- Buy a new chain and sprocket for your CBR600 along with a chain tool: bit.ly/CBR-chain-and-sprocket-...
Learn how to replace the chain and sprockets on your Honda CBR600. We’ll show you how to adjust a chain that still has some life in it, and then we’ll go a lot further. When your chain is stretched as far as it will go, it’s time to replace it. We’ll show you how to evaluate your chain and get it removed. When you replace your chain, it’s a good idea to replace the front and rear sprocket as well. It’s important that they wear together. Once we get the new sprockets installed, we’ll show you how to align the rear wheel and install the master link to close the new chain.

you guys at partzilla are lucky to have this guy around.. and thanks for paying for the video..
John is definitely awesome! Thanks for watching!
@@PartzillaParts Thanks too!
I already knew what to do, but the gear shifter...thats gonna be fun, i have the 600rr 2011 so i have more plastics to remove, you have now become my ChrisFix for bikes xD keep the bike videos coming pal.
John is such a natural teacher. really enjoy his videos.
You made this job look so easy! Thanks for the awesome video.
You made this look so easy but you should have mentioned undoing the front sprocket before cutting the chain. I followed your instructions except grinding couldn't get the link apart I had to resort to bolt cutters and had a hard time as the previous owner /mechanic used threadlock on the front sprocket.
Love the video but if you could instruct us novices about the problems that can arise so we don't get caught out that would be great.
Thanks.
John, you're very clear & thorough in your instructions & examples. Thanks bro!
You make everything look so easy John,
You inspired me to do it myself wish me luck.
Excellent step by step instructions. I'm doing this tomorrow with no fear.
Love the videos, I have a 2003 CBR 600RR and you've really helped me with maintaining it.
You are welcome.
Love these videos. I have the same model bike and these are very helpful.
After watching this video, I'm going to be saving a lot of money. Thank you
That's the goal, right? Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Really clear.
Great video..thanks for making these!!
Thanks Mr. Talley and Partzilla!
This was great. Very good instructions
2:30 you've got great videos and instruction, you explain well also. kudos sir
usually i make fun of people talking to an inanimate object being the dvr lol, but youres is actually quite godd haha
Thanks mate
Described perfectly for me to understand
Cheers

Useful footage! Kudos!
Really helpful, thanks for the upload 👍🏻
Great video! Followed along last night on my own bike and it worked great. Thanks!
Great! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for that. Very well presented and explained!
Than you for being my teacher.
one of the best installation video. thank you.
Thanks, Beomsu! Appreciate the kind words. Thanks for hanging out; hope to see you around the 'tube!
your videos are very educational keep em coming
Thanks, Robert! Glad you're finding what you need. Till next time, keep the rubber side down...
Thank you so much for this video
Great video 👍🏼
Nice video, and nice job atatching and swaging the chain.....you made it look easy.
Chains wear, they DO NOT STRETCH!
Thanks for watching, Richard!
Great video, not easy for everyone indeed!
Also can you explain how you found which links on the new chain to cut ?
Perfect Video , Thank you
Very nice man
But regardless..you make this look really easy. Thanks for the vid.
Great video
Hello there… thanks for all your videos… have one question, you know the reason The ABS light on in my CBR 1000rr 2008.. and how can I fix it??
Hi John could you please elaborate on how you torqued the front sprocket ? Did you use the back brake to lock the wheel? And is an impact socket safe for removing the countershaft nut?
Definitely taught me somethings I didn’t know.
Love this video "up she goes"
Sir do you need to put lube around the small front sprocket spline when you put a new one?
Good video. The bit I always find a pain is getting the front sprocket torqued without it rotating by itself.
I have a question about that rubber damper on the front drive sprocket. If I am installing an aftermarket 520 chain, should I order a new set of those dampers to put on the aftermarket sprocket?
Great video. Very useful 👌
Glad it was helpful!
I have a 2013 Honda cbr500r. Would these steps be the same one my bike? My old chain broke on me a week ago and have hesitation trying to do this by myself. I have all the tools and parts
If the chain guard did have to be replaced, would that require the use of a special (Honda) tool?
perfection
Thank you
Guys today when i was jumping on my bike i saw a plastic coming out of the swingarm. Then i realised that it is the drive chain guide ! Bike is brand new honda 2016 300cc rag, and i did 8.500 km on it yet. Is it normal to have that drivechain to be messed up ? Is it under warranty ?
Good evening I have a 2014 CBR 600rr. Could you place a link too those sprockets and chain?
So I have a broken key in my passenger seat I already replaced all the plastic with new ones do you have any videos that can help me get the key out?
Is there supposed to be a play on the front sprocket after torqueing the bolt?
Excellent vid, thanks. One question though... some vids say put the master link on at the rear sprocket and others recommend in the open? What gives? Ta
You can do either. Some find it easier to lay it on the sprocket for installation. Others prefer more space to work by leaving it in the open. It's just a matter of preference.
Are the torque settings same on 05 cbr rr
How do i get the exact measurements for my chain lol Im so new to this I dont want to put it on and its to short or my chain is t long? Someone please help me understand
Question I need help ! I have a new chain and sprocket for my 2019cbr600rr. Vortex
525SX3 Tri-Glide and when all set and adjusted it’s at the 5th mark is that right ?!? My swing arm sticker is farther back than that one in the video so I’m soooooo lost
How long does it take to replace the socket? Your video was 11minutes. Thank you. M. Lish 🙃
Thankyou sir
Do you always have to cut the new chains?
I see different types of front sprockets. Does they matter when the tooth count is 16(oem) ? I mean the center part of the sprocket is differen. There are flat ones and some have something like rubber on them. What I mean is some are bulkier than others.
What size was front spocket on impact
what size torque wrench? 1/2 or 3/4
Awesome video my friend, i totally enjoyed doing the full job on my blade saving a small fortune 💯👍🏻👍🏻😎
OEM chain ⛓️ doesn't require cutting ✂️ up?
is it 42 teeth what you said, is it not 41 teeth in back 16 in front and 112 link chain standard for 600rr 2007+
sir plz creat a video bajaj dominar 400 motorcycle rebild and anything u can do ...
anyone know what the front sprocket bolt/nut is? that is the only thing he didn't say the size of :)
When should I replace my chain guide
Did I miss the size of the front sprocket nut?
Hi I have my cbr mc22 250rr I like to put vfr swingarm to my bike I can or no if any one know about this please help me
Nicely done sir.
I only cringed a bit when you put the new chain in the vice, without putting a rag between the vice and new part.
OCD, don't scratch my new chain. ;)
PS
YOUR VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS HELPFUL.
THANKS
really good helped video, also I have a Honda CBR.
Glad you're enjoying the videos, Jigga! Cool that you have a CBR. We've been having a good time wrenching on this one.
How do you know how many links to cut? I worry that I'll cut too many! Any help will be appreciated! Love the videos though very helpful
The chain size is 112 links. Cut it down to 112 if your chain is larger.
Is it absolutely necessary to use a riveting tool to compress the plate and the masterlink together? I have seen people use a c clamp and then round some edges in the pin
As long as you can sufficiently expand the rivet ends, use whatever method works for you. The chain tool is the best and easiest option.
so front sprocket is always writting out?
On a cb500x 2019, you DON'T have to break the master link ( aka completely break apart your chain) if you're not replacing the chain and are trying to replace the rear sprocket. After loosening the axle bolt's nut on the right side and loosening the chain-tension locking nuts ( one on each side) that will enable you to slide the entire wheel forward enough to loose enough chain tension. Remove the axle bolt ( 11 ish inches long ), and you'll need to kind of faniggle with the rear brake assembly lifting it at a small angle as you're working on sliding towards you ( to the rear) the wheel as the while you're able to remove the chain from the rear wheel's sprocket little by little.
When you're ready to reinstall the rear wheel, as you're feeding/putting the chain on the sprocket, start from the top, otherwise you won't be able to get it on as their is an L shaped ( kinda) piece that is welded to the swingarm frame on the left side that gets in the way otherwise.
I just finished my project of going from front/rear of 15 tooth/41 tooth stock sprockets, to 16t/40t sprockets ( I wanted lower rpms at the 60+ mph range for slightly better mpg as mpg starts kind of tanking beyond the 4300 rpm range...., about halfway mark of rpm).
Remember these torque values, per honda themselves:
Rear sprocket nuts ...85 foot pounds of torque/pound feet of torque
Rear axle nut ( on the right side )...65
Chain adjusting lock nut ..one per side of the bike = 20 ( it's the 12mm nut...the 10mm is for moving that long adjusting screw it is hard-attached to that literally presses against the square metal faceplate that the 11 ish inch long axle/bolt goes through)
Hope this helped someone. I imagine most of this is similar for the 2013 through 2020 models with possibly some minor differences.
Contact honda power sports or google a service manual if you can to confirm the correct torque specs for your make and model bike
well that's obvious lol, have you never took off the rear wheel?
@@Fordahord1 ah.yeah..DUH...How the hell else do you think I swapped out the rear stock 41tooth sprocket for a lower tooth one? -_-
Anything else private obvious?
I feel like I should’ve loosened the front sprocket bolt first. Having a hard time getting it off without the chain and tire on.
incredible that metal chains actually stretch
Is a 32mm axle bolt standard for all cbrs? I have a 04 cbr600rr and I want to buy the proper socket for it but I see videos online that say 27 mm socket
It was 27mm on earlier models.
Will I be able to reuse the chain if I grind off the 2 holder pins, is there a way to keep the chain
I have a brand new chain and sprocket that I want to keep I just want to change is it out for different sprocket sizes and a stronger chain
Is this job really hard to do without an impact gun im just worried about the front socket mainly
I had to buy one. I could not remove with rear brake, 2nd person, or in neutral then in gear manually for at least an hour. Must’ve been loctite on previous job.
Impact wrench removed it in 5 seconds. Haha
Great tutorial! Did you spray the chain with wax?
No, this one is ready to go straight out of the packing.
Good video, I did this job last week on my own CBR954RR. Try to have a more steady hand the next time you grind the chain off, you hit the nut on the sprocket a little. :-) I saw you used original sprockets, so I guess it's an original chain too. why was the chain too long ? does honda delivers just 1 type of chain ?
One note, the chain-glider has a down side also. You didn't checked. My chain-glider was totally worn on the down side.
Because of a very loose chain and poor maintenance. It wears on the bottom when you decelerate.
And last a remark for all the bikers that saw this videos, the original front sprocket with the rubber plating on the sides is so important, the non OEM sprocket doesn't have those, and I red a lot of complains of chain-noise because of the missing rubber plating.
using power impact should only be used for removal right?
mikeyb byekim yes, because you need accurate torque specs
Very informative. Would it be much different on a 2001 gsxr750? Tired of paying for something I can do myself.
Same concept can be used on most sportbikes. They may have slight variations, but you can get it done.
Partzilla thank you for the reply. I just hope I don't need a special tool to take off the front sprocket. I think I can handle it.
You shouldn't. Just the right sized socket and a breaker bar for leverage.
What if your chain is a lot longer than you need How do I know how short to cut it?
What's the stock sprocket teeth for an 04 cbr600rr? Front and back teeth it seems like everyone has a different opinions on it. But I want to keep mine stock. They said it changes your speedometer if you change the teeth on them. Is this truth?
16/43 should be stock. If you alter the tooth count on either sprocket it will affect your speedometer.
I can't believe how easy all of this really is, I used to be scared of even taking off my rear tire... lmao
Some jobs are harder than others. Keep going!
is it necessary to cut that brand new chain? since you removed the front sprocket, can't you slide everything in without cutting chain?
Some chains come pre-ready for specific model bikes and don’t need cutting. Some chains do need to be cut. Make sure you use recommend manual link count and count old chain link and match to existing new chain, if manual agrees.
How do you know how much to tighten when installing the connecting link ?
Just mushroom the rivet to about the same size as the rest.
Very helpful videos!
Can you post one showing how to clean the carbs on the 2008 honda cbr600rr?
Thanks
The 2008 CBR600RR is fuel injected. It doesn't have a carburetor. You can put some fuel system cleaner in the tank and run it through the system.
Got it thank you!
Do I have to change only the rear sprocket? Or both front and rear?
You can change just the rear, just depends on wear. If the front sprocket is good, no need to change it.
bro i have a cbr250r 2011 version...suddenly from the last ni8 it gives continous jerks while riding bro!!! can u tell me the problem???
Start with the simple stuff, run some injector cleaner through it to make sure the injectors aren't clogged.
I have that exact same bike.. what chain size an sprockets do I need exactly?!

Did you lube the front sprocket? Great video
You can lube the spline, but no need to lube the sprocket.
2009 CBR600RR. I just replaced the drive sprocket with the 'supersprox 1370-16T' product.
I think it is a little thinner than genuine.
Even though the bolts are tightened, the sprockets do not come into close contact with the washers. Pull the sprocket by hand, it move with 1 ~ 2mm gap.
No problem? What action should I take?
If you can move the sprocket by hand, that is a problem. That sprocket should be a tight fit for an OEM replacement. Might want to double check your installation.
First, thanks for the kind answers.
Sprockets - Washers - Bolts There should not be a gap of 0.1mm between?
(I think it's common sense to do this)
Installation was done correctly according to the regulations. Sprocket - Washer - Bolt tightened correctly.
(However, there is a gap of 1 to 2 mm between the sprocket and the washer.)
To guess....So the problem is that 1370-16T is thinner than OEM.
(I discard the OEM sprockets when replacing...Because can not compare each other ... confusion and concern ...)
I have no experience installing that specific brand of sprocket, so I don't have first-hand knowledge. They advertise as an OEM replacement, so it should fit as such. 1 to 2mm of play seems like more than it should be on the shaft. .1mm is inconsequential. I've never had a motorcycle that had that much play on the front sprocket.
Good video. Thank you for your kind reply.
Hi I had a question about the rear axle. Mine seems to be seized on the wheel and swing arm. I can not knock it through even after pounding on it. Any ideas? I really don’t want to spend an arm and a leg taking it to a shop
The axle itself just won't slide out after you remove the nut? That's strange, should come out pretty easy. If it doesn't come out with a couple hits of a deadblow, I would take it somewhere. That's not normal.
Are you too scared to hit it hard enough? Maybe your pounding isn’t exactly pounding, though even pounding shouldn’t be necessary. Try relieving vertical pressure on the axel by having a friend lift the wheel while tapping on the axle. Otherwise, yes, take it to a shop.
Can I use a car floor jack to lift a 2007 cbr600rr? Where to place?
It's not recommended. It will likely tip over.
How do you know how many links to cut off the new chain?
If the bike requires, lets say 145 links and you can only buy a 150 (just an example), then you cut off the excess.
Man I wish you guys would have did the chain slider! I'm having all kinds of trouble!
What kind of trouble?
@@PartzillaParts Sorry I meant to say chain slider. I cannot figure out how to get the center bolt off of the chain slider because the frame is blocking the bolt. I tried looking for a while but still could find no answers. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Welp I screwed that up I took the chain off first any idea on how to get that front sprocket off oh tha swing arm is off to yea I know I screwed it up 😂😂😂😂 2007 gsxr 750
You can get it off with an impact gun.
Weird how he barely covered flaring the pins. That's a very important part of the process and you need to be careful.
What size is that front sprocket bolt with washer? I stripped mine.
Next time always screw the bolt by hand before using a tool to tighten. You will never strip any bolts that way.
@@Meyaleleth I stripped trying to take it off. It is near impossible to strip putting it on. You weren't helpful. I asked what size.
Buy an OEM new bolt snd measure it if you want to fix the thread on the frame. You should anyway buy a new one. By the way there is no way you can strip a bolt removing it.
@@Meyaleleth Wow it sounds like you've never had a bolt stuck before. Stop talking to me if you can't answer me question.
