    In this video I will be showing you the tools and processes that I use in the early stages of blocking out characters in ZBrush. A large majority of it is using the move brush on primitive shapes. It's not a complicated process and doesn't require many tools. What is difficult however, is being able to see and represent a form accurately. If you want to learn more about that, check out this video: • Understanding Form

    In case anyone is as confused as I was: at 9:23 while Follygon is in TPoseMesh mode he clicks on a "subtool" and the others get masked. The way to do this is to hit "W" (even if you're using Gizmo, not Transpose) and CTRL+Click on that part of the model. Then hit Q to return to brush mode.

    For everyone watching: Please remember to save your model as a 'ztool'/tool. I saved mine as a document and lost all modelling progress because saving as a document saves it as essentially a 'screenshot' of your model (doesn't save any 3d info). Also if you accidentally exit editing mode and end up only being able to draw your model out again on top of the previous one, hit 'Ctrl+N' to clear the canvas, then draw the model out again and immediately hit 'Edit' to get back to editing.

      That really sucks :(. But there’s no way that you will be WORSE at sculpting a month from now if you keep doing it. So you lost the actual 3D model, but you can make something similar much faster now. Every time you make a model, you are making it easier to do it again. The first time I made a skull, it looked god awful and it took me literally all day. Now I can make one that looks way better in like half a day. If I keep doing it, I could probably get to the point where I can make a pretty good skull in like 1 hour or so. So don’t lose all hope, my dude! Sorry you had to learn the hard way about Zbrush’s weird ass ZTOOL/ ZProject/ Z document distinction. Oh. And that’s another thing. Look up the difference between a zproject and a ztool. You might quickly take up a lot of computer space by saving everything needlessly as a zproject. Good luck to you.

      This broke my heart, lol. I'm a bit of a veteran, it's easy to forget how silly Zbrush is set up.
      For anyone else who fears they lost their work. Always try hitting the comma key ( , ) and click the QuickSave menu. It'll give you access to a backlog of quicksaves (by default Zbrush does this about every 10-20 minutes)

    • @Roxirin
      @Roxirin Před rokem +2

      @@drewgamble8380 Thanks for the extra tip! Yeah, I just don't understand why it's so unnecessarily complicated?? No other program has such absolutely bizarre saving/opening/modeling/editing workflow, not to mention the 'canvas' system... honestly, I never completely figured it out, even though I studied Game Art at university. I use Nomad Sculpt now hahah

    Hi follygon. This video was so very helpful and I followed it to the very end. I tried and have been trying to use the blockout to sculpt a character but it's proved rather difficult. I can't seem to get it right and no matter how much I dynamesh or zremesh, my model seems to break. I'm still at the blockout part from going back each time I try to move forward. If it's not too much to ask, can you please do a tutorial on how to go from blocked to smooth or a step forward. When you make a copy the original part will be masked .. so you can keep on editing the duplicate, to edit the main all you have to do is inverting the mask by Ctrl+Click anywhere on the screen this way you'll switch the mask between the main and the duplicate, or you better split unmasked to separate those to subtools and make them individual parts, if you still want to keep those as one and still can edit independently you better polygroup em, while one of the parts still masked click on Ctrl+W and you are good to go, Hope I could help out

      @@Follygon One last thing, I am curently creating my own character, but i think the symmetry is messed up. the left side of my model is not as sculpted as the right side is. And I think that when i try to reset the symmetry by going to transform, it just moves the head down, and nothing changes.

    how do you copy and its already are different subtools. when i hold Ctrl and copy all spheres are in single subtool

    • @terrych6175
      @terrych6175 Před 3 lety

      you duplicate the subtool and just drag it down into position. if you copy it in the same subtool with Ctrl it will stay in that subtool and idk how to switch betwean object in the same subtool.

      He is using SelectRect, to do it press ctrl+shift and click in the body part you want, then ctrl+shift and click and drag to view the other parts, after that repeat the first steps to add more body parts to the selecction. Next do ctrl+tab and click on the canvas for mask all what you see .For unhide the body parts do again the ctrl+shift and click on the canvas.

      I'm guessing you figured this out by now, but in case not - Alessia's answer works in normal mode but not in TPoseMesh mode. For the latter, hit "W" (even if you're using Gizmo, not Transpose) and CTRL+Click to select the part/polygorup. Then hit Q to return to brush mode.

    No, the X button does not automatically enter symmetry mode. (and when I did, the sphere rotation is different from yours)

      @@Follygon A point you didn't mention is that ZSpheres are useless for rigging models for use outside of ZBrush (you can't export the rigging), which really them a bit of a time waste, IMHO, when added to everything you mention in that video.
