here's something to understand why we filipinos aren't into this film.
colonizers invaded our country and burned every semblance of our culture and history, made themselves at home, and put us through 500+ years of pain. because of them, we know little of our original language, forcing us to learn the english alphabet and inserting bits and pieces of their own language for us to use. and that's the least most damning thing they did.
now they're trying to glorify those people who started the whole mess, acting as if they're doing us a favor by making this film in the first place.
TLDR, this is pocahontas all over again. if any of you want an actually interesting show that features filipino characters and filipino culture, try Trese. it's an anime, and we filipinos love it a lot, give it a try.

Not saying that Filipinos were the only one colonized, but I'm sure many will sympathise if their own heroes come off as a villain. And as a quote that I remember, in different perspectives of the victim and the attacker, you can either be the villain or the hero.

he was a hero that fought for your country as much as spainiards were heroes that fought for europe during the arab invasion or aztecs were heroes that fought for america, maybe even worse. Lapu lapu fought for himself because the spanish demanded he submit to his ally Rajah Humabon, who probably converted to christianism and allied with them precisely for that, he and the battle of mactan are stupdly romanticized. It was all a minor conflict that ultimately didn't change much since spain got most of the archipelago relatively fast anyway.
Like even saying "your people" is colonialist since at the time the philiphines was super disunited with dozens of languages and tribes and like 5 main religions, you were maybe even more diverse than the whole of europe. "Your people" is a concept that exists precisely because of the spanish colonization who united the isles, if it weren't for that you would be 12+ diferent countries. Correct me if I'm wrong but you couldn't even agree to wich name the philiphines should be changed because diferent langauges and ethincs had diferent views that were interpreted as racist by the others and just left it, that's how diferent you were a few decades ago after being united for centuries imagine if no colonization happened.
If you want a "hero that fought for your country" you should look at the people that fought for the independence against USA, japan and to a lesser point spain(to a lesser point because spain didn't put much of a fight since usa crushed them) not a local tribal cheiftain and warlord who managed to win a minor battle against an european expedition that had like 30 times less people than his army.

Looks atrocious. The Filipino outfits were not researched at all. I guess they figured one precolonial tribe of brown people looked like like any other. Also just because these were the first Europeans the Filipinos saw it doesn't mean that they were the first foreigners to the archipelago. When the Spanish arrived they noticed that the Filipinos had been trading metals, spices, pottery and other valuables from other sea trading empires like China for decades if not centuries before. And lastly Magellan died because he wanted to show off his bravado to a chief and decided to meddle in Filipino politics. His men left him to die as they watched him get massacred by Lapu Lapu's forces from the boat because by that time most of his crew was fed up with him and just wanted to go home.

At least with Road to El Dorado, we weren’t following the story of historical characters (I mean, Cortés is in the movie, but we don’t really get to see any of his ventures, he’s just a story device for our main characters). Miguel and Tulio are completely made up, and it just so happens that the story takes place in colonial times, that’s it. It’s hard to adapt the lives of these colonizers in a kid’s movie because then you have to sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of censorship, and nobody wants that.

A movie about the 1898 war between Spain and the US for control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba was released a few years ago and got criticized for apparently portraying our country as weak. A lot of times, criticism of Spanish colonization and the Spanish empire is dismissed as a leyenda negra, AKA a lie that the British spread because they wanted to make us look bad while excusing their own colonization. Both empires were shit, but Spain in general still can’t wrap their head around its past, both concerning colonization and events like the civil war and posterior dictatorship.

For the record, the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican clergy that accompanied the Conquistadors were VERY vocally upset at the subhuman treatment of natives (there are letters of correspondence between them and the Vatican that go in depth about the matter) but since the church began to back out of politics during the renaissance they couldn't do much since the expeditions were commissioned by the crown.
On one hand people could get pissed that the church didn't do more in spite of this, and on the other people would complain about violating the separation of church and state. It's a lose lose situation, but the church saw Evangelism as the more worthwhile pursuit in the long run. They genuinely wanted to spread the faith, not conversion under threat of violence.
As such, unlike the conquistadors, the clergy STAYED in the colonies rather than coming back to Spain once they "got their spoils". In fact, that's not only a major factor that led not only to Catholicism being dominant in Hispanic countries, but also contributed to Spanish becoming the dominant language. After all, you can't teach the faith if they don't know what's being said or written. Likewise, there are a ton of Hispanic, Latino, and Mixed-Race Saints from said nations shortly afterwards who were readily canonized regardless of race or ethnic background.

Boy meets girl, boy realizes he loves girl more than he loves Jesus, boy defects and helps the natives kick out the other Europeans out in return for being able to stay.
It might not be super historically accurate, but it think it'd make for an interesting story. Give us a grungier view of the Europeans before they even interact with the natives. Show that the life of many people in europe sucked. I mean a lot of people came to the new world looking for a better life, free from oppressive European society. And show us more of the natives and their culture. Give us more indigenous food and religion. Have some situation where the defector is being taught how to do stuff by the natives.
I mean there was at least one entire english colony that straight up joined a local tribe. So it's not too far fetched.
