No wonder why the repo of our beautiful country is so messed up .

Yes India does have kind of a reputation of that, and it hold a lot of foreigners back from visiting India. But it 's good that you are at least not in denial of this issue, because it's for the good of your own country to recognize this problem. I notice some people in the comment section seem offended when people mention such scams. But the reality is, the people who suffer the most of such scams are the Indian people themselves. Because what hurts Indian economy, ultimately hurts the Indian population. I wish all the best for your country, and hope the government finds a way to fight against these type of practices, so that your country and it 's people can prosper. I wish your people all the best, and respect you for aknowledging the issue.

    @countesspoppie Před 2 lety +1

    this mostly applies to Delhi:
    1) always look jaded like you take this route everyday, with 100 rupees in 10-20 rupee notes ready in your pocket, wallet deep inside your bag.
    2) never choose the first 5 autos available; especially the ones who look like they've been waiting there a while chilling; walk down the road and flag one down
    3) tell the driver where you want to go with the price you're offering and say you have change (the 10-20 rupee notes in your pocket - add another 10-20 rupees if you want/you're in a hurry). getting change off a 100rupee note is ridiculously difficult.
    4) tell the driver to drop you off at the beginning of a market, instead of the middle section, so he knows he can pick up another customer immediately after your drop off
    5) be prepared to walk away
    6) be prepared to wait 10 minutes before you find a realistic price
    7) know that less pedestrian-populated areas where he won't find another customer are going to be a pain in the elbow to haggle (embassies, hotels)
    8) if you're going to a less popular market, name a landmark/metro station for guidance
    9) don't bother with street names; landmarks/metro stations work better
    10) if the auto driver stops to ask, for example, 3 people how to get somewhere, all 3 will give completely different answer, it's all part of the adventure ;)
    11) ive also offered 10-20 rupees above the meter price; if they promise to use the meter
    12) learn how to say 30/50/100/150 in hindi
    13) do check out the metro, it's spotless and affordable; especially if you're staying in a hotel; the autos around hotels are really difficult to haggle
    14) government prepaid auto stands may also surcharge up to 40 rupees fyi
    15) you're better off taking the metro to Chandni Chowk; the traffic is horrendous there; and then hire a cycle rickshaw for a tour
    16) if he suddenly changes the price mid-route, tell him to stop, give him 50 rupees, and get off immediately; if he changes the price at the end; offer him 20 rupees above the initial negotiated price and walk off. sure, i was left trembling, but i was comfortable knowing i'd offered a reasonable fare and wasn't going to pay 150 rupees for a 10 minute drive. keep calm, polite, firm and jaded.
    17) go to a taxi station and ask them about their 4h and 8h rates (with or without a/c) - sometimes that might work out cheaper for you if you've got many stops planned. remember to give them the parking money needed during the stops (20-30 rupees).
    18) if a market is coincidentally "closed" tell them you're going to go eat at a specific restaurant/visit an indian uncle/aunty.
    19) the "best bazaar/markets/showrooms" they suggest *never* have the best quality/affordable products. go to the Swiss Cottage in Janpath and start building a repertoire of quality&price
    20) i couldn't end this list at 19).

Rickshaw drivers in major cities of India (especially Delhi) are obliged by law
    - To charge you by meter.
    - Cannot deny you transport if the rickshaw is not occupied.
When i was in Delhi, this is what i used to do & it always worked. This method was encouraged to me by a Delhi police officer.
    1) Get in a rickshaw if you see its empty & immediately inform the driver your destination.
    2) The Driver would say some bullshit price & you should say you want to pay by meter. At this point the driver will try to ask you out of the vehicle & or Say the Meter is not working.
    3) Without any hesitation you simply take out your phone, Inform the driver & dial "100" (police) to complain. You should immediately inform the dispatcher that the rickshaw driver doesn't want to use the meter & make sure to tell them the Licence plate number of the Rickshaw.
    4) Magically the Meter will start working & the driver will take you to the destination & charge you by meter.
Conveying the licence plate number of the Rickshaw to the police ensures your safety, this way the driver wont take a revenge on you or cheat you or take the long route.
P.S. make sure that the meter fair is set to "0.00" when your journey begins
    Wish you safe Travel.

It's ridiculous that some people are trying to defend these drivers simply because of how much it equates to in U.S. Dollars. That's not the point. They are lying and deceiving tourists who are spending their honest earned money to boost their economy. Cradelling this form of dishonesty is morally wrong and simply advocating and promoting its continuation. It can also have much more sinister and dangerous repercussions than the seemingly trivial issues highlighted here.

the usa government itself are taxing heavily on every items which we buy from there. consider iphone X. its 30% more costlier than usa because of taxes and this applies each and every other products also. so when foreigners like you visit india, be prepared to give something extra. this will get you some reputation, the sellers will be happy and you are going for a tour and for these guys you are special because they know you can afford to give a little extra but if you are just going to bargain like the locals then there is no difference. by the way am not fully backing up these drivers but calling them as scammers is heavily used word. scammer means " if they dropped you in the middle of nowhere", "went to different route","taking long route" asking for higher price is almost like bidding. if you are happy with the money then you can take a ride. simple as that.

Did you know, in Mumbai there have also been instances where the rickshaw meters have been tampered to show more distance than what had been actually covered.

That scam is fairly common. It happened to me in Egypt and also tuktuk driver in Thailand, oh and in Malaysia and the Philippines as well ha ha. So many places. In Egypt the driver stopped in the middle of nowhere and then tried to triple the price to what we negotiated. We refused and he told us to get out. So we had to get out in the middle of nowhere. Thankfully a truck came along and they drove us to our destination for free ! ha ha.
