSE to harm and kill this child. If anyone did the same things to an adult, I'm sure it would be considered murder.

      There should have been other staff on duty who should have picked up on her dislike of that baby & taken over her care
      Considering that the little one was only there for 8 days including the day she died, how could such an experienced child minder NOT have noticed such a distressed baby?
      She simply didn't want to do her job properly so she just trussed her up & dumped her
      I disagree with the judge regarding other staff on duty in the baby room that day, they knew what she was doing was wrong & cruel, wether or not she meant to kill, harm or just frighten a baby.
      As for her solicitor asking the judge to reduce her sentence due to prison overcrowding, that is NOT the concern of either the judge or a solicitor... Guilty of such an EVIL crime should carry a whole life sentence

    12:59 the undue leniency of this sentence must be appealed by the Prosecution in the Court of Appeal and taken all the way to the Supreme Court and House of Lords if needs be, with sentencing guidelines massively overhauled upwards by an Act of Parliament - the rights of the victim and the victim’s family have been almost totally sidelined, disregarded and ignored in this case

    • @jwillk42
      @jwillk42 Před 22 dny +1

      No way is that unduly lenient, it's for manslaughter of a person, you can't say it's unduly lenient just because you think it's worse that the person was a baby. That's not going to be successfully appealed by the prosecution, I don't think they will try.

      Well articulated. They should appeal and guidelines amended. If you take a life of a baby, which she did in her vile hatred for the baby, they should spend the rest of the child's estimated natural life in prison with no hope of parole.
