I'm extremely religious but I know you have a primarily secular audience. I love your critique on Christian media because it can be so poor quality we really need more content like OG Veggietales and The Chosen they are good shows and that's what Christian media should strive to be so good that even secular audiences will enjoy it.
Oh, I don't think I've heard of The Chosen! What's that about?
It’s a show about Jesus and his disciples. Even as an atheist, I liked the few episodes I watched.
This is the literal greatest documentary that I have ever seen on not only Veggie Tales, but Phil himself as well on CZcams. I grew up with Veggie Tales literally from my earliest days as the youngest child, but I never knew the full story behind it's fall and holy crap is it truly devastating, I nearly got emotional over it all, now knowing everything Phil went through. Every bit of time and effort shows throughout this video and I watched it from start to finish. Also, just subscribed as well, so happy I came across your channel!
Phil failed for one main reason: he just wasn't a great businessman. He's a dreamer and an artist. He needed someone savvy to run the business side who believed in him and his vision. Many of his choices were just poorly thought out. That said, he did make something unique and exceptional that touched a lot of people and in the end that's the best an artist can hope for.
Honestly, this. You have to be humble enough to know where you need help
In that sense, he really wasn't a failure.
That's what he said: Beware of your dreams. If you want to make your dreams come true, you should be careful what you wished for. Phil might be the most creative Christian has to offer, but businesses can be rather complicated for him.

I think the biggest strength about VeggieTales was that it taught morals more so than religion. Sure, the stories were mostly based on or inspired by Bible stories, and they quoted scripture and had their "God made you special" send-off, but the morals were "don't lie," "be kind to everyone," or "material possessions won't make you happy," and I think that's what really made it a show that everyone, even non-Christians, could enjoy.

@@nettieharris it was based on telling biblical tales I think
Veggie tales was based on bible stories, learning basic memory verses, and moral lessons for children (share, don't lie, be kind-things you get from other children or preschool shows) being secular removes half of the content that made it what it was, but if done right may work. But really, it was what is who are no longer practicing or left the church remember. Many remember it fondly from what i know. And even if we don't believe anymore or have different views from the church we grew up in, remember this show as a joy. Veggie tales appealed to a secular audience because it wasn’t just a show about religion, it was a really good show, that happened to be about religion. Most religious shows put the religion first, and then the show, and just come off feeling like a weird propaganda. Veggie tales takes religion as a part of their show, but not the whole thing. They added a substance to their show that went beyond the religious aspects. Veggie tales wouldn’t be the same show if it wasn’t about religion, but there is so, so much more to it than religion that it can still stand on its own. That is a rare thing in Christian media.

There are 2.4 billion Christians in the world. And billions belonging to other religions. Don’t let a couple bad dozen people you see dictate how you view a religion that billions belong to, however I can understand your position
I'm not gonna lie, I'm Catholic (it's basically the same thing as Christianity just with a few changes here and there), and yeah, I really am starting to notice some of the hypocrisies in religion. My parents are really devout Catholic (never going a day without mentioning the big Guy in the sky) and when I was little, I didn't really believe them when they said Catholics are NOT always perfect, and have done really messed up stuff in the past. Again, I was really little at the time.
Obviously nowadays, I've grown up a little and I now understand what they meant. And I gotta say, I have mad respect for the religious people out there who actually try to give the religion a good name. To not think that they own the world or whatever because of their beliefs. They don't abuse the power of religion to do whatever they want. And as a Catholic, I sometimes wonder to myself, isn't the entire point of believing in God loving everyone else, regardless of their background. You can be friends with an atheist, jew, Buddhist, etc. and it would be totally cool. If everyone truly felt the love and compassion Christianity is supposed to exhibit rather than be super toxic about it?
In short, I may not be the biggest fan of my being Catholic, but maybe down the road something will work out in the end. And watching this video kind of gives me some hope that maybe no matter bad things get, you might get something out of it. It may not be bad or even good. It could be terrible. But as long as it leaves an impact on you, and you try to own up to it, all I have to say to that is: God, you sir definitely have a weird but interesting way of making things work.
Sorry for the rambling, but I just wanted to get that off my chest. I really should start re watching Veggietales. Saber wasn't kidding when he said this video would be big. Worth the wait!
So much work, effort, and generosity was put into this show from the beginning!
Literally didn’t even know veggietales was Christian. I just enjoyed it as a kid and it was something my parents didn’t mind. Honestly, veggietales was ahead of its time

Removing a big part of anything leads to ruin. You practically have to go back to the drawing board, not go "well, this was successful before, if we reboot it now with a big chunk taken out we expect it to be more than the success of the previous work!". All those parts influence each other to make the formula .
It’s amazing when you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy something aimed at Christians. That’s the mark of a good storyteller.
You got that right!
I'm an atheist/anti-theist and yet I regularly listen to Christian metal bands like Becoming the Archetype, With Blood Comes Cleansing, The Devil Wears Prada, Blood of the Martyrs, and I the Breather. Can't deny well-written music even when the lyrics are kinda cringe :)
@@katyungodly sadly a lot of Christian bands that us Christians listen too aren't very good and are usually like "Oh we're christian and we sing about God what do you not like us singing about God?" Whenever there's any criticism. It sucks that there are better ones out there who don't get recognized.
I grew up raised in church and im agnostic and 28 now but I still catch myself looking up "his cheeseburger" at least once a month
you pretty much just summed up christian rock and metal for me lol
Growing up in a religious household Veggie Tales was the most watched VHS in my home. I'm no longer religious but I still deeply love Veggie Tales and quote it all the time. The humor, kindness, music, and life lessons were just too good. I also had the Veggie Tales computer game and played that all the time. Barbara Manatee forever.
During the video the mention of divorce was something in the show business called “foreshadowing”
I always liked veggietales because their lessons for kids weren't "god will make everything okay" they had actual lessons important for kids like treating others the way you want to be treated, and doing what's right even when it's hard. Really incredible
They taught the Bible, in a simple way for kids. I loved the show growing up, I think it really did put the God is always with you in my heart.

I wish I was back in 2004 playing VeggieTales Flash games again 😭😭
As someone who watched VeggieTales ever since "A Very Silly Sing-Along" (which was the first VeggieTales tape I ever watched), this was absolutely amazing! So much time and effort put into this documentary! I had all the tapes except for some of the newer stuff from the 2010s, but I still love the show tbh! Never gets old!😁👌
Veggytails preached love, never hate. That is what made it a ground breaking Christian show because it didn't discriminate it simply told about love.
It’s interesting and a little sad that this show is notable for having those traits. Isn’t that what Christianity is supposed to be all about? Amazing how rare those kind of messages and a general loving message with lack of judgement are in the rest of Christian media.
@@AlbinoAxolotl to me God's words are subjective. God told the people to love everyone. The people who hate are not following God's rules.
@@Rubber_duckie_floating jesus said to love as I have loved you, to his disciples. That kind of love is crazy powerful, he died for people that he created, some that didn't even accept him. But also remember he said there is no other way into heaven but through me, so not only do you have to love people, you also have to let them know how to be saved.
@@Rubber_duckie_floating I wouldn't say his words are subjective, there very objective, just people take it out of context or misinterpreted them. But I do agree that alot of churches want to call people sinners, knowing their righteousness is like filthy rags, and not focus on getting the word of God and all his teachings in them.

I agree, not many people are like that.
I'm an hardcore atheist who grew up in a hardcore evangelical church I see religion as a cult but as a kid veggie tales was the only good memory I have of church and I have to completely agree with you.
Oh, don't worry, I'm sure there is a TON of idiots who get lucky with good ideas, rely on handouts to keep barely afloat and then screw everything up for everybody else while somehow keeping the fake persona of 'poor wittle huwt genius uWu'. Quite a lot of them get to milk it for money when people forget they're screw-ups too!
As a parent, I loved VeggieTales. A lot of Christian kids' "entertainment" is just ... bad. The people making it may have had good intentions, but the moral is about as subtle as a chainsaw, and it's almost like they regard humor as detracting from the message. VeggieTales, in contrast, wasn't afraid of being funny, so it was genuinely enjoyable for kids and adults both; the moral was still there, but it wasn't sledgehammered into your skull. The beginning of the end, I think, was when they allowed the No Fun Brigade to bully them into changing one of the songs (The Bunny Song) because the NFB thought some of the lyrics were disrespectful (it was sung by the guy playing Nebuchadnezzar, so being disrespectful was kind of the point; he wasn't supposed to be a good guy, he just had a great song).
I still sing “Oh where is my hairbrush” when I lose my hairbrush.
I do, too! 😂😂

Something about a show called “veggietales” having two fruits as the MCs is beautiful
2:39 To be fair Bibleman was supposed to be corny, it was referencing the old Batman show, and, they even made fun of themselves in an episode. Bibleman was talking about a villain and said something like "He's a dirty villain who hides in the shadows, and he's cheap, just like our producers" as everyone looks at the camera.
Yeah bibleman ws amazing for all the 'wrong' reasons.
I also remember a running gag in one episode where they point out their reusing an old villain with a new coat of paint, and it culminates in a genuinely badass one-liner during a lightsaber duel that I've never forgotten: "for a guy who's reinvented himself, you sure don't fight any better".
@@Double-R-Nothing " during a lightsaber duel that I've never forgotten" That one line made me realize that I know Bibleman and have seen at least 2 VHS tapes of it when I was being babysat by one of my mom's friends back in the early 2000's...
