Couple of things, when you sand at the beginning, you can do this using soapy water, this will make sanding easier, save clogging up the sand paper and also wash the part as you sand, also when you do the weathered look with watered down black paint make sure its not on a matt white or you wont be able to wipe off after, this is more for people watching..... Apart from that i would say its a great job for your first go
Nice job Rick! looks like a fun project. It reminds me of when I built my lightsaber out of plumbing parts. You can see it in my profile picture along with some Photoshop tricks. Putting the lights inside your gun looks fantastic and the light on the wall side really adds to the effect.
amazing video, I've needed something like this to give me the confidence to do my nerf gun up too, Thanks for the brilliant video and great job on the gun, it looks brilliant!
LOLOL That was so Fun! That is amazing. I can't believe how that silver really made it look used, and metal like. I agree the lights are fantastic just the way you used them, and not showing the side with the wires in the window. I am so impressed! You are really good at this! I enjoyed this very much. Thank you, Sheila
Hi Rick, I have to admit, I wasn't sure if this video was for me, but it's Rickvanman so have to watch it, so glad I did, what a great result. The gun looks brilliant on the wall and I enjoyed watching the whole process of doing it. Great video mate, classic Rickvanman if you don't mind me saying. Love the music in the vid too by the way way. Nice one mate.
At 1:11 I couldn't help but think of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. "GET ON WITH IT!" Haha. Great tutorial. I think I'm going to try something like this too. You have inspired me, sir!
There's going to be a shortage of NERF Guns on eBay now, hahaha. A job well done Rick and I think you should do another, maybe a hand gun or a rocket launcher...maybe both to create your own arsenal.
nicely done job, i used to do this with kits years ago its quite good to get to the end and stand back, my friends didnt get it and i drifted away but who knows one day.....
That looks great! That lit clear bit at the back provides a great back light, looks like you're supposed to pick it up and start blasting aliens. Also I love the Mass Effect games so not biased towards this video or anything. lol!
Like this one! I download/print out decals & cover them with clear packaging tape same stuff used by the postage industry. Years ago i used to build model rockets with up to four D size engines; modified the space shuttle one complete with real frogs in the cargo bay and they came back safely with parachute. I've got a few light sabers i want to modify with road flares. Cool video.
I rather liked it turned with the breach visible. There must be some way to dampen to view of the wires? Anyway, good job with the painting. Now, on to paint your DJI Phantom 3
Nice project Rick. It took me back to when I was young and painted citadel miniatures. The technique with the wipe on and wipe off was similar to the inking that we used to do. The idea was paint on, ink in the crevices and shadows, and then dry brush the highlights. Finally varnishing with the clear matt as you did. What's next? Maybe recreate a Rhino or a Land Raider in actual size? ;-) All the best.
Always enjoy your videos Rick!, you don't need another one, just when your bored of this look change it completely and then you've got something different to look at for awhile ;-) also I saw old vids of your ibs, hope your keeping it at bay and I'm wanting to build a self build and a bathroom is the top of the list. I saw people's comments of wondering why you bothered petting the bathroom in but I totally get it, I've got Crohn's disease and a bathroom is a must for making my trips comfortable! Thanks alot
Thanks Steve, I like your thinking about just changing it when I get bored with it :-) Sorry to hear about the Crohn's disease, I totally empathise. I've found the van has been invaluable and often essential in making travel possible. Best decision I ever made. Feel free to pick my brains if you need to regarding your self build, I'll offer whatever experience based knowledge I can to help :-)
+rickvanman thanks for taking the time to reply!, and yes thanks il be sure to ask for any help I need with it, your van turned out great so I've got confidence in asking :-) take care mate!, there is one thing bugging me and that's the electrics!, it seams people don't want blame for yourself burning down your van, any link would be helpful! Thanks!
+Steve H Best place I found for help on the net was the SBMCC - the forums have loads of info :o) For electrics, especially for a first-time build, personally, I always reccomend a zig unit - its about as close to "plug-and-play" as you're likely to get, but it still requires some basic 12 volt knowledge to install it. This is about as simple as it will get (link below) - If you can get your head around it, you should be fine :o) thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/zig-wiring-diagrams-and-instructions.1074/
+rickvanman wow, will have to get my head around that thanks very much Rick, I always wonder when the wires are in the ceiling before there connected up the holes are cut and there hanging there ready do they all travel around the van to a certain place?, I noticed on your latest self build video that you done the electrics last, was that easier? I like the way you done all the insulation Windows lining etc before anything else, doing the electrics for me will be the bit that takes the time for me. Take care
Now THIS is classic RickVanMan content! I loved watching this video, I would also like to retract my comment regarding the weathering I left on your facebook post. Those pictures didn't show up the finer details that you could see in this video. It looks superb!
One way to get your red window be more opaque as you want is to lightly sand the inside of the plastic - this will diffuse the light and make more opaque.
Great interesting project Rick. I liked the way you did the wipe wipe off aging bit . At one stage I though you were going to put a blaster in it. Lazar lights spot on. Overall it looks a choice object of curiosity for your newly decorated Home.
Must admit I had my doubts but wow. Love you're videos Rick, it was you who got me away from stills and into video. Soon be time for a camping trip won't it?
Nice work Rick. I would have added a bit of edge damage to the white paint. the black looks like it's been in a war and white doesn't so much. If you have an airbrush, but you could spray darker whites or make a few scratch masks. rubbing the edges with course sandpaper helps too. But hey you've done a great job. the lights looks schweeet
+MZONE Thanks for the feedback, I was trying to figure out how to scuff the edges of the white, tried it with black paint but it just didn't look right. If I do another one, I'll be sure to take some of your tips on board :o)
+retrorestore Maybe because it is illegal in the UK unless at least 50% of it is bright red; bright orange; bright yellow; bright green; bright pink; bright purple; or bright blue.
Nice job--Now you have to go cosplay! BTW--Have you thought of covering that clear panel with opaque privacy film (i.e.--the covering used for street facing bathroom windows, etc)?
Great effort Rick! It looks similar to the gun called "no time to explain", if you've got that on Destiny? Recommendation: The Division (Tom Clancy) Beta will be out tomorrow for PS4. It's hinted at being the Destiny killer to which I think not... but eh... worth a try!
Worst thing I ever did was buy my boy a Nerf Machine gun. The thing was belt fed and fired off 3 to 4 rounds a second. I'd walk through the front door or get to the top of the stairs where the little fecker (now 6'4") would be laying prone waiting to shoot me. I jest of course. The little shit always made me giggle. Nice job though Rick
Very nice project , ever think about adding some kind of sound with it, just a thought. A very well done project and as usual the video and sound well done as well. thanks
Nicely done! The paint technique when you applied paint & then removed is called "ragging" usually done with professional paint rags - like old T-shirt fabric. You might like to try applying paint with crinkled up plastic grocery bags or brown craft paper bags - like lunch bags. I think you'd like the sort of 'camo' effect you could achieve. Applying paint with a sea sponge might give you an effect you might like too. When I previously mentioned that it would be great to see your "Rick-ness" added to your new LR decor, I wasn't expecting this! But, it is so you, right? And just so I don't worry about you - please be careful with your faux stove next to sheer drapes. By building code, those can combust in 3-7 seconds & set the house ablaze. Highly flammable fabric & would wick straight up the wall into interior wall construction like a chimney to the 2nd floor. It is a cozy touch to your transitional room design. : )
Very impressive mod, yeah once you do your first Nerf mod, you slowly start to accumulate Nerf blasters you know you don't really need. LOL I have a few I need to get rid of myself.
First off, amazing video and great results! you should be proud. one quick question to you or anyone here, how come you use a vinyl dye to cover your gun and then you decide to use a matte acrylic paint over the top? Ik you said it looked patchy and the acrylic matte spray helped fix that etc but if you were to do this again would you just use the matte black spray to prep it instead of the vinyl dye?
This is the first of your videos that I've watched, and I'm very impressed. Definetly subscribing 👍 Ps you can always use resistors to lower the current
Rick, any chance you could do a short video on the printed graphics part for me please as that looks interesting and may just help for a little project I have?
Wow, for someone who never played Mass Effect, you got that paint job dead on! Looks so good, I'm already prepping my Nerf Barricade for the same style paint job. Excellent work!
What grit are those foam sanding blocks? I have a similar project in mind and don't want to strip too much plastic (other than the raised Nerf logos of course).
Hi Rick...A great finished product.....well done!!!! The music is outstanding.....what is the track title and is it available to purchase? Thanks.......Nigel
+MuddyBootz Thanks Nigel. The track is called "Heartbeat Redemption" and is on soundcloud here: soundcloud.com/rick-clarke-5/heartbeat-redemption Not currently available for purchase, but I may release it on an album in the future :o)
Can you give some advice please rick, I've managed to take out all the screws apart from two long screws on the yellow part under the orange rail near the barrel of the gun if that makes sense, the screws seem way too tight and no screwdriver ive tried will work, plus the hole is too deep and thin for any screwdriver i have. i dont want to strip them either. Any ideas on how to get them out?
That turned out really good Rick :) It's a nice thing when you get a new interest. Some stick longer than others. I've been learning dutch for five years, have you had any thoughts on becoming bilingual or are you perhaps that already? :) If you pick Swedish I can help you out!
This is the coolest nerf mod I have ever seen, definitely. I just have one question though because I might try it myself: Does it still shoot? Please respond :) Thank You!
Hi rik , i love the vids , i watched for a long long time , u just keep me entertained .Hope its not a to intrusive question but do you work at all or have a trade ? Cheers mat from wolves
I dont mean to correct you on your own comment but it is actually the NERF N-Strike Stampede, as you said in your video... Otherwise sick paint job man!
that's brill. I'd run around and dive about making star wars gun noises. doooo do dooo dooo! Great stuff.
Looks fantastic Rick - especially the ageing on the black "metal" parts. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Paul. That lightsaber sounds great, I'll have to check out the picture:-)
Wow. I tried this, and it looks perfect! Just like mass effect!
amazing video, I've needed something like this to give me the confidence to do my nerf gun up too, Thanks for the brilliant video and great job on the gun, it looks brilliant!
Thumbs up for following through and finishing a project - not many people do!
Great job rick. I am new to your videos but so far i have found all your videos very interesting and the music fantastic.
Thanks David - glad you've liked them :o)

Nice. I shared this on Reddit and Twitter, will hopefully get the views it deserves. Good Job.
James.
+marblepictures Thanks James :o))
I never know what to expect when you upload a new video Rick. You manage to make everything interesting!

Fantastic video again. Thanks Rick

Top job Rick - it looks like an excellent cinema prop. You should take it along to Comic Con. Cheers Adam
Incredible job Rick, Thanks so much for sharing your hobbies with us. :)

One way to get your red window be more opaque as you want is to lightly sand the inside of the plastic - this will diffuse the light and make more opaque.
Well Done Rick. That turned out well. I think one is enough though:)
Thanks Sandy, yes I think one as a curiosity is fine. A wall full of them ~ not so great :-)
looking awesome. really great finished result. glad it worked for you 😊

+retrorestore Maybe because it is illegal in the UK unless at least 50% of it is bright red; bright orange; bright yellow; bright green; bright pink; bright purple; or bright blue.
+UK Infamous Yep gun paranoia is rampant here, hence the warnings at the start :o)

Excellent job, turned out well.
Nice job--Now you have to go cosplay! BTW--Have you thought of covering that clear panel with opaque privacy film (i.e.--the covering used for street facing bathroom windows, etc)?

gosh, geez that was good to watch and wow, the music was yours too. Brilliant Rick, and awesome lazer gun:) Thanks for sharing.

Hey man, How about you use some white paint on the inner side of the transparent window? It'll cover the wire inside but still keep the led visible.
Very nice project , ever think about adding some kind of sound with it, just a thought. A very well done project and as usual the video and sound well done as well. thanks
What a cracking job mate. you can come and go my van when it's ready. ;-)
Looks amazing BUT!!! You should do a black long magazine as well just to give it beef!
Nicely done! The paint technique when you applied paint & then removed is called "ragging" usually done with professional paint rags - like old T-shirt fabric. Want to keep you safe. : )
You, Sir - you are creating worlds.

Looks Great not really into Sci Fi but admire the work you have put into it ;)
The Music In the background,Is That Public Service Broadcast?
+Joloke08 Some of the voices are most likely from old stuff like that yes.
Very impressive mod, yeah once you do your first Nerf mod, you slowly start to accumulate Nerf blasters you know you don't really need. LOL I have a few I need to get rid of myself.
You paint good
You should totally do a lightsaber.
LOVE it!

wow love this video i have some old nerf guns never use them but this will be somthing nice on my wall
nice job i was thinking when you was sanding wouldnt a small amount of acetone on a bit of sponge rubbed over take the shine down easier?
The ultimate cat toy laser
Nice job Rick ;) looks waaaaaay better than original, by the way mass effect is a great game !
What grit are those foam sanding blocks?
I have a similar project in mind and don't want to strip too much plastic (other than the raised Nerf logos of course).
No don’t sand or paint moving components, the paint will flake off especially with how much the plunger tube actually moves

where did you get this equipment, like the terminal blocks, wires, LED's, lasers, battery holders, etc.
mostly eBay I think
ok thanks :)
Dude... you need to go play Mass Effect ASAP!
I would pay for that gun!
oh by the way nice background music
Futuristic
Nerf painting asmr
what tools did you use?
That turned out really good Rick :) It's a nice thing when you get a new interest. Some stick longer than others. I've been learning dutch for five years, have you had any thoughts on becoming bilingual or are you perhaps that already? :) If you pick Swedish I can help you out!
Tried learning Icelandic once, that lasted about a month before I had to give up due to my brain imploding every time I tried to speak it lol!
how much RS of stamped you have buy
hooman: what it that?
Petra(me): a laser rifle
hooman: GIVE IT!!!!!!
Petra(me): NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *shoots hoomans head off*
This is the coolest nerf mod I have ever seen, definitely. I just have one question though because I might try it myself: Does it still shoot? Please respond :) Thank You!
unfortunately, it is non-functioning :o(
rickvanman ok thx for telling me!
Sammy N. It doesn,t shoot because he took out vital components, of you just paint the outsides and assemble it back correctly it will function!
very nice
Oi Rick, do you have massive Nerf gun fights with your mates?
In the description, it says advertises Nerf guns (modded). Do you sell any? If you do, does anybody buy them?
no, this was a one-off :o)
well, looks cool!
Great Mod. What grit is your sanding sponge and what is the name of it?
I use 180 grit, it works fine! Don't know the name tho...
Hi rik , i love the vids , i watched for a long long time , u just keep me entertained .Hope its not a to intrusive question but do you work at all or have a trade ? Cheers mat from wolves
+Mat Lyons I work from home on multiple media and web based projects.
How to paint nerf guns star wars style

Do you have to take the gun apart??
Err, maybe watch the video, the answer is there :)
What type of music is this its 2016

Should have kept the internals man...... It's only a toy bro!
How old are you
What the type gun is this?
Nerf Longshot CS-6
I dont mean to correct you on your own comment but it is actually the NERF N-Strike Stampede, as you said in your video... Otherwise sick paint job man!
