    I think the show did a great job of not portraying Martha (Fiona Harvey) as just some crazy stalker, but as someone who is mentally ill. I thought the show did a great job of not portraying Gadd as a perfect victim and showed how there was a sort of trauma bond between these characters…and that a lot of actions not only enabled, but exacerbated the situation.

      @shethingsd Před 12 dny +10

      It's really terrible how difficult it is to get police to take things seriously. I had an ex who thought he could walk back into my life 5 months after I broke up with him. He was a mess. I allowed him to stay at my house one night, but locked my bedroom door and told him he had to leave in the morning. Around 2 am, my dogs started barking and I go out to see him hanging from the ceiling fan. I pull him down and told him, "I don't want you to kill yourself, but I can't stop you. You won't kill yourself in my house though and I made him leave." Then the text messages started. The worst was he threatened to come with 4 friends and each was going to hold down a limb and take a turn at having me. He would go last. Then he would cut me from my throat to my womanhood. Of course before that he'd behead all my pets in front of me. I took it to the police. They actually laughed at me. Doesn't help that I'm a foreigner in the country where I live and he has cousins on the police force and his uncle in a Supreme Court judge. He's a very popular radio personality. I told them to write everything down in the police report, including that they were laughing at me. And that I wanted a copy of the report. They told me, that costs money. I said, I know and I have the money right here. I told them, I am good friends with the Women's Department officer and if this man kills me, nobody will say that I was stupid and didn't do my part because I'm giving her a copy of this and she's instructed to release it to the media. Even though everyone knew him and he's a popular entertainer in a country of only 400,000 people, the police have yet to be able to find him to serve an order of protection against him since 2009. The harassment stopped. I'm an empowerment self defense instructor and was at the time of our split so I knew how to protect myself. It's why I'm passionate about teaching others how to protect themselves from people like my ex and Fiona. I wish everyone safety.

    Note that commentators feel it’s acceptable to attribute some of the blame for this situation to Richard Gadd. If you flip the roles and it was a man stalking a woman I can guarantee nobody would blame the woman at all (as they shouldn’t). He may be flawed and have made mistakes but none of that is relevant once somebody crosses the line into the realms of harassment / stalking. Otherwise the message becomes that it’s not so bad to stalk and harass someone if they have made some mistakes / have some flaws. Just pointing out an interesting double standard that the show has revealed.

There does not seem to be any evidence that the scene in the TV series where she is telling a man in the pub that Richard is not funny, so he retaliated by bringing up her history of abuse, so she hit him with a beer mug and goes to jail for nine months for assault.
