I have seen Ronnie twice in Portland, Maine in the last few months. Both times, Per was on the drums for a few songs which was just amazing.... Bar none, after 1,000 shows in my life; these were the two best shows I have ever seen. The first show, Ronnie played 3.5 hours and never took a break. He is at the top of his game now.
Don't just call Ronnie Earl just another white blues guitar player. He is one of the most versatile guitar players in the music. Has a very own sound and way of playing. One of the few guitar players who can play a full show with just instrumentals.... oh yeah... playing clean.. no overdrive....
Forget Earl - how 'bout some praise for his backing musicians: Mudcat Ward on bass, Anthony Geraci on Keys and Mark greenberg on drums- without them, he can't do half of what he needs to do.
Hi FATharpo! Hifat? No, what I meant for was belated greetings. You may well be bewildered to see your page has become a venue for a rather lengthy debate without your permission. Sorry about that and thanks anyway. And of course you're more than welcome to join us.
Of course, blues is feelings. Did I ever deny that? I think it even silly to mention it. Blues is talks about life or personal perceptions of life. Humor is important to make you an attractive talker. Now who would enjoy a tremendous talker or a shouter? Gary Moore is a case in point. I call his blues Big Mouth Blues because of the way he plays and because of the way he stupidly keeps his mouth open. Try pizzas in Italy!
If you put technical expertise first and foremost, here's the ultimate example. Stanley Jordan. The guitarist with the greatest technical expertise. Undeniable. You can't play like him even one note. Compared with him, the guitarists you admire are nothing. And does he play blues? You bet! Just listen to him play "Still Got the Blues" on his "Live in NY" album. He's got not only outrageous virtuosity but also tremendous musicality. He can talk eloquently on his guitar.
If I offended you, I apologize. But I haven't used any abusive words directed at you, while you started with "What you been smokin'?" which I find quite derogatory and now you say I'm being harsh. Ah, I'm the bad guy. Well, debating is inherently offensive. Anyway I hope our debate is constructive. I even wish there were more participants here. P.S. I need more space; pls reply (just a line will do, if you don't have much to write) to each of my messages so I can have a comment box. Cheers!
Am I having the same sort of difficulty as when you're trying to convince a kid there are better foods out there than Macdonald's Hamburgers? I hope you're intelligent enough to suspect what you like best may not be the best the world can offer. Ever tried pizzas in Italy? No matter how you like the pizzas at your local pizza parlor, it can't compare with the real McCoy. Same with music (esp. blues). Great blues have GROOVE and HUMOR.
@janedoe1024 Never post a negative comment on a music vid on CZcams unless you're sure to be able to play better? Never complain about food served at a restaurant because you cannot cook better? Would you say the same thing to music critics? Some of them are very very knowleageable and informative though most of them are probably lousy musicians. Keep listening to good/real music and develop a discerning ear. You also need to develop a more logical mind.
Now want to talk about technical expertise? Hang on! Didn't you say blues is feelings? Alright, technical side is also important. But here you're wrong again . Magic Sam, Earl Hooker, Robert Johnson and his stepson Robert Lockwood to name a few. For example you can see what a virtuoso RL was on Blues Story DVD. Do you realize that most of the guitarists you say are great hardly ever play acoustic and mostly play single-string solos? So much for their technical expertise!
When did we start talking ONLY about blues guitarists of today? I started with a comparison between Earl and T-Bone, and the inferior performances of blues guitarists of today. There are few blues musicians today who are on a par with their predecessors. Part of the reason is the blues audiences today not having a discerning ear. Raise your standards;knowledgeable audiences bring about better musicians just like well-informed voters can elect a better president.
If you think this is anywhere near T-Bone, you still got a long way to go. One of the reasons many guitarists have failed to emulate T-Bone is they cannot get their sticky fingers off the fret board fast enough to sound crisp and sharp. They sound bloody soggy. In my view Ronnie Earl is just another 'white blues' guitar player.
They must be 10 times more knowledgeable about black music than me. Tom Dowd is the producer I admire most but it doesn't matter if he played music himself, though I know he did. If you call the crap Ronnie Earl plays "blues", you still don't understand the real blues after all these years. I admit as a kid I mostly listened to 'white' blues. But the realization came when I was 23. And you're what? 45... How immature! Hitting blue notes is one thing, playing blues is completely another.
T-Bone is called the Father of Modern Blues? What's your definition of Modern Blues then? You sure you understand what you're talking about? You know what, you're talking about white blues or even heavy metal blues, which are neither genuine blues nor blues rock. Blues rock is already an established genre and I love it. But I regard white blues as wannabe blues and heavy metal blues as deformed blues. Just childish and pathetic.

Used to love to go see him at the Sit N Bull in Maynard.....
This man should have his own jet airplane....Better than most who do...
after listening to this, i've discovered that SRV had a lot of T-Bone influence
i can hear a lot of T-Bone in SRV
I never said forget Earl. ;)
I don't think I'd be able to, even if I tried.
HALLO!! Led Ronnie play the song he call´´ BLUES FOR BONE,, him self , I do not say this is an some clone of MR T BONE! Thanks,
If we like two different styles of the blues, in what way do you think they are different?
Little Anthony Geraci on the organ.

One more question---apart from his fast fingers (not to be compared to Steve Vai's), is there anything else in Moore's technical expertise?
Forget Earl - how 'bout some praise for his backing musicians: Mudcat Ward on bass, Anthony Geraci on Keys and Mark greenberg on drums- without them, he can't do half of what he needs to do.

Jim Blues clearly does not know who Ronnie Earl is.
