Gary was speaking from experience. Teams knew they could physically bully Arsenal in the centre of the pitch and if you successfully did it during the game, Arsenal would be there for the taking. Arsene Wenger truly believed that if he had enough ball players, his team could out-pass their opponents. That's the belief Henry mentioned. And even when results showed the players he trusted to do that either wasn't good enough or couldn't do it for whatever reason, he still persisted. That is the arrogance that Gary was talking about.

Well said. That's exactly what it was. Soft players in the middle of the pitch were bullied. It's all nice when it does work out and passing is flawless but once it doesn't other teams could smell the blood. I believe we are still paying for Wenger's arrogance. Losing players every year and blaming the stadium was just a way to justify not spending any money. Partey looks soft not to mention the rest of our midfielders. We need a strong physical presence in the middle of the park.

Yes, the second half of Wenger(post 07) was full of technical players with no physicality. And this is what the current Arsenal team built by Arteta scares me.The current team is also full of technical players but the team is not strong enough physically. We have seen this team being outmuscled by opponents on several occasions this season.
I hope Arteta addresses this situation in the 23/24 transfer window. If we want to challenge City and win the title, we need to add physical monsters(with good technique) in this team.

    • @WangPaste
      @WangPaste Před 11 měsíci

I noticed something from the Emirates on Sunday !!
It was the awful look of the faded red seats in the stands !!
That ground looks 50 years older than it actually is !!
The amount of money they spend per year in wages and can't replace faded seats that make the stadium look terrible !!
The seats in Highbury didn't look half as bad as that when it was demolished !!
It costs a couple of pounds per seat in a football stadium the size of Emirates.
      60,000 x £10 per seat including fitting would cost £600,000 ?????
That's less than a months wage to Gabriel Jesús.
Do you honestly think Man City's owners would allow plastic seating to fade that way and leave it looking old and tatty ?
And City do not even actually own the stadium, it's on 250 lease !!
Arsenal didn't move into Emirates until 2006, Man City moved into Etihad in 2003 and their Stadium was used for the 2002 commonwealth games the year before.
That Stadium is a representation of the club to the world. The photos, tours, television coverage etc all have the world's eyes on that structure to display the club to the whole world.
And the seats are faded all different drained shades of red?
A club of Arsenals size should easily be able to afford to replace the entire 60,000+ seats every single summer to keep that stadium looking at its best !!
Minor details make massive difference !!
City don't only develop the squad, the backroom staff, the academy, the training ground, the stadium, the sponsors etc !!
They spend fortunes every year identifying ANY areas within the clubs infrastructure and global marketing and research everything the best clubs in the world are doing to improve, strategize their plan and immediately take action to better the competition in every single area from restaurants, to match day programmes, to safe standing, to club tv, to interviews, to facilities, to stewarding, to hospitality, to dressing rooms, training grounds, coaches, playing staff through every age group, education for youth players, female sides, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING !!
It's that attention to detail that is bringing the club success, they do not stand still or rest on their laurels, they want to grow, to sustain success, to be the best in all areas not just on the field but throughout the whole club !!
Maybe 10-12 years ago when City were initially sold to Thaksin Shinawatra and then the Abu Dhabi United Group, players wanted to come for financial reasons solely but not anymore, they want to come now because we offer the best there is to offer in every single department and if there's better anywhere, we address it and up our standards to surpass them time and time again.

As much as I hate Gary Neville and love AW, Gary is very much right here. Building stadium and not having funds to buy star players(the 40-50m kinds during that time) is one thing, but buying wrong profiles again and again, not addressing weak areas is different thing.
We were crying for a top GK during 07-10 era, a DMF during 11-14, a prolific striker(partner or replacement of Giroud) during 14-17 but none of these positions were addressed.
If that squad with Sanchez, Cazorla and Ozil had a prolific striker, Arsenal would have become champions at least once.
Wenger always says that he was not given money but during his later years, he was given money and he used to waste it on average players like Mustafi, Lucas Perez, Chambers, Asano, Park Chu Young, Welbeck. I can never understand these signings.

Gary making valid points that Arsenal fans don't like to agree with because they can't question Wenger. There are so many good players he spotted who ended up going elsewhere while we ended up signing below average players. Yes, they say there was no money because of the stadium, but let's not forget that players weren't that expensive back then. Also, signing players and converting them to play in different positions.
The problem with letting other teams improve while you're not improving is that it becomes very difficult to catch up. Just see how Manchester City have invested their way into being miles ahead of everyone else in the Premier League. Catching up and going past them will be very difficult.

We’re defensively weak, I don’t think Gabriel’s composed enough to lead from the back. Would a strong technical DM help? Certainly. But it’s more about getting a good and experienced replacement for Holding at the back. Gabriel needs competition and Kiwior’s young.

Before you start any project, a club should invest in a world class manager that they actually trust and will stand with him when results are not going their way! Chelsea has been good at investing in good manager/world class but they lack patience that’s why they’ve never had a period of sustained dominance like we’ve seen with Man United or Man City currently. You made a fair point but if you also want my honest opinion, City weren't anywhere near their best until the New Year and was already quite a way behind at that point, Liverpool have been completely hit and miss all season and have been nowhere near their best, Chelsea have been a shambles but will be much better next season under Pochettino, I expect Newcastle and Tottenham to improve, Man United will be better after another transfer window under Ten Hag and I know that Man City will also be better from the off now Haaland has settled in properly and knows how to play his role in the team.
Arsenal have had a brilliant season but given the position they were in, they really should have won the league and I can't accept any excuses of inexperience, young squad or anything else I'm afraid !!
Leicester were inexperienced when they won the league, nobody in their squad, nor their management team had won the Premier League before but they kept at it until the end grinding out results and they'd not spent anywhere near what Arsenal have spent.
Mikel Arteta has been Guardiolas assistant manager and played a part in winning the Premier League with City, Gabriel Jesús and Zinchenko have also been Premier League winners with City on more than one occasion !!
In fact, both won it only last year !!
Mikel Arteta, Gabriel Jesús and Oleksandr Zinchenko ALL know what it takes to win the league and they ALL know how Pep Guardiola sets his team out, what he expects from each individual and how City approach games towards the end of the season.
Here's Arsenals mistakes as I see it :
      1) Arteta, the Chairman and Board of Arsenal ALL knew that they were in a great position at the beginning of January and had the duration of the World Cup in December to identify realistic targets that would strengthen the depth of their squad in the January transfer window but they failed to sign anyone that would help to see them over the line and also had the opportunity of signing Mykhalo Mudryk prior to Chelsea signing him and wouldn't pay the money !!
      2) Arsenal gave us (Man City) far too much respect home and away and we're noticably frightened of taking us on and having an all out battle (To be Champions of the Premier League you cannot fear the reigning Champions of the previous year and fall apart when you play them)
      3) When Arteta signed Jesús and Zinchenko from Man City last summer, he surely must have been aware of Roméo Lavia who City sold to Southampton for £10.5m and he would have provided some much needed strength and power into Arsenals squad (Absolutely gobsmacked that Arsenal didn't come in for Lavia as Arteta would certainly have known about him)
      4) Arsenal seemingly self exited from the cup competitions in order to give themselves the best possible chance of being Premier League Champions (That is not the mentality of winners, that's the mentality of chancers)
      5) Arsenal clearly needed some grit in their side, some presence, some experience and some hard working physically strong players in my opinion (Why weren't Arsenal in for Casemiro? Why weren't they in for Lavia last summer? Why did they fail to sign Mudryk when it was almost nailed on? Why weren't they in for Sterling? Sadio Mané or Cancelo?
Had Arsenal signed Casemiro, Mudryk, Lavia and Mané and had the experience of Casemiro, the skill of Mudryk, the physical presence and energetic youth of Lavia and the experience, goal threat and work rate of Mané then I believe that Arsenal would have won the league this year !!
Those players I mentioned we're all available, 2 of them last summer and the other 2 in January !!
Lavia cost £10.5m, Casemiro £60m with a further £10m in potential add ons and Mané was sold for £35m.
Admittedly, Mudryk at £100m may have been a little too expensive but the other 3 for a combined total of £105m would have been great business as Lavia is only 19 years old and could be worth that himself in a couple of years, Mané has won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool and Casemiros composure and experience would also have been priceless in the title run in.
If you're an Arsenal fan, you shouldn't be accepting this as a 'great season, a massive improvement or a good go at it', that's just a lame and weak, sugar coating of reality in my eyes !!
Arsenal SHOULD have won the league, they were in a fantastic position on January 1st and are a big enough club to have afforded to bring in a few physical and experienced players in January that would have added something to get Arsenal over the line !!
I wouldn't say the Arsenal players 'bottled it' or 'capitulated', they done the best they could with the players available to them but the manager and the fans should have been screaming for reinforcements and additions in January that would have made the difference and possibly crowned them as Champions !!
I can't see Arsenal getting another chance like this in the coming seasons to be honest !!

    • @hzskillz1721

@@WangPaste Your absolutely spot on, Arsenal fans should stop praising this team for finishing 2nd, it was an absolutely horrible bottle, being 8 points clear with 9 games left and all arsenal had to do is beat Liverpool, Westham and Southampton and arguably they would win the league, but they crumbled under pressure. How can you praise a team that crumbles when it matters most, I am an Arsenal fan since a while and I know Arsenal either start the premier league strong and then finish it poorly or they start the premier League poorly and never recover either finishing in top 5 or top 8, I believe next season will see Arsenal back to number 5. You can't be praising this team for crumbling when it matters most certainly fans are out of their minds not realising the massive opportunity blown by Arsenal to win the league, they literally handed city the league in a span of 4 games, knowing that even 3 results out of 4 would have won them the league, they failed to capitalise on 2 nil leads in 2 games and for me that's just a massive bottle!

    • @WangPaste
      @WangPaste Před 11 měsíci

      @@hzskillz1721
Once again I'll reiterate, I do not believe that the Arsenal players 'bottled it'. I believe that the board and owners at Arsenal failed to strengthen the squad in January when they were in a great position and left the manager with a brilliant first 11 players but limited depth within the squad to see the job through !!
In the first 2/3rds of the season, Arsenal overachieved in terms of results and negotiated themselves into an unbelievable position, a position that nobody expected, so the manager and players were doing all they could to achieve success with what they had between them.
Every manager always has a list of targets for their specific clubs to pursue in transfer windows and Arsenal are no different.
Arteta would have presented the board with a list of targets to strengthen the squad in January probably a month or two previously and given the position that he'd negotiated the club into, the board should have backed him financially and moved heaven and earth to provide Arteta with the reinforcements that he needed to see it through to the end.
      They didn't.
Now the players and Arteta are being blamed and called 'bottlers' when they've been absolutely outstanding for the majority of the season.
Blame the manager and players if you want by all means !! I don't care either way..... But after the World Cup and being in the position that Arsenal were in at the beginning of January, the board could have done a lot more to provide their manager with additions to the squad that may have helped him get them over the line !!
The diffence is between Arsenal and City.
      City have EVERYTHING.
Pace at the back with Walker
Leadership at the back with Dias
      Calmness and composure of Ederson
Physicality and presence of Rodri and Stones in CDM positions
Footballing intelligence and experience from De Bruyne and Gündogân
Skill, speed, carrying the ball and holding up play from the wingers Grealish and Bernardo
Clinical finishing, presence, movement and desire of Haaland up front
Then Mahrez, Foden, Alvárez, Aké, Laporte, Phillips, Palmer and Rico Lewis sat on the bench !!
Unfortunately for Arsenal and the others, City are only gonna get better from here !!
