Used to work at a place that used multiple conveyer belts and we took the belts to clean them one day. When it came time to put them back on the frames, we realized that we couldn't access the underside of one of the frames to "thread" the belt back on. Coworker 1 and 2 are brainstorming what to do, I get an idea. My ideas are most of the time a little "out there" and I'm not the best at articulating my ideas so I told them I'd be back and I had an idea. Grabed a tape measure and pulled the string off a disposable face mask. The tape measure was more than long enough to reach the other side of the frame and had a hole punch at the very end of it. The belt had holes where the pegs went to keep each segment together and the string from the mask would tie the belt to the tape measure. We'd pull the belt through by retracting the tape measure. It ended up working great! The coworker who would shoot down my ideas if they didn't make sense to him was on vacation that day and, "let's use the tape measure," was all I'd have been able to explain in the instant.

Terry Pratchett once wrote about an electrician family member who was called out to an Oxford Professor to figure out why their plug socket wasn't working. The socket had been installed by the professor but no electricity was coming through. The electrician looked into it and found that there were no wires behind the plug socket, there wasn't even a hole.
The professor had just screwed in a plus socket to the skirting board assuming electricity would come out

I hate it when someone decides to crack a sarcastic joke instead of telling the truth when someone else doesn’t understand even if it’s “obvious” or something “everybody knows”.
Why do people feel the need to do that? It helps nobody and usually makes things worse.

Ive read a story about someone asking about some basic hygiene products like its some brand new thing. And of course, internet strangers made all types of rude jokes... even mocking him for not knowing it like his parents didn't raise him.
Turns out that, yeah, his parents didn't. He was sheltered who never went to public school, and was trying to allow himself to grow out of that toxic environment.
Even those odd, weird, and even rude people deserve empathy (extending yourself to their perspective), simply because they're human.

Strongly worded Alternative Point - If you enter a higher level of education, you will find this to be common. I am not saying you will find a solution. This is the real world. The truth is real. Even if given via sarcastic jokes or harsh tones from professors, If you push past such childishness, you will find the reasons behind it. Some reasons for, well, "THEM," you have no part in, like trauma or childhood issues. However, never forget that people who are smarter than you are that way. If they misapply something, be careful what you understand about what is going on. Otherwise, life just knocks you back down to the kiddie table.
Experts do not go around mocking other experts. However, if you see an expectation and apply it as a rule, you are lost. Some experts are A-holes. Layman think all Experts (that aren't helping them) are A-holes. Deal with it. Find your tribe or make one.

Like I understand it, initially. You think they're joking. But why would you say "I do it all the time." when "I've grown tired of life anyhow." is funnier? (YMMV) And when they say "what?" You respond, "... because you _just_ joked about blowing us all up?" and _then_ it comes out that they _weren't_ joking, and you see where the knowledge gaps are. For some reason, when trolling online especially, one of the rules is to never admit you're trolling.

The more specialized in a specific area you become, the less knowledgable you become regarding other thinhs. For example, people who study high level math will have a hard time doing basic math because they arent really learning applicable math anymore but more math thoery.

Story 5: That guy's EE degree did not help him. As a EE, he should know not to put metal in a microwave. In fact, as EE, he should also know that you can put a metal spoon in so long as you don't touch it when you pull it out. It won't spark, but it will be very hot.

10:56 reminds me of the time my mom asked me and my brother to pick up ‘jello’ at the store,
at first i was confused cause we already had a couple boxes, but i dont question it cause its a hot day
when we come back with the groceries shes like where is the *hielo* im like wym … then it hits me
she meant *ice* but hielo and jello sound virtually the same when she says it….

    ooohhhh
    that makes more sense 😭
worst part is that she never even says ‘jello’ she says ‘gelatina’
🤦one of my top ten bruh moments for sure

My brother and I were playing cricket in the yard. We had a garden bed that was in the way, so we decided to try and move it as we had no plants inside the concrete edging anyway. It was a round one about 1m diameter circle, weighing about 100kg+. We were 9 and 13. Our method was to lift one side and try and roll it elsewhere. So we lift one side, and I proceeded to support it from partly underneath it. Realised that with our combined weight, that was probably barely more than the garden edge itself we weren't strong enough to do so and we lost hold of it.
Ended up breaking my leg in 3 places. The kicker, we were both straight A students in school. Ive done multiple IQ tests online and aptitude tests for things like military entry and always scored incredibly high (IQ tests often above 160, aptitude test basically said mentally I could do any role in the military etc). My brother is smarter than me aswell (hes the older one). We've both made many questionable decisions in life. Both essentially failed high school, he dropped out in yr 10 and I finished 12 but with minimum grades, neither have done college or further education either though there is a few other factors that prevented us succeeding at the time which I believe derailed our schooling.
We both have generally exceeded expectations and developed in our jobs more than would be normal in said job fields.
One thing I learnt is that people think intelligence matters. It doesn't. Wisdom is what matters. Wisdom makes you smart. Intelligence just makes you think you are.

I had a similar colleague like in story 5. He had his lunch in a plastic box, so the rest of us said he can´t put the box in the microwave, he just opened the box and put his lunch on a plate. The problem was, his food was still in wrapped aluminium foil... By the way we are going to become mechatronics engineers so yeah and also, same guy went to the toilet but came back saying the door was closed, he pulled instead of pushing... He isn´t the brightest candle on the cake

Actually the can of soup might've been alright, if the can were big enough. Metal in a microwave only causes a problem when you have points close enough together to cause an arc. I'm pretty sure the opening of a soup can is too wide for electricty to arc, with the mount of power microwaves kick out. It probably wouldn't have heated the soup itself though, since most of the microwaves would reflect off the can instead of penetrating.
Lots of metal objects are frequently microwaved with no ill effect, like round sheet pans or metal racks.

On the car aircon one:- Went to lunch with my very smart Son on a hot day, in a car he had been driving for a few months. He apologised about the heat, but his air-conditioning wasn't working. I looked around and pressed the clearly marked button and his car magically began to cool. He was very good about the months of mocking which followed.

Doctors sacrifice a lot of knowledge just to specialize in one single subject. Lately though, it's just a way to earn easy money if you are good at rote memorization. Many primary care physicians are just drive-through attendants for Insurance companies.
It's true for most people who specialize in only 1 thing. Jack of all trades, master of none is always better than a master of 1

I was at a zoo with my mom and she was looking at a map tgat showed where the historical range on animals used to be in America. She said "I didn't know there used to be bison in New England." I replied, "They probably used to live around Buffalo, New York." It never occurred to her how the town got its name.
