Mandi, Arabian Special Fish and Al Fahm at Barkaas Arabic Restaurant (Voiceover Review)

There are about two proper Mandi serving places in Kolkata and having tried Al Luqma, I wanted to try the other one i.e. Barkaas.
Firstly the ambiance is beautiful and very clean. You can opt for either the table-chair arrangement or sit on these individual areas with “Chowkis” on which food is usually served in Arabian countries.
Let’s come to the food.
Before I start, I must talk about how excellent the garlic dip is - sweet and pungent with a kick of raw garlic in it! I could have the dip on it’s own- infact, I did do that.
Appetizers:
• Al Fahm Rs.299, Taste 4.25/5: Mildy spiced arabic grilled chicken is what this beauty is! It was heavenly. Charcoal grilled to perfection and so delicious with arabian spice mix of al fahm like Coriander seeds, Fennel seeds, Cumin seeds, black peppercorn, whole cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon and each and every component amalgamates beautifully. The underlying smokey flavour was what elevated the dish to another level. However, The chicken could have been a bit more juicy given to the fact that the flesh from the breast portion was a bit tough to chew on.
• Arabian Special Fish Rs.379, Taste 4.5/5: I loved this one. A slab of basa beautifully seasoned with mild spices, crumb coated and deep fried to this golden beauty. It was juicy, crispy and so good! Best to try out this one at the restaurant itself instead of ordering it.
• Chicken Jaffrani Kebab Rs.329 (4pcs), Taste 4/5: Chicken leg pieces stuffed with minced mutton and tandoored really well. The tones of ginger and garlic were strong but well balanced. However, the mutton keema inside was again a bit more dry than I’d like.
• Murgh Shorba Rs.149, Taste 2/5: I dont know what but something was so off about this one. The flavours did not hit the spot. Very average. Can be skipped.
• Mutton Juicy Mandi [Single] Rs.399, Taste 4.25/5: Mandi is a dish having its roots in Yemen. It typically consists of Meat and rice cooked with a mild blend of spices and served with dips.
Mandi differs from biryani not only in spices but also in the way it’s cooked and served i.e. the meat is cooked separately and then piled on top of the rice before serving. It also is milder than biryani.
The mandi here was very nice with beautifully cooked fluffy rice and very tender fall-off-the-bone mutton! The mutton broth served was pretty good but wasn’t a fan of the orange coloured broth. Most mandi places I have dined in serve either garlic dip or mayonnaise along with mandi but they missed that here.
• Chicken Butter Fry Mandi [Single] Rs.349, Taste 4/5: The rice and the other components were the same as the mutton mandi. The only difference was that a portion of bite sized chicken was served instead of mutton. The chicken was nice soft and juicy.
• Kunafa Rs.159, Taste 1.5/5: Having it’s roots in Nablus, Kunafa is basically a cheesy and flaky sweet dish! It has two crusts of very fine fried seviyaa and is baked in butter till crispy and sandwiched between the layers is mozzarella. The concoction in then doused in sugar syrup and finally Topped with crushed pistachios. The one here was disheartening to say the least. It was a milky pudding with crispy vermicelli on top. In Kolkata, the best Kunafa I have had till now is at Al luqma, the other mandi serving place.
• Kaddu Ki kheer with Icecream Rs.239, Taste 2.5/5: More than Pumpkin kheer this tasted like Basundi. It wasn’t bad but it wasnt as per my expectations either.
• Shahi Tukda Rs.149, Taste 3/5: This one was better than the Kunafa and Kaddu ki kheer even though I have had better.
When comparing Al Luqma and Barkaas, The appetizers are better at Barkaas. The mandis are at par. The kunafa is by far the best at Al luqma. So yes, you can try both of these places out.
