How far did that axle nut take you before it came off? that's a nylock axle nut
@Partzilla I just want to point out that you're providing the wrong torque spec for the axle nut. According to the service manual, the Axle Nut Torque Spec is 83 ftlbs. Drive sprocket is 40 ftlbs and Driven Sprocket nuts are 47 ftlbs.

is it true some bikes need removal of swingarm to affix new chains?
You should be able to attach a new chain without removing swingarm. I can't think of a unit where you would need to remove the swingarm.
