I build my jungle bases almost just the same way. when I started terrain making I spent about 10 Euros and had enough plastic plants to make a whole gaming board with it. In Germany there are several thrift stores that sell grass tiles with no less than 100 single plants on them that make great bushes. another good thing is that they come in different shapes and colours, too. You can also stick several of them on a skewer to make bigger plants. As bases I uses old DVDs or thick card board (from old puzzle boxes).
Wouldn't say the lighting was bad, but some of the stuff done towards the end (in the kitchen) was much brighter. Also, thanks for the wash idea for the plastic plants.
Lighting: The farm and feed store near me has porcelain ceramic sockets in lamps with clamps on them meant for heat lamps in a hog farm. These sockets can withstand the heat from a 500 watt photo lamp and light things up brightly at a cheap price.

Hi Mel, a spanish London based fan here! I'm not an expert with cameras and lights but, I use to work "white light" bulb or "sun-light" bulb. I found those in UK in the crafts stores. Those are pretty nice bulbs because they send out a non-coloured light so the you can see the actual colours on your paints or whatever you are working in. Maybe this can help you with you light-camera issue. Cheers mate!
Better late than never. Another good tutorial Mel. After the wash I like to come back and drybrush the tips in a lighter green to elude to new growth. Another old favourite of mine is to use gardeners green tie wire for plants. It is a wire coated in plastic with 2 wings on either side. By hacking at the wings with a sharp scalpel you end up with a fern looking frond. Twist several together to make a fern. They look delicate but are as tough as nails.
Great terrain tutorial on jungle terrain. I am a firm believer that the aquarium plants are the best and cheapest way to go. Not to mention the diversity of plants you get and if you mix and match you can create alien plant life as well . Best of Luck and thank you for sharing.

I can't bear the thought of being ripped off buying 'special' hobby accessories. I've tried making plants out of paper but it just does not look right...your selection of home plants is an inspiration!
The best thing I can suggest for the lighting, is to go to a fine art shop and get some daylight bulbs, they are about £9 each, but they simulate natural lighting perfectly.

Very nice work. One note though, the "model plants" that were shown first, are indeed also aquarium plants. (Specifically, they are made to provide a quick protective bed in hatcheries, so the fry have a place to hide.) Not to take funds away from our precious FLGS, but they are significantly cheaper from pet shops.

Very nice job, good information and suggestions that I can use for creating my jungle for games of Congo. The lighting was good enough, best in the kitchen. I do think the flocking is a bit too "golf course-ish." Smooth, and short. I have used various shades and heights of static grass. Thanks.

that is some really good jungle terrain there mate, that really dose look very very nice, i have never been one for using plasti plants in terrain, but i would put that on a battlefield any day of the week. congrats mate you get another gold star. :)
The new setup is really nice and the camera works really good, but for the lightning, try to have a light source from the front, maybe a little bit to the side and above. Your setup in the beginning has the light from the back, so the shadow of the pieces are falling on the side of the camera. If you change it to more side/front, you get only shadows from the front side, which shows more of the texture of the items you want to show. Totally from the front or top wouldnt be great either, because then all items would look flat(like in your kitchen). Maybe look up something like rembrand ligthning, which is a good start to experiment for your setup. And i'm really looking forward for the tutorial on the hills. I'm planning some rocky slopes myself and I will be using cork-like materials, so hopefully I can learn some thinks :) Cheers
Loved the new camera angles. Great work. Another good source of plastic plant material, especially at this time of year, is plastic Xmas trees. Many are made up of lots of separate pieces like the decorative plants in the video, and stripping down a 4' tree can give you a forest of small tree-like plants. And some of the small 1' trees are made up of small crown shaped bushes. Shops might still have one or two left on clearance by now, but looking around in the first couple of weeks in January you can usually pick them up for a pittance. Regarding the plants in your video that you say were designed for modelling purposes - I'm not convinced. They may have been sold as such at a healthy "hobbyist" markup, but I have some almost identical aquarium plants bought direct from China via eBay for literal pocket change.

Another great video! Also using PVA glue instead of the hot glue gun on putting in the small clumps of foliage is the hot tip of the gun could melt your plastic plants.

My experience of lighting for camera work is that there almost isn't such a thing as 'too much'... The camera likes it to be a lot brighter than humans are usually comfortable with!
Mel, the new cam is very good, especially the auto-focus. :) For further projects or even short intros, try to prevent to have direct light sources like windows in the view. That always kills the whole image. ;) And great job on the plastic plants! :)
Excellent work, but I'd recommend adding some color. One of the great things about actual jungles is that there are always some vividly colored flowers peeking through. Only as an accent, though, in the general wall of green.
So glad I've finally been able to catch up to your current video. I've been binge watching your videos since I found your Channel. Great Job! Here's a tip for the camera, for your intro shot, you have the Window in the camera frame. If you pan your camera left a bit to eliminate the bright window the camera will brighten up the rest of the room.
Nice tip. I didn't think of that. If the camera is adjusting the exposure on the fly (most likely), cutting out that window will encourage the camera to increase its light sensitivity.
Great tutorial, very helpful for some stuff I'm doing now, but your story about getting a load of citadel paints for 1 quid each had me cursing you! :-)

.. like your mix of different kinds of plants and materials, usually I only used plasik plans and static grass, but at the time I am building up a nice supply in "homemade" clump foliage to test it on some terrain soon... as you are a "PVA-person" I am as well... but this video of yours has brought me to my decicion finally to buy a hotglue-pistol..... :D
TheTerrainTutor :-D ... might be.... but when building jungle-terrain and have to use lots and lots of plants and allways have to drill small holes into the base to glue them into the base with PVA...... Great video as always, camera angle and lighting seemed good so just give yourself more time to adapt to using the new angle. Only advice I could give is keep making videos! Your quality is always improving so keep up the great work!

I know this is an old video and by now I assume that you have updated your lighting and angels etc. however I would say just one item and that is to film with the video on the left side. I have had great success copying these for my own collection, thank you very much for the video! Just watching it again, I notice that the PVA used for the flocking is straight from the bottle. But in every other video I've seen on the channel, the flocking is always done with a watered down mix of PVA (of at least 50/50). I wonder, was there a particular reason the PVA was used neat in this video?
Those look cool for impassible terrain, but they look difficult to move the models through. Would you have been better to have a base and have a number of plants on 20mm bases so you can move trees out of the way.
Great video! Just wanted to know what you meant at 8:17--did you wash them with three different washes in that order to achieve the result at the far right, or was each of those plants was only washed with one colour?
By the way I've got a question: What are you making the ground of your terrains from? It doesn't look like MDF polystyrene foam (like the pink or blue sheet stuff they put on houses like you get at a warehouse store such as Home Depot). I've used some of that stuff but it melts when hot glue is applied which is not unexpected.
Chris Melvin Which ground mate? These were flat bases with some filler (spackle), typically I used pink polystyrene, you can hot glue it as long as your glue is cool enough :-)

I need some alien looking vegetation, got to look out for those reduced plants. Can these be repainted, as I was thinking about purple, red and blue colored plants? Or is my best option aquarium plants?

There was nowt wrong with the lighting dude. You sit where you're most comfortable. Otherwise your videos aren't going to be as good as you'll want to rush them.

Excellent work, but I'd recommend adding some color. One of the great things about actual jungles is that there are always some vividly colored flowers peeking through. Only as an accent, though, in the general wall of green.

Here's a tip for the camera, for your intro shot, you have the Window in the camera frame. If you pan your camera left a bit to eliminate the bright window the camera will brighten up the rest of the room.
Nice tip. I didn't think of that. If the camera is adjusting the exposure on the fly (most likely), cutting out that window will encourage the camera to increase its light sensitivity.

.. like your mix of different kinds of plants and materials, usually I only used plasik plans and static grass, but at the time I am building up a nice supply in "homemade" clump foliage to test it on some terrain soon... as you are a "PVA-person" I am as well... but this video of yours has brought me to my decicion finally to buy a hotglue-pistol..... :D

:-D ... might be.... but when building jungle-terrain and have to use lots and lots of plants and allways have to drill small holes into the base to glue them into the base with PVA...... I´d rather try the "hotglue"-solution next time..... ;-)

New to your videos. you do great work and your tutorial was most helpful! I know this is an old video and by now I assume that you have updated your lighting and angels etc. however I would say just one item and that is to film with the video on the left side. Due to the fact your left handed (looked that way to me) and putting it on the left side will give a clear view of what you are doing. Well, that's my 2 copper. Thanks for the video!

I have had great success copying these for my own collection, thank you very much for the video! Just watching it again, I notice that the PVA used for the flocking is straight from the bottle. But in every other video I've seen on the channel, the flocking is always done with a watered down mix of PVA (of at least 50/50). I wonder, was there a particular reason the PVA was used neat in this video?
I was lazy and just decide to water it down with a wet brush to save mixing it in a pot mate lol

Those look cool for impassible terrain, but they look difficult to move the models through. Would you have been better to have a base and have a number of plants on 20mm bases so you can move trees out of the way.
john tailby it's a tutorial on using the plants rather than types of area terrain techniques but yeah totally with you mate
Should do some with Aztec type ruins to provide cover ie big stone blocks fallen statues

Great video! Just wanted to know what you meant at 8:17--did you wash them with three different washes in that order to achieve the result at the far right, or was each of those plants was only washed with one colour?

By the way I've got a question: What are you making the ground of your terrains from? It doesn't look like MDF polystyrene foam (like the pink or blue sheet stuff they put on houses like you get at a warehouse store such as Home Depot). I've used some of that stuff but it melts when hot glue is applied which is not unexpected.
Chris Melvin Which ground mate? These were flat bases with some filler (spackle), typically I used pink polystyrene, you can hot glue it as long as your glue is cool enough :-)

I need some alien looking vegetation, got to look out for those reduced plants. Can these be repainted, as I was thinking about purple, red and blue colored plants? Or is my best option aquarium plants?

fine turning, acrylic washes go down and set, oils take much longer and are reworkable with solvents, so allow fine tuning mate

Dan Bellinger It has to be kept somewhere pretty damn hot to dry out to brittle mate, I've never had a problem with it and i've got pieces that are 8 yrs old and it's still fine
