- Kobe Bryant in 2010 was asked who was the hardest player he had to defend in the NBA. His Answer “Brandon Roy 365, 7 days a week. Roy has no weaknesses in his game.” The last part interesting, because it’s exactly how most would explain the player Brandon Roy was. When he was at his peak, he really didn’t have a specific weakness you could attack. He was 6’6, strong, crafty, a 4 year college player so came in mature, deadly midrange game, posted smaller guards, shot the 3 well and even better in clutch situations, and Brandon was a dog. His personality kinda reminds of Portland’s new superstar Damian Lillard, in that they both are for the most part soft spoken off the court, but had a chip on their shoulder and wanted to bury their opponents in the worst way on it. Watching Brandon Roy in his prime from 06-10, he always reminded me of Dwayne Wade, but a lot less flashy, maybe less talented, but made up for it with his want to compete against the best and not tag along as their side piece. Roy was on his way to being a perennial all star, all NBA team selection, and maybe even a league MVP and HALL OF FAME. With the right help, Brandon Roy dare I say may have even won a championship. Brandon Roy had degenerative knees since birth. The doctors told Kevin McHale that he wouldn't last 5 years in the NBA because of it. That's why he decided to draft Randy Foye ahead of him.
Of course the Blazers love their chronically injured players and happily took Roy.

Brandon Roy was like a stronger wing version of penny hardaway despite not the passer nor the deep pull up beyond 3pt range but B Roy was a stellar all around player and a match up problem especially in the midpost .He got unlucky with the busted up knee.

This guy was a perfect basketball player. You watched him play and you learned something new at every play. Always good decisions, made the team better around him.
He was like the perfect swingman that started at the 2spot with the built frame of Small forward with his 3level scoring ability he could easily play at the 3spot with his versatility in a small ball lineup.

Seeing Danny Granger and Brandon Roy in the same photo really shows how much has happened since their careers have fallen off. It’s sort of sad.
As a hoops fan, one of the biggest things I always hate having to witness is seeing elite level talents being taken down by injury. The T-Macs, the Penny Hardaways, the Grant Hills, or you can even mention Roy’s former teammate Greg Oden who had all of the intangibles to become one of the next great big men, but simply never had the opportunity to live out a healthy career. But, Brandon Roy was special, man. I keep telling people that dude is hands down one of my favorite players of all-time. He simply had it all, every single weapon you would want in a two guard and more. He even had that dawg mentality to him, never backing down from any challenge, and rose to many occasions in clutch situations to let people know he was about that. When I’m reminded of the name, he’s one of those I genuinely get sad about. I don’t like those questions of “What could’ve been?” But, nothing but respect to B. Roy. An absolute pleasure to watch during his best years in that Portland Trailblazers uniform🙏
Thus is why I have no problem with load management. Mayne of these guys would've maybe been able to extend their primes by 3-5 years with proper rest and recovery for their specific needs.
@@J-Hue That’s a whole other topic in itself. But, load management is fine as long as the system isn’t abused. Which, is why there’s so much controversy revolving around it right now. Yet, in most cases, injuries like that are inevitable no matter how good you take care of your body. I’m someone who has suffered that very thing and I haven’t athletically been the same since. But, yeah, you hate it regardless of the circumstance

You probably wouldn't have a Dame drafted in Portland if there was BRoy as they would always be in the playoffs. Instead he would get all the help he will need by trading aging vets. But I wouldn't know who to trade for a top 10 pick with their roster.

B-Roy was one of my favorite players during his Portland days. I use to use him a lot in NBA 2K, it was sad to see his career end on such a low note due to injuries.

Idk if he surpassed Wade. 2009 was largely just the only season Wade was able to start and end the season healthy so he got to show the player he really was.
I think Olympic play hurt his career along with Melo's later on and now Middleton's going through it largely due to his running the Olympics. Not getting full off-season to recover after playing 82 games or more and then getting right back to it is rough on the body.
@@J-Hue you bring up a good point about Wade but actually Wade had his MVP-like season the year right after the Olympics so I think they were good for him because the year before (07-08) he was hampered with injuries. But I do agree Olympic play usually works to the detriment of players
He trained under Tim Grover that’s why. Dude was out for blood in 2009. I personally think he should’ve won it. But Lebron had the best record in the NBA, putting up video game numbers and Kobe being the best closer in the game and the last man standing in the Finals so Wade didn’t really have a shot smh

One of my favorite players ever. B-Roy was the definition of a bucket and three-level scorer and could cook like no other, but he's also the definition of a "What If" story as had he never suffered from major knee injuries he could've been the greatest Blazer of all-time and a champion for sure. Didn't even notice the similarities to Dame until you said it.

I remember that whole Portland roster from that era not only that but Kawhi Leonard has the same degenerative knee condition that caused Roy to retire early so you can tell time is ticking for him especially with all of the load management

Remember watching him when he was in high school. Same smooth, controlled, versatile game he always had. UW he blossomed into a real star and then put it all together in the NBA. Would’ve been one of the dominant guards of the NBA if he didn’t get hurt.

At the time Roy was blossoming, I thought to self he’s the closest thing to Michael Jordan since his retirement and that’s simply because MJ and Roy had no fat to their game. They were so fundamentally sound…clean. They didnt need a fancy Kyrie dribble for separation. They could both pull up and shoot over you with explosiveness. They played at their speed. And yes, Jordan was flashy but, only when necessary and to thrill the crowd. He and Roy didn’t depend on it. Tim Duncan same but, he wasn’t explosive. Roy and MJ were explosive and under control and clean. Rare combo.

I definitely remember how good B-Roy was. He wasn't as explosive a scorer or as quick as Dame but IMO, he game was more well rounded. When he was at his peak, only Kobe and D-Wade were better at the 2-guard spot.
