- Greetings Earthlings, I hope you are all well.
The next couple of songs are a little less pop and more introspective. So put your trays in the upright position and fasten your safety belts.
Black Dog is about depression. Even the great war time leader, Winston Churchill suffered with bouts which he called his Black Dog. Churchill was a man of drive and intellect. If he could suffer with depression then anyone can.
It’s being talked about more these days, but mental health is still a difficult subject to discuss.
I remember when we lived in London; we once went on a Sunday drive and ended up at Beachy Head. While we were there, a lady tried to throw herself off the cliff. Belinda and I, and a number of other by passers stopped her and physically blocked her path to the cliff edge. She kept trying to jump and we eventually had to hold her down. Someone called the police and they took her away to seek help. I was shocked and very distressed that someone was so unhappy that they would consider this their only way out.
Personally if I have lots of spare time on my hands with nothing much to do, I get the blues. Is the blues the musician’s word for depression? My solution is to keep busy and that seems to work for me. I get the blues in the winter, when the days are shorter and the sun hides away (in England anyway). It’s been called seasonal affective disorder or SAD. Luckily, when spring comes and the weather improves, so does my mood.
How do I end this? I guess my message is that we all have the capability to have a bad day or feel down. Even those people that we generally consider happy. Sometimes that is just an act. Please don’t be afraid to discuss your feelings with your friends. If you know someone who seems to be struggling then you start the conversation. Ask how they are, and maybe share something personal to break the ice and make it ok for them to open up.

Lyrics
Black dog is here with me again
He knows just where to find
The string that holds my mind in place
And he pulls the string until its tight
Then he cuts it all away
To him it’s just a game
And he has fun
Standing by my side
While the fire burns inside
Black dog comes around when he wants to
I’ve never seen him smile
He knows what’s in my file
And he pulls the string until it breaks
Then he’s happy all day long
That I put him in my song
And he has fun
Standing by my side
While the fire burns inside
The days are getting shorter
And the nights are growing long
As autumn turns to winter
It gets harder to hold on
I know I’ve got to understand before salvation comes
Black dog comes to me in dead of night
When I’m lying wide awake
He comes to me and speaks
And he is reinforcing doubts I can escape
I try to move along
But the cycle just goes on
And he has fun
Standing by my side
While the fire burns inside
I’m sorry that I hurt you
I really need your help
It’s like looking in a mirror
And seeing someone else
I know I’ve got to understand before salvation comes
How far can you bend before you break
When you hold it all inside
And your weakness is your pride
Gravity will always pull you down
And you know there’s no escape
But you hope it’s not too late
And he was there
Standing by my side
When the fire died
And he was there
Standing by my side
When the fire died
