I'm Spanish and we were never taught about him (i didn't even know about his existence) or anything more than 'yeah so these boats set sail and a lot of people died and then Magallan died and Elcano was the captain and went back to Spain and there were some colonization attempts and massacres and battles in between"

here's something to understand why we filipinos aren't into this film.
colonizers invaded our country and burned every semblance of our culture and history, made themselves at home, and put us through 500+ years of pain. because of them, we know little of our original language, forcing us to learn the english alphabet and inserting bits and pieces of their own language for us to use. and that's the least most damning thing they did.
now they're trying to glorify those people who started the whole mess, acting as if they're doing us a favor by making this film in the first place.
TLDR, this is pocahontas all over again. if any of you want an actually interesting show that features filipino characters and filipino culture, try Trese. it's an anime, and we filipinos love it a lot, give it a try.
Not only the show, but the original Trese books should also be recommended to anyone interested!
Just wanted to correct you on the 500+ years of oppression. It was only 333 years or so, but your point still stands. Filipinos were put below the Spaniards and eradicated our culture and history.
To be fair this is a Spanish film so I’m not sure why you thought Filipinos would like it.

The best takeaway I've gotten from this video is that the first person to actually circumnavigate the whole planet turned out to be a slave who, in the end, not only got to witness his slaver get absolutely annihilated by Lapu-Lapu, but also got to go home.
God, I hope Enrique lived a happy life.
Honestly the story would have been infinitely more interesting from Enrique's perspective.
as a filipino i have watched many plays that depict this particular part of our history, if i remember correctly. houses before did not have locks because we respected each other's belongings and that woman are treated equally, so when the Spaniards set fire to the houses. if i remember correctly Lapu-lapu said that they were cowards to battle at night when the enemies were sleeping and instead shouldve challenged and fought them at broad day light to show some balls.

Honestly, some people might say that us Filipinos are being exaggerated to our outrage, but one can't help but be angry when the hero that fought for our country be portrayed this way.
Not saying that Filipinos were the only one colonized, but I'm sure many will sympathise if their own heroes come off as a villain. And as a quote that I remember, in different perspectives of the victim and the attacker, you can either be the villain or the hero.
(Or maybe they're too evil that even their own countrymen doesn't approve)
Is portrayed like what? Like the guy who killed Magallanes? That's the only thing he did regarding what the film is about. This is not a film about the Philippines, but about the first circumnavigation of the world. The Philippines appears like 10 minutes max. You are outraged by actually depicting your nationalist myths about Lapu Lapu killing Magallanes.
@@goodaimshield1115Did you even watch the video? No matter how accurate or inaccurate this movie was, it’s still a blatant misrepresentation of reality sprinkled with racism
he was a hero that fought for your country as much as spainiards were heroes that fought for europe during the arab invasion or aztecs were heroes that fought for america, maybe even worse. Lapu lapu fought for himself because the spanish demanded he submit to his ally Rajah Humabon, who probably converted to christianism and allied with them precisely for that, he and the battle of mactan are stupdly romanticized. It was all a minor conflict that ultimately didn't change much since spain got most of the archipelago relatively fast anyway.
Like even saying "your people" is colonialist since at the time the philiphines was super disunited with dozens of languages and tribes and like 5 main religions, you were maybe even more diverse than the whole of europe. "Your people" is a concept that exists precisely because of the spanish colonization who united the isles, if it weren't for that you would be 12+ diferent countries. Correct me if I'm wrong but you couldn't even agree to wich name the philiphines should be changed because diferent langauges and ethincs had diferent views that were interpreted as racist by the others and just left it, that's how diferent you were a few decades ago after being united for centuries imagine if no colonization happened.
If you want a "hero that fought for your country" you should look at the people that fought for the independence against USA, japan and to a lesser point spain(to a lesser point because spain didn't put much of a fight since usa crushed them) not a local tribal cheiftain and warlord who managed to win a minor battle against an european expedition that had like 30 times less people than his army.
Why the hell would they try to advertise this to Filipinos by making them the villains of the movie
That's like introducing Jesus to a satanist

Looks atrocious. The Filipino outfits were not researched at all. I guess they figured one precolonial tribe of brown people looked like like any other. Also just because these were the first Europeans the Filipinos saw it doesn't mean that they were the first foreigners to the archipelago. When the Spanish arrived they noticed that the Filipinos had been trading metals, spices, pottery and other valuables from other sea trading empires like China for decades if not centuries before. And lastly Magellan died because he wanted to show off his bravado to a chief and decided to meddle in Filipino politics. His men left him to die as they watched him get massacred by Lapu Lapu's forces from the boat because by that time most of his crew was fed up with him and just wanted to go home.

KougaTintinFan Yeah. At least with Road to El Dorado, we weren’t following the story of historical characters (I mean, Cortés is in the movie, but we don’t really get to see any of his ventures, he’s just a story device for our main characters). Miguel and Tulio are completely made up, and it just so happens that the story takes place in colonial times, that’s it. It’s hard to adapt the lives of these colonizers in a kid’s movie because then you have to sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of censorship, and nobody wants that.

On another hand, we don't treat Magellan like a great man who did amazing things, most of us are aware of what he did.
I hope this movie doesn't represent us as a country.
While Filipino people have already spoken out about the movie better than I ever could, as a Spaniard I want to also make a quick note that Spanish media has had its fair share of problems dealing with our colonial legacy. A movie about the 1898 war between Spain and the US for control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba was released a few years ago and got criticized for apparently portraying our country as weak. A lot of times, criticism of Spanish colonization and the Spanish empire is dismissed as a leyenda negra, AKA a lie that the British spread because they wanted to make us look bad while excusing their own colonization. Both empires were shit, but Spain in general still can’t wrap their head around its past, both concerning colonization and events like the civil war and posterior dictatorship.

Lapu Lapu : Here's my spear
For the record, the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican clergy that accompanied the Conquistadors were VERY vocally upset at the subhuman treatment of natives (there are letters of correspondence between them and the Vatican that go in depth about the matter) but since the church began to back out of politics during the renaissance they couldn't do much since the expeditions were commissioned by the crown.
On one hand people could get pissed that the church didn't do more in spite of this, and on the other people would complain about violating the separation of church and state. It's a lose lose situation, but the church saw Evangelism as the more worthwhile pursuit in the long run. They genuinely wanted to spread the faith, not conversion under threat of violence.
As such, unlike the conquistadors, the clergy STAYED in the colonies rather than coming back to Spain once they "got their spoils". In fact, that's not only a major factor that led not only to Catholicism being dominant in Hispanic countries, but also contributed to Spanish becoming the dominant language. After all, you can't teach the faith if they don't know what's being said or written. Likewise, there are a ton of Hispanic, Latino, and Mixed-Race Saints from said nations shortly afterwards who were readily canonized regardless of race or ethnic background.
It's exactly like the time I went with my friend to his sunday school one day when I was 10.

Magellan forced one of the mutineers to execute two of the others, one of whom was his foster-brother, then had their bodies dismembered and nailed to the rigging of his ships and left them there for months. The whole story is so insanely dark it absolutely defies belief that anyone would think it was suitable material for a kid's movie.
This film is historically accurate, the Portuguese were actually goblins who evolved into humans.
As a filipino, I can confirm that the underwear part wasn't historically accurate.
I think you must have much nicer underwear in PH than standard heart-pattern boxers fresh off the stanky junk of a green man.
Yeah. Lapu Lapu wasn't even a villain at this point. He's just protecting his country since the time Spaniards had been colonized Philippines for 333 years.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 He attacked Magellan because he refused to give tribute. Why would he give tribute to a king he didn't knew? The Philippines as a state and political entity did not exist until the beginning of the Spanish period.
@@mmyr8ado.360 And the reason why Spaniard colonized the Philippines is because they wanted to seek some silver and gold as a treasure. Also, Spain established the country with Evangelism and Christianity. This is where things have changed when the Americans came to educate the Filipinos and civilized them. Americans saw those people as an influence and they're the reason why the Spanish retreated.
As a Mexican, same
*_Clash of Clans, Rapunzel, The Lord of the Rings, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Road to El Dorado, and Moana; THE CROSSOVER_*
@Nicolas wait till some one gets wooshed
And Pocahantis (I'll find the correct spelling later)
The "Christan" chief (in irl) was probably thinking of how to take care of two birds with one stick... Though he only hit one bird
Spain: hey we have jesus!
lapu lapu: bullshit
the entire movie looks like it was either made in Dreams, or is a really long cutscene in a unity game
True .
And even then I’ve seen better Dreams projects than this. I mean, just look at Elca.
This man is a POGCHAMP
Unity games are actually good
"I looked through their previous work, and nothing was familiar to me."
Fan translation: "These are more movies for me to review."
I need to see that Mystic one
6:26 I learned that the mutiny’s were because the crew thought Magellan was a little to ubseive
2:43 Of course, it could not be different, the castilians representing the villain as portuguese
Filipinos: (being mocked)
also Filipinos: you entered the shadow realm, paré
must extinguish the heresy
I'm so tired of this Pocahontas/Sacagawea trope in movies where an indigenous/native girl shows up whose only purpose is to guide the colonizers and be a love interest to one of them. Also she always has to leave her home because of course she would leave her home to go off with some random dudes instead of stay with her "savage" family.
@Ophelia Tepes they were raped and killed, stop being so delusional
I mean ya that’s how it goes
I know! How terrible that one of the natives is curious, inquisitive, and wants to explore more of the world that these newcomers have just demonstrated existed! Native people should never want anything more than to live and die in the same village their ancestors did.
I want a story where a dude whose like an impressed sailor or indentured servant (basically kinds of temporary slavery) comes to some new land and just decids fuck it. Boy meets girl, boy realizes he loves girl more than he loves Jesus, boy defects and helps the natives kick out the other Europeans out in return for being able to stay.
It might not be super historically accurate, but it think it'd make for an interesting story. Give us a grungier view of the Europeans before they even interact with the natives. Show that the life of many people in europe sucked. I mean a lot of people came to the new world looking for a better life, free from oppressive European society. And show us more of the natives and their culture. Give us more indigenous food and religion. Have some situation where the defector is being taught how to do stuff by the natives.
I mean there was at least one entire english colony that straight up joined a local tribe. So it's not too far fetched.
@@pureevil6047 I believe that's called _Avatar._
Bruh the poster really ruined it from the start for another reason: Lapu-Lapu is the native Pinoy hero, tapos you see him framed as an antagonist. THAT TELLS MOVIEGOERS NA MASAMA KAMING TAO and that's flat-out RACIST. The presence of the girl who is amicable to Elcano is being used as a crutch ng movie na "not al Filipinos are bad" PERO THAT'S A MICROAGRESSION, in a "You're pretty for a black girl" kinda way. There are good films where we are the villains of our own narrative pero this racist-ass film isn't one of them.
4:01 the fact that I loved that movie when I was younger-
I'm portuguese and I can say we also dont look like green-skin vampires
Speak for yourself, mano!
thats exactly what a green skin vampire would say
The Portuguese might not be green vampires...
Now the french...
Lies.
on tumblr, everybody called him anti-semitic when they were calling out the poster (i know the character is portugese)
Imagine making the colonizers as the good guy and wonder why people hate it.
Ikr this would have been beautiful if it took place from the filipino perspective during the invasions
How are the colonizers the bad guys? Fresh land to expand upon that the natives weren't using, fuck yeah they want that shit.
@@BlueOvals24 You actually genuinely think the natives weren't using it? You need a history lesson mate
@@suniidays They weren't gonna industrialize, waste of land just like the native Americans.
@@BlueOvals24 I don't think you can know what they were going to do, and calling a group of people a "waste of space" is pretty bigoted, and technically racist too.
The lighting in this movie reminds me of mid-late 2000's video games blowing out all the color with bloom effects.
As a filipino, I am watching this during our independence days
I swear if i ever saw this airing on GMA or ABSCBN I am smashing our TV onto our front lawn
I don't blame you, this is pure garbage.
Funny how a non-Spanish related guy is able to tell a more interesting story than a group of Spanish people...
It's sad that this part of history was taught so poorly to us
Wait until you hear about Americans history 😂
We're not really spanish. We can kinda be considered that but we could also be considered asian or pacific islander.
I see my ourselfs more as asian but it differs from diffrent people.
@@azulizachan7595 Of course it was, much of the European colonizer empires like to whitewash their horrid actions as something that was "good for the natives" and "worked out in the end" and "wasn't so bad" or some other malarky. Hell, as a USA citizen myself, our OWN CIVIL WAR has people trying to whitewash slavery and pretend like the south WASNT a rebellious little wretch trying to maintain the horrid institution of slavery. Neo confederates are like a personal taste of the kind of propaganda that European colony empires spit out, as well as the sympathizers.
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 Please don't use "European colonizer empires" to refer to colonial and imperialist aplogists, since the aformentioned quote refers to a government and most modern governments are open with the attrocities commited in their education, aka not whitewashing history, like the "and the natives happily moved away so the peaceful settlers could build a new home" that was(I think it isn't anymore...I hope so) in old Canadian history books.
I am Portuguese and we learn how we started the transatlantic slave trade and how we transported thousands upon thousands of African slaves to our colonies in "Negreiros", ships where slaves were stored like cargo, piled one over the other, in a inhumane way.
I'm quite confident the US also teaches how the CSA rebelled to keep their barbarous slave practices, since...ahem, the USA is the victor of that story and why would they beatify the CSA? Again, the biased apologists being the problem.
As a Filipino myself this movie just makes me go “oh god no”
Oh god no indeed
My Pinoy, why you acting like you care?
Oh Gordon Ramsey no no no no-
Lmao same
same omg oh god
Off brand Flyn made me think this was gonna be a Tangled clone- but no, it's even worse
When I saw Mummy I’m a Zombie I gasped so loud
The spanish: Here's Jesus❤
Lapu-Lapu: No❤
According to my Filipino friend, he straight up lopped off his head apparently.
I think that some just about everyone's reaction to door-to-door missionaries
@@Aodhan_Raith So he did it similar to how David defeated Goliath. Once he's dead, his head was cut off as proof.
Except that's not why they fought. Lapu Lapu was a pirate. His brother-in-law was asking Magellan to help him against Lapu Lapu. Both sides are just bad at trying to glorify these 2. They're both horrible.
@@Aodhan_Raith Not sure about that, Lapu-Lapu didn't personally kill Magellan, his warriors did. (I'm Filipino)
I (Spaniard) convinced my best friend (Filipina) to watch this movie together, we were both outraged but still had a good laugh. If this wreck of a movie didn't destroy our friendship, then nothing will.
Anime was right about friendship or something
good power to you, glad to hear some if not a lot of spanish who are in the filipino side in terms of justice
What an amazing friendship, I hope it lasts long!
In some weird way, maybe some of the animators and directors for this movie intended for some cross dialogue between two separate cultures to come about. It’s just…the way that’s panned out maybe wasn’t exactly how they intended. Oh, there’s gonna be a cross cultural dialogue about this movie alright.
What if one of you sleeps with the others significant other
after i watch the movie El Cano and Magellan, i cried.. they portray Magellan as a hero who sacrifice himself and left behind to save his men while Lapu Lapu cowardly throw a spear at him in the leg and he approach the dying magellan, ganging up on him while he was alone and they cowardly butchered him like a savage animal! in real life, Lapu Lapu protected his people and his families. without Lapu Lapu, many filipinos would not had been born and he did what he had to do so that our generation lives! Lapu Lapu is no coward who throws spear at your back, he was a national hero who protected his descendants, us filipinos!! 😡😡
Thanks so much for this 42-minute long history class, I laughed so much over gruesome historical events
