You ate a high quality durian, the taste is one of the best you could get. Congrats on getting them.
I feel honoured!
Durian is the king of fruits here in S.E.A
My heart dropped when you dumped that box of durian!
Tragic I know!
That box of durian you bought is called Mao San Wang meaning Cat Mountain King. It's one of the more expensive variety of durian. Hence the price. There are many varieties with names like Red Prawn, Golden Phoenix, Black Gold etc. All these durians are from Malaysia, so if you're going to Malaysia eat your fill there as it is much cheaper compared to prices in Singapore. Buy the unopened ones as they're fresher and the price is based on how much per kilo. Be friendly to the seller and ask him to choose a good one for you.
Great tips thank you!
Singapore is awesome. Greetings from Germany.
You've bought the "mao shan wang" durian (or Musang King as it is called in Malaysia) which is a premium cultivar, $35 is pretty normal.
Oh wow!
Welcome to Singapore. Thank you so much for enjoying a wonderful time here in Singapore and inviting the whole to see you having a splendid time here.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for visiting Singapore. I loved your vlog. Thanks for the positive review of our country.
My absolute pleasure, thanks for watching
Those durians you bought looked top notch!!!! Congrats!!!!!
Tastes better if cold!!!!
You got that right!
Very brave trying the durians, Dude. I definitely can finish the whole box in a day. Durian lovers like me can eat it four times a week before we fall sick. To us, it is the undisputed King Of Fruits.
Agreed absolutely Diderot! I love Durians.
Thanks man! I can see how they can become addictive after a while
I couldn’t stop laughing at the durian tasting 🤣🤣🤣
What a rollercoaster of emotions hahah
It is good that you personally give it a try despite many negative comments about durians.
The smell can be easily overcome if u imagine eating this wonderful, creamy and custardy dessert that requires no baking.
All natural, delicious n nutritious too, but of course if you chose the best ie the Mao Shan Wang durian from Pahang MY
Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised by it
@@Ashleysplanet
A good entry lvl for durain is the ice cream from four seasons durain. Abit overpriced imo but it will be something more familiar than the actual mushy fruit.
My cats love durian . They will follow me carrying the durians into the kitchen and meowing and waited till they get one seed each.
Durian is something that you will love it , or hate it even with our local people too.
Hahah cool, have you noticed they like the high-grade stuff more?
Thanks for making my day ...Lolzzz😂
Thank you for watching!
Some durian stalls would give you some discount especially if it is end of the day. But likely for foreigners they may not discount that much. You bought premium durians, the price is around there.
Interesting!
$35 is about there.. I remember a whole durian could be $50 and above... this is the good stuff... and it is fresh, that is the best part. A lot people try out frozen durian that might have been kept too long and possibly turning bad and decide they dun like it. But your first taste going for the top end stuff... which is freshly taken from the fruit is the best way to enjoy it.
I'm really glad I ended up with the top-grade stuff! What a happy coincidence
Durian is a strange fruit. You either like it or hate it. There is no in between.
I agree! Wild taste, smell and texture
U were trying so hard to enjoy the durian.
Was hilarious to watch yr facial expression. well done.
The first place you had passed by was the Tekka Market & Food Centre which was still under upgrading renovation last month. However, it is open now. Tourists are welcome to try cheap affordable indian food there. 😊
Would recommend first timers to try durian, eat it taste it without smelling it... Usually it's the smell that affects people trying... Mao Shan Wang has a rich creamy texture and taste bittersweet... If you pinch your nose & try, you might like the taste... That's how I heard some durian lovers start to love durians. 😉
Singaporeans are friendly, simply approach the hawkers, venders even anyone you see to inquire anything that you need help on. 😊
That's the best durian to have in Singapore.
I feel privileged!
You need to eat freshly opened durian with people ;) my dog loves it a lot!!
Oh cool, maybe ill try giving it to my dog too
The pack of durian is good enough for 4 people. You bought the top grade durian. 😊
It was great! But yes, I definitely got too much
I'm so curious about what durian tastes like!! You've inspired me to seek some out👀
Do ittttttt!
Creamy sweet n strong sweet smells
@jenniferloverofsheep - - - after you have decided to give it a try, at the durian stall, ask the durian stall owner for the Mao Shan Wang variety which is one of the best variety though it’s a little costly, or next is the D24 variety which is slightly cheaper but also a premier variety. It would taste even better if you can bring them home, put them in the refrigerator until you are ready to eat them. Who knows, you may love it so much and ended up getting addicted to it. By then, please do not blame me for that. Good luck😀😬😁😄😛
Durian is as acquired taste as cheese, especially the likes of blue cheese. The difference is durian is best when eaten fresh but cheese is preferred when eaten rotten
before you jump right into it, know that there are different types of durians and they all have different flavour profile. it's not a good idea to just buy a random durian and try. especially if it's your first time. you want that experience to best fit your taste buds. Best if you are able to purchase a durian from fruit stall owner that knows durian so they are able to tell you the difference between the various types.
Tekka Hawker Centre is closed for renovation. There are many eatery places along Serangoon Road.
Good to know!
Hey pal! Well done, slow and steady you love it more and more. Many expats love it once they get used to it. Well done! For ,$35 you get a high end grade, if you buy a 10 one, you'll regret the taste. This one is a success. Congratulations ❤
Oh wow, I feel lucky to have experienced the high end durian! Thanks dude 🙏🏽
@@Ashleysplanet come back Singapore again when you can.cheers!
You the entire box of durian away!!! OMG!!! LOL
Tragic I know haha
No you did not get scammed. You had one of the top notch breed of the durian. It’s around that price
I feel honoured
Seems like you went Little India on the weekends. There is a large population of foreign labourers in Singapore from India/bangladesh/west asia.... hence during the weekends, it will be very crowded because it is their day off.
Oh cool!
22:11 A little misconception on your side about the rules on bringing durians on board the MRT trains. If you are caught with durians on board the train, you can be asked to leave the train by the MRT staff, but you will not be fined as it is not an offence to so, just not allowed to. That is why you can see signs in the train stations and in the trains that says " No Smoking - fine $XXX. No Littering - fine $1,000.. . . etc and No Durians - but there's no fine amount indicated.
Ohhhh very interesting! Thank you for watching
$10 per kg MSW when durian season. Now is about twice the price.
Interesting!
Try the bitter durian. Usually its copperish / golden colour. It tastes better. The bitter taste even out the hi/low taste.
I'll keep an eye out!
The Sultan Mosque is the oldest mosque here in Singapore
Oh thats cool!
❤👍
🙌
I'm eating durians while watching this video. HAHA. I hope you liked it.
haha cool! I enjoyed it too
Those that you spoke to on the street were mostly foreigners from neighbouring SE Asia or Asia because majority of Singaporeans speak English.
Interesting!
Your durian is TOP quality durian! $35 is worth it. Your "WOAH" is so Singaporean 🤣 Welcome to the family😀
It tasted great! Thank you!
$35 for that? A bit high. But still fine for Mao Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King) one of the highest rating/grade durian.
I agree!
@@Ashleysplanet That box of Mao Shan Wang durian looks absolutely delicious to me ... hmm ...
Nope, u did not get scammed. That’s about the price of durians nowadays. Yours looked premium!
I had no idea of the prices before coming here, it definitely shocked me
I didnt like durian when having it up straight....but then i tried fried one with some batter outside and that tasted really good.... i really want to visit south asia just for that.....
For anyone curious about fried durian..... it tasted like custard with slight onion flavour with hints of sweetness... also texture was like whipped cream...
Oh wow, fried durian sounds amazing!
🙋🇸🇬
👋🏽🇸🇬
Oops! I feel your loss… The durian you bought looked top grade: thick , creamy, sweet and fragrant…will taste better if eaten cold…. Like creamy ice cream.
It was pretty good! I also tried durian ice cream too, it was delicious! Have you tried it?
Yes theres too of you here in Singapore cos we dont have our own identity
The more u eat the better n tastier 😂😅
I can imagine!
If u like non spicy. Should try our local Chinese food. 😋😂
I’ll give it a go! And dish recommendations?
Chicken rice, claypot rice, hokkien mee, hor fun, chee cheong fun, yong tau foo, fish ball noodles....? And some traditional chinese sweet desserts or soup. There are lots of Chinese/peranakan snacks Peranakan or Nonya is a mix of Chinese and Malay cuisine. Actually Indian food aren't spicy.@@Ashleysplanet
i skip travelling on a sunday, just cause the populace triples in a day🤣
Durian is the King of fruits to us Southeat asians. And you just ate one of best grade of durian and that's why you paid $35. The are many grades of durian and the prices vary accordingly.
Wow, I didn't realise how special it was
you've bought the higher grade durian, from Malaysia : 猫山王 ...
literal = cat mountain king ...
sweeter and creamy ...
there are other malaysian types ...
not as sweet ... a little bitter and
the sugars are fermented...
litttle alcoholic in taste ...
most of us like the latter :-)
Oh interesting! Thank you
OMG you just threw away one of the highest grade durian? Lol
This mistake haunts me
@@Ashleysplanet Lol
@@Ashleysplanetshould hv just pass to any Chinese Singaporeans. Most of us love it. 😂
😢 you dumped the durian🥺
Im sorry hahaha
@@Ashleysplanet do you know I didnt buy any for a few years due to its cost.. sigh...
There are so many cheaper versions of durian. $8 per box. But low quality.
Well I’m glad I got to try the top tier stuff!
Nooooooooo you did not just THREW THAT GOLD NUGGETS?! LOL!!!! Those are quality durians! If you ask the locals I am pretty sure they will be happy to eat them LOL if you change your title to - I tried durian for the first time/I threw a box of premium mao shan wang durian. I'm sure you will have much more traffic and perhaps hate comments😂😂😂
Hahaha, thats a good idea. I did offer it to several passers-by but nobody wanted it :(
You know you bought a Mao Shan Wang and that’s like the premium of premium durians right?! There are so many types and variations, each one tasting more repulsive than the next 😂 but kudos to you for losing your durian virginity in Singapore, my homeland! I’m heading back in October and you’ve just inspired me to get some 🎉
I wish I would have known at the time! Thanks for watching!
You need to get a better camera with motion stabilisation, or better software! Would enhance the viewing experience a lot
I agree, I have a gimbal but never use it
Durian has different quality different grad different price. 😅
Unfortunately this was the only one left at the market
There are many grades of durian. For 35, u probably had gotten yourself a better one.
Maybe I should try the worst grade next time
Taste, texture, and smell go together. If you're turned off by the smell, you're never ever going to like it! Anyway, I'm super glad most westerners are turned off by durians! Imagine how high the price of durians will get with the additional demand from these countries?
I disagree, the smell was horrific to me. Although I was pleasantly surprised by the taste! But yes, the more for you I guess!
😂
Get it off your chest, you have NOT been scammed. Current price Top Grade MAO Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King) durian at $20 plus per kilo (including skin). Congratulations, You have just inducted yourself into the Durian Eaters Hall of Fame. When in Malaysia, ask for the price per kilo, you be amazed, it's not that cheaper either. Ask for Red Prawn, it is much sweeter. Other than that, Malaysia is a much cheaper country to visit, with roughly the same food.
That’s really interesting, thank you!
I love durians but my family forbids it. They believe it is too heaty.
Oh damn!
Durian is one of the few rare naturally occurring foods that has both fats and sugar.
Oh wow!
This place are call as little India. That is why so many Indians. Those Indian most are foreigners, they working here. The food u eat there are also India food 🍲 spicy. 😅😰
I loved little India!
Oh, how could you throw away a whole box of durian like that! It's a great waste. And it had cost you so much.
It was very unfortunate! I offered it to a few people but nobody wanted it. I figured it was better than littering
Actually for first timers and foreigners, i'd suggest red prawn durian. They tend to be sweeter. Some durian can be bitter.
One BIG DISCLAIMER. If your pack of durian has water at the base, or in the shell itself, its turned bad... It will stink like socks and no asian would eat that.
Very interesting, thank you for the useful info
durian sellers are like hawkers, u need to bargain...get it down 28 or something
Good to know!
@@AshleysplanetNot all of them will do bargaining.
*35 BUCKS* for Durian *?!* 😮😢
I won't pay any Durian box for more than $18 *!*
I was very shocked too!
Price is normal for premium durian
I like it when ang mohs don't know how to pronounce quay.
Yes it should be mushy, custardy. You chose the better looking out out of those 3.
I would take it if it hadn't gone bad.... What a waste to see it get binned.😢
Hahah its a tough one to pronounce + I wish I could of gave you the rest, too much for me to eat
@@Ashleysplanet
It's smthg i would probably whip out if some random ang moh want to talk shit about singlish. 😜
Durian
Did you get scammed?
Nope. That is the high grade (if not the highest ) durian you got there going at $20 - $30 a kg😅
I didn’t expect it to be that much! But I enjoyed the high grade durian 🔥
I also introduce top grade such as MSW to 1st timer to win them over more easier
Nooooooooooooooo you threw the durian away. What a travesty.
Heartbreaking I know!
why throw away $35 box of Durian, why sia...
if you have more time in SG, Geylang Loyang
it will be great place to have durian, durian lover will be there
and see how other eat durian, it will be extra experience
can simply walk toward bugis + junction
you miss out Motor Ice Cream less then $2
Thanks for the tip!
This is just a general thought and is not specific to you.
I agree that the odour of durian is extremely strong. However, I never understand why people from the west find the odour repulsive. I sense no similarly to rotten food, onion and other common descriptions by people from the west. It is just a strong fruity fragance.
Also, why is creamy texture disgusting? Doesn't westerners eat a lot more cream than asian?
I understand each has his food preferences. But I cannot understand why is durian considered repulsive.
Just psychological?
I don't mean any animosity neither am I offended. I am just really baffled.
The smell to me was very off-putting, but the taste wasn't too bad. Maybe the collective rumours have something to do with the first impressions, im not really sure. Just one man's opinion 🤷♂
U're shaking the camera too much
....not steady...calm down n walk slowly
I get too excited 🤷♂️
Hi Ashley.... you should not buy the whole box of durian if you just want to taste it for the very first time. You actually can ask the durian guy if you can buy just one piece (one seed) I am sure he will not mind for the tourist . That durian Mao Sang is very expensive breed .
Too bad you have to discard the whole box. It's so wasteful .
I should of done that, you're right! I could not eat it all unfortunately
U just committed the ultimate crime in Singapore, throwing away good expensive durians!! Why don't you offer it to the locals?
I did, multiple times!
Do not waste our malaysian durian ya. Many poor people cannot afford it.
Stupiak malusian!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
eating durian is like eating rotten rubbish from a can
I disagree!
@@Ashleysplanet Surely. The old Roman saying is always true: De gustibus non disputantum est.
Could have bargained a bit for the bracelet n neckless 😊
I agree
