    Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay. Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. Set in 1995, the story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien civilizations.
    Development of the film began by May 2013. It was officially announced in October 2014 as Marvel Studios' first female-led superhero film. Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve were hired to write the film the following April after submitting separate takes on the character, and borrowed elements from Roy Thomas' 1971 "Kree-Skrull War" comic book storyline. Larson was announced as Danvers at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, with Boden and Fleck hired to direct in April 2017. Robertson-Dworet was soon hired to re-write the script, with the rest of the cast added by the start of filming. Location shooting began in January 2018, with principal photography starting that March in California and concluding in Louisiana in July 2018. Several actors reprise their roles from previous MCU films in Captain Marvel, including Jackson and Gregg who were digitally de-aged in post-production to reflect the film's 1990s setting.

    My favorite quote about Captain Marvel comes from my fave writer by her, Kelly Sue DeConnick: "Captain America gets back up because it's the right thing to do. Captain Marvel gets back up because f*ck you." I adore this character. She sees each failure as motivation to try again. People can learn so much from her.

    Carol Danver was being brainwashed not to emote in the beginning of the movie, Brie Larson's performance in the beginning of the movie reflected that. Her performance was not monotonous towards the end. That was plot-driven, like Jedis not emoting. I agree it's not as entertaining, but it wasn't on Bree Larson, her performance improved as her character began to distance from the brainwashing. I don't think the power thing is an issue either, she just needs a stronger villain, which there are plenty. In my opinion, it was a much more interesting take on an origin story than what we're used to, with the character being in the dark along with the audience. I loved it.

      True, and you have to remember she is a literal superman. Superman behave exactly the same, acts as smug when he is superman. That's exactly how a super being confident about their powers will behave

    • @miriam8376
      @miriam8376 Před 2 lety +1

      Exactly, so many people miss that her character growth comes out of this brainwashing and gaslighting. Like, the fact that the Supreme Intelligence appears as someone you already WANT to believe is proof of how much of a manipulation this is. She's being told that having too much emotion is bad (a thing most women can identify with) and so she tries to curtail it. It's when she fully embraces rejecting their control and her own fury at the way she's been treated that she becomes truly powerful.

    You actually got it reversed with the de-aging. For Fury, they did CG and makeup, for Coulson, just traditional hair and make-up. Also, the aliens don't have faster than light engines, they use jump gates to traverse long distances, like when Rocket and Yondu had to do a ton of jumps to get to Ego's planet.

    Plus, this instalment has the best soundtrack outside of a Guardians flick. 🤘

  • @blazedj
    @blazedj Před 2 lety +8

    The reason for Carol’s stiff, monotone behavior is because she’s constantly told to keep her emotions in check, because, whenever she wouldn’t, her powers would begin to show, and the Kree didn’t want to run the risk of her potentially using it all up before they could harness it. She’d then have to adhere to more brainwashing from “someone she greatly admired” talking her into behaving again.
    So the way tension is written for “overpowered” characters is that, while, sure, things an be ended as soon as they arrive, is that they’re usually never written to be omnipresent. With this, those closest to them, or anyone they need to protect, can be placed in dangerous situations. Such as Lois Lane and Superman. It’s honestly the biggest “kryptonite” there is, as anyone who has lost someone close to them, or even anyone who can emphasize with the idea, can attest to how devastating it can be, especially if you could’ve potentially done something about it.

    • @neospock5034
      @neospock5034 Před 2 lety

      It's not as much about her being a woman, it's really more of a comic book accuracy thin, which yes somehow remains a thing for some folks. Plus there's (sadly) a lot of anti-Brie Larson sentiment from a small subset of moviegoers.
      No one complained about Wanda being even more powerful than Captain Marvel because her progression was shown over multiple films and it's something that occurred with her character in the comics too. The same applies to Jean Grey as the Phoenix (who hasn't appeared in the MCU yet).
      But Captain Marvel is character who was never on that level in the comics (even as Binary she wasn't quite Thor level), so the comic book readers cried foul when the MCU changed things up and made her the top powerhouse. And there are MANY more of those types than people who just have a problem with female characters being too powerful.

    • @matthewtopping2061
      @matthewtopping2061 Před 2 lety +2

      The problem with this movie is that Carol Danvers is basically a Mary Sue. She has no character development, and although there is a hidden baddie which is supposed to subvert our expectations, the personal conflict that is present in every MCU movie is sorely lacking here. That's why this movie sucks.

    • @harish123az
      @harish123az Před 2 lety +9

      @@matthewtopping2061 Huh, there is definitely a lot of conflict, you just dont relate to them. For eg, I am sure you relate to the Captain America being bullied physically as thats something you have gone through
      But you cannot relate to what women go through every single day, being told to smile, belittled, being forced to hide and curb their true potential every single time.
      The fact that she overcomes all of that and realizes her true potential is she herself and not from an outside power, is amazing character growth for a woman
      Not everything needs to be pandered to privelaged people, the movie hit plenty for those it was targeted towards

This movie is about her taking her own power back and embracing all that makes her who she is.

I'm used to relatives calling him, my brother, and myself, by the wrong names. So I wondered if it was relatives that I didn't recognize, calling me that name.
    So I went to a merchant that had an, "Indiana Jones" doll, and compared myself to it. There was a blonde and her husband. She had told him that I was in "costume", and so she won their bet I guess. I saw enough of a resemblance with the doll, to be happy. But Jones didn't wear sunglasses!
    By the way! The doll was one of those converted "Ken" dolls.

    I don't know why this movie got so much hate. This may not be the greatest movie but it was sure as hell entertaining. What's great about this movie the twist that skrulls ended up being not evil but just wanted to find their family and rest of their race
    What also was the cherry on to is the actor Ben Mendelsohn who plays Talos. Before I hated the guy because he always plays the asshole douche bad guy but Marvel knew what they were doing and cast him as the main Skrull to only give us the surprise that, no he isn't playing an asshole villain. In fact, I love Talos. His delivery of how he shook his head when they asked if the space ship is supposed to shake like that had me dying 🤣 I don't care what the nay sayers say about this movie. Totally rewatchable, unlike Iron Man 3

      Neither the Beyonder nor Galactus have been introduced in the MCU yet, although Korvac is rumored to be the main villain in Captain Marvel 2: The Marvels.
      The reason people says he's OP is because of her power level relative to the other Avengers (including Thor) we saw since Phase 1. She was intentionally made into the MCU's "Kryptonian" character. Just before the release of Captain Marvel, Feige said she'd be the most powerful character put onscreen yet, so that's exactly the role they wanted her to play.
      I agree She's not OP by cosmic standards, but she's not average either. She's WAY up there among heroes, although more powerful entities do exist like the Celestials, and eventually Galactus, The Phoenix Force etc.

    Two things. 1) I have never, EVER, in my 40+ years on Earth, heard anybody say “It’s dumb that Thor is on the team, he’s a god, he’s OP.” Why does this standard suddenly apply to Carol? 2) Difficult to write a story for her?! Superman has had AT LEAST one continuous title published monthly since 1938, so it can’t be THAT difficult to write for powerful characters.
    Be like Spider-Man, and examine your biases.

    • @neospock5034
      @neospock5034 Před 2 lety +1

      I think there are 3 main things behind the hate. The first is the anti-Brie Larson campaign that started before the movie was ever released. The second is the amount of hype this movie received as the MCU's first female-led solo film, their "Wonder Woman" so to speak. And much like Black Panther, no matter how good the movie wound up being, it's impossible to live up to such a crazy level of hype. Lots of people didn't outright dislike Black Panther but they thought it was way overhyped (and Black Panther was a better movie than Captain Marvel). But anyway, it's just a matter of sky-high expectations resulting in disappointment. The third (and the one pertinent to Thor) is that the MCU elevated Captain Marvel's power level relative to other characters way beyond the comics, which really irked the comic book fans. In the comics Captain Marvel is probably the 15th-20th most powerful hero of all, so she's very formidable but not in the top 5 with characters like Hulk and Thor. The MCU brought her in as the new #1 powerhouse and comic accuracy aside, many MCU fans didn't feel that should have happened.
      While Superman has been in publication since 1938, he's considered the prime example of why characters shouldn't be too overpowered. Because he's generally considered boring his stories often relied upon gimmicks and plot devices to make up for him being so ridiculously powerful. He's a big reason that Marvel was so successful when they provided a different kind of universe where heroes had more plausible, limited powers and real-world problems.
