  • Her reign was supreme, and she captured the imagination of people the world over. They knew her by La Doña. They knew her by Maria Bonita. Her real name was Maria Felix, and she was one of the most successful and beautiful actresses in Latin American. She shunned Hollywood’s seductions and remained true to her roots, but her script was a drama including tragic loss, kidnappings, bitter rivalries-and murder.

When a good relationship ends badly there are those who would rather remember the joys and the warmth they once shared. Maria Felix was NOT one of those people.

RÓMULO GALLEGOS (born 2 August 1884 Caracas- died 5 April 1969 Caracas) was a Venezuelan novelist and politician. He began his work as a schoolteacher, writer, classical music enthusiast, and journalist in 1903. His novel Doña Bárbara was first published in 1929, and it was because of the book's criticisms of the regime of longtime dictator Juan Vicente Gómez that he was forced to flee the country. He took refuge in Spain, where he continued to write: his acclaimed novels Cantaclaro (1934) and Canaima (1935) date from this period. He returned to Venezuela in 1936 and was appointed Minister of Public Education.

Gorgeous and talented. When she would come to Hollywood/Los Angeles, she would sometimes dine in the Biltmore Hotel, downtown Los Angeles. My dad was a waiter there and she would always ask that he be her waiter for the night. Same goes for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the Rat Pack and quite a few other celebrities of the time.

@@kristinepauwels4086 He was that indeed. He was a quick and hard worker with a charming personality. When I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. We were living in La Puente, California in the 2 or 3 blocks that comprised the "Mexican neighborhood" in the middle of what was still mostly a white semi-rural area. I once picked up the phone and a very distinctive voice asked for my dad. Years later when I was in my early 20's I asked my dad about that call. He said it was Bing Crosby. I went like 'Oh YEAH!".... LOL.
