@@jhome886 I found another video about Carol and Julie Andrews doing this same type of skit in 1962 with Roy Castle. Maybe that comment has to do with that video? This video has a longer song though.
"Tain't only the 'urdlin' 'n the 'oppin' over the 'igh edges what 'urts the 'orses 'ooves... It's the 'ammer 'ammer 'ammer on the 'ard iron road!" These two ladies are great!
Hate to say it, but when back in '75 when saw the show couldn't figure out what they were saying and wondered. Fast forward to 2022 still couldn't figure it out. Till now. Now that I see it written down and read it, I say "Ohhh, so that's what they were talking about! Now it makes sense!😂🤣 Thank You! And to think that Julie Andrews wrote in her book that they actually toned down the accent for the US and had to use a thicker in in the UK😲😯.Gee if I couldn't understand the very toned down one how would I understand the original accent in the UK?😲😯
I keep watching this! As a child of the 80s, Dame Maggie has always been ' old' to me. She was old in sister Act and more so in Downton Abbey and it's totally wonderful to discover her in her younger says. These ladies are, what in thier 30s? Such a brilliant act, fab singing and very funny!! She kept her tongue- in -cheek witty comments into Downton Abbey too. They don't make fantastic shows like this, now. We have talk shows , but this one is rehursed, and brilliantly funny. Both ladies are a class act. It's one of my favourite 'go-to' CZcams videos!
I keep watching this thinking "oh I'll get bored of this soon" 100 views later...nope still amazing! Love these two women, such role models for young girls like me rather than some of the women today!
Yes, this is a terrific duet with one of the great natural charmers of British entertainment. I have to confess my bias, however, for her irresistibly adorable partner. Carol, you are the woman who must have been my true love in a former life. You are simply ravishing in every way.
Yeah, well that's what many would consider the "posh" accent, as many would generalise it. The enunciation and speech is very proper and clear. While Liverpudlian (Beatles) is Scouse, up north. "Cockney" is more derived from economic means. It was about being in Cheapside, the borough off the poorer side of London, and has connotations with working-class London.
Dear, by all, I'm sure it is, my beloved Mangi!! Looking at you, you regret that time changes people by making them old. Even though you are old, you do not cease to be interesting and damn good-looking
I love this video!! My best friend and I have learned every part to this act and let me tell you it is quite funny to see us parading down the halls at school reciting random lines... ;)
Mum asked me "does Maggie Smith ever pursue a singing career? Because she has a good voice, she can go along singing with Carol (which she consider who has a great voice ever). I mean, she can hit higher notes than that, she should've been a singer." Well, I quite agree!
unfortunately i'm italian and i can't understand the whole video, but i understand the most of this video so i can say that MAGGIE IS FANTASTIC AND SO FUNNY. è meravigliosa, non ci sono altre parole per descriverla😍 i hope i have written correctly
An actor should really be able to sing, dance, do accents and play a simple musical instrument (just enough to plunk or pick out a tune on key or string.) Music and mimicry are great skills for an actor to have naturally. She obviously like Carol and enjoys being on her show a lot more than she might many other people who ask her heavy questions about Her Art .
aaah, this accent! ADORABLE! as beautiful as she is! :) dunno why some people make fun of her voice - it's so lovely *-* i am 15 and from germany and absolutly crazy about this woman! =)
ghostblade500 Well, no wonder. Even though she is still charming, lovely and does her roles perfectly, she can't be as energetic as back then. And she has admitted that she is lonely since her husband died...so she is not so happy anymore. Which is sad. :( Still loving her and wishing all the best.
@minervaskitten Maggie isn't a bad singer at all! In "Oh! What a Lovely War" I thought she was amazing! She really should have sang more often in her hay day :D
Now it all makes sense : Prof Higgins used the reverse process to help Liza speak posh : 1. The rain in Spain - for the "ei" sound 2. In Hampstead Herrifort and Hampshire hurricanes hardly ever happen - for emphasising the "H" 3 pebbles in mouth for clear enunciation, etc.. It took poor Eliza 6 months. Carol got the idea in 4 minutes.
@FunnyleinLL Tain't only the 'urdlin' 'n the 'oppin' over the 'igh edges what 'urts the 'orses 'ooves... It's the 'ammer 'ammer 'ammer on the 'ard iron road!"
Haha At that part where they say the whatever with the little bottles, it sounds like they say "what a lot of little buttholes":D Maggie smith kicks butt!!!
If you add the leading letter "h" back in, she says: "It ain't only the hurdling and the hopping over the high hedges what hurts the horses' hooves; it's the 'hammer hammer hammer' on the hard iron road."
"Julie Andrews will be livid " Lol can't stop laughing
That was hilarious :'D

Actresses like Maggie make being an actor a respectable and dignified profession.
Maggie smith is positively beautiful. I just love her. she is my idol.
Same.

Such classy performers - so sad that we never see anything close to this nowadays.
Aren't these ladies both still alive?
@@BuzziRus Thankfully they most certainly are!
@@michaelburling I see what you mean, we don't have such quality shows these days. This is the quality performance of a bygone era....
The proper golden years of entertainment.
Maggie Smith is awesome...AWESOME!!!
Remember smart kind simple humor? Talent and love. Best peeps in the industry.
At the beginning it was like hearing the Dowager Countess, only 40 years younger, sassily putting down anything and everything American. 😀😁😅😂🤣
"Julie Andrews with be livid!!"
I laughed so hard I died a little,
I have lost track of the number of times I've watched this! I love Maggie Smith even more now (if that's possible!)

Maggie Smith is just utterly great
You can hear Kenneth Williams' influence on Maggie here. So lovely

They were just so excellent !!!!
What she called the ‘queen’s English’ sounded very like Kenneth Williams, who was a good friend of Maggie Smith’s.
